The Oncidium Section Rhinocerotes
Another Section established by Garay and Stacy in their 1974 review, 2 this contains plants distinguished by conspicuous pseudobulbs, enclosed by non leaf bearing thin membranaceous
sheaths. The sepals and petals of the flowers are spreading, the lateral sepals always joined. The column is smooth,
shaped like a bow, cylindrical, without auricles. The rostellum is short. The disc of the lip has a single long,
upward curving, terete horn.2 This gives the Section (and one species) their names
and makes them unusual and interesting.
The three listed species are longicornu, macronyx and rhinoceros.2
Oncidium rhinoceros
Onc. longicurnu produces small flowers with greenish or red brown
sepals, the laterals joined nearly to their apex. The petals are rusty blotched, the lip yellow blotched red. Pseudobuibs
are 50 to 75 mm 1high, bearing two leaves. This is native of Brazil and is indicated to be cool growing. 1
Onc. rhinoceros is a small compact plant which produces an attractive display of interesting flowers.
