Robocop II

Spot the parts that were in the film...

Comments:

Similar to the original Robocop arcade game except this time you can move up and down as well as left and right (like in Final Fight). The sprites are very large and well animated and the game features several sound clips from the film. There are different modes thrown into the usual scroll-and-shoot like sight-move-and-shoot and button bashing sections but they don't really improve the game they just make the levels seem longer than they really are. This said, there are two good bonus rounds that involve Robocop shooting out coloured trucks and helicopters while in pursuit of a felon and some nice cut scenes which improve the game some what. One problem is that the game doesn't really stick that closely to the film's plot. Do you remember Robocop shooting a bad guy into a vat of toxic waste in the second film? And how about Robocop storming OCP's robot factory only to be met by an army of androids? No, I don't recall those bits either.  All in all the game is good for a quick go but it's too short on challenge and length to make it that much fun.

Comments: Basically the same as the first game but this time Robocop looks like a short fat tin can on legs. The most noticeable difference is Robocop's alarming lack of grip on any surfaces leading to an extremely annoying sliding effect. The game itself has you walking from left to right collecting as many test tubes of the drug nuke as you can while 'arresting' (to you and me that means shooting) any baddies that walk by. Not bad.

Comments: Same as the NES version but with nasty, blocky graphics.
Unfortunately the 'drift' effect is still also present.

Format: Amstrad GX4000

From: Ocean

Year: 1990

Comments: Made for the Amstrad console GX4000. A different version to the others. This is a platform action game. Robocop must collect the test tubes and rescue captives. This is pretty difficult to play and there are loads of traps and nasty pits to fall down. Good graphics though.

Comments: Similar to the NES version. The first level is a platform shooter but beware if you don't arrest (kill) more than 50% of the bad guys you'll have to do the level again until you do. After that you fight ED-209 and then try to unravel your memories in the style of a slidey picture puzzle.
