FAQ's Page
We understand how confusing
the whole process of web design and domain name registration can be. That's why we have
included this faq's page. We have provided the answers to some of the frequently asked
questions that you may have. If you have any further questions, or you feel you need to
inquire further please don't hesitate to contact
us.
What
is a domain name?
Domain Names are the
names used to conveniently contact an Internet site or e-mail address. (e.g.
gsmweb.co.uk). Without Domain Names, contacting an Internet site would require knowing the
Internet Protocol (IP) Address; (e.g. 158.43.121.23) of that site. Behind the scenes, a
worldwide system called Domain Name Service (DNS) translates the easy-to-remember Domain
Names into the less friendly IP addresses required to connect to a site.
If your organisation's name is Company Ltd, you could register the Domain
Name company.co.uk and your e-mail address could be someone@company.co.uk.
Similarly, a Domain Name can be used to provide a customised web address (URL) for your
company web site, for example; www.companyname.co.uk.

How
do I choose a domain name?
The characters you can choose from:
- a b c d e f g h i j k l
m n o p q r s t u v w x y z
- 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0
- Hyphen (-)
An address must
begin and end with an alphanumeric character. Punctuation characters must not be placed
together.
Please Note: - Domain Names are NOT case sensitive. Global Domain Names (.com .net .org ) MUST
be less then 26 characters, (this includes the 4 characters ".com".) Domain
Names can contain letters, numbers or hyphens (-) NO spaces or other characters are
allowed.
The acronym MAIL is a good way to
help you choose a Domain Name:
Memorable - How memorable will your Domain Name be to your customers and
clients, how relative is it to your organisation's name and services you offer?
Aesthetics - How does the name look, how will it look on business cards and
company literature?
Impressions - We all know that first impressions can be crucial so choose your
Domain Name carefully.
Length - In general when picking a name, less is more, in other words a
short name is preferable to a long one.

Can
I choose anything as a domain name?
Yes and no! Theoretically you can register anything; in practice
there are restrictions. For example, if the name that you have chosen is already
registered (rather like company names, they cannot be duplicated). You cannot register
names already registered as copyright i.e; McDonalds. You cannot use words likely to cause
offence, or that are abusive. Words of less than three characters are normally refused
registration.

Is the
domain name that I want still available?
Simply click here and type into the search box the name that you
would like to secure and in seconds you will see if it's still available. Try as many
combinations as you wish; there is no obligation to register.

Can anyone
register a domain name after my registration?
NO! Accredited
registrars through a universal registry database verify Domain Name availability. This
system prevents a Domain Name that is successfully registered from being registered again
through another Domain Name registration site.

Is it
only big companies and businesses that can have a domain name?
No, and it's
becoming increasingly popular to do so. Many people register their own name in order to
set up an e-mail address and web address for themselves and family members.

need a website, but don't have time or the know-how to build it?

What
is an ISP and do I need one?
An ISP is an
(Internet Service Provider), and yes, you will need one. The role of your ISP is to house
your website. The ISP will provide you with an amount of web space for your site. This is
usually around 20 - 50 megabytes of space; more than enough for a small company or family
website.
