No. 1 "Llewellyn Fawr" : Mamod 0-4-0
The oldest locomotive on the line, No. 1 served in the quarries before being converted for use on the mainline with the addition of a tender for greater fuel and water capacity. When the preservationists took over the line No. 1 was in a bad way, suffering from years of running with little or no maintenance, and leaking steam from every pipe, valve and cylinder. Withdrawn from use almost immediately, it now stands in the company workshops awaiting completion of a long running restoration project.

No. 2 "Tempest" : Mamod 0-4-0
Another locomotive to see service in the quarries, this engine is how No. 1 would have originally appeared apart from the livery (No. 1 wore a blue livery for the early part of its life.) Slightly rebuilt, with improved steam raising properties, No. 2 is still not powerful enough to tackle the deviation without a good run up and a light train. As a result it spends most of its time in the quarries, only venturing onto the main line to haul the occasional slate or maintenance train.

No. 3 "The Duchess" : IP Engineering 'Jane' class 0-4-0
The most recent of the quarry locomotives and closely resembling the earlier Mamod built engines. This loco is painted in the crimson lake livery as it is intended to haul some lighter passenger trains, should proving tests on the main line be successful.

No. 4 "Christine" : Pearse 'Auric' class 0-4-0
The workhorse and flagship of the line. This loco was purchased by the preservation society to haul both passenger and goods trains and was the first steam engine to run in public service on the preserved line. By far the largest locomotive on the railway "Christine" is easily able to handle any train but required the Mynydd Nellu tunnels to be enlarged, to give safe clearance!

Alice and Joan
These small industrial locomotives were saved from a nearby peat cutters line upon its closure and put to work in the quarries. Whilst not as powerful as the steam engines they have the advantage of being ready for work at any time.
Alice is a Ruston And Hornsby 0-4-0 and Joan is a bow framed Simplex.

No. 5 "Richard"
This loco is a larger, more powerful, Ruston with a large cab fitted by the C.L.R. for improved driver comfort. Richard can usually be found hauling maintenance trains or lighter passenger and goods trains.

No. 6 "Mary"
Another Ruston And Hornsby 0-4-0 , as Alice but with a cab. Built from spare parts, Mary has proved to be very reliable although drivers have complained of a rough ride over points and the fact that She will not be hurried at all!

Edgar
Edgar is a Bo-Bo railcar with a body constructed from the remains of an American coach. For a while Edgar was the only locomotive in service on the line and pulled maintenance trains during the early preservation years. Now out of service there are plans to transfer the name to a large 0-4-0 diesel currently in production in the company workshops.

The Chequer Light Railway currently has eight bogie coaches and three four wheeled coaches on its books, although only about half this number is available for service at any given time. Liveries include Midland Red for the four wheelers and chocolate and cream, green and white, or periwinkle blue and white for the bogie coaches.
The goods stock consists of a number of four wheeled open wagons plus a bogie open wagon. Three guard's vans provide space for any goods which cannot be exposed to the elements. There are also a large number of small four wheel wagons, mostly slate wagons but including coal wagons and tipper wagons also.
