The Running Man

From: Grandslam
Year: 1989
Format: Spectrum 48K

Various screens from the game. (from left) the animated intro, Ben Vs the Stalkers and
that weird puzzle
Comments:
As Arnie you must run across the zones avoiding obstacles like bottomless pits and angry dogs on your way to the stalker. When you find him you must beat him and then go on to the next zone. Inbetween the levels is a strange and rather difficult timed puzzle based on the lock system. This game takes forever to load. First you load the animated intro. After that the title screen and then each of the levels. The graphics are okay but there is very little sound and no in game music. The levels are very short and the fights quite difficult due to the limited attacks you can use. It's good but not great but it does play very much like the film.
Other versions of The Running Man:
Format: Commodore 64
From: Grandslam
Year: 1989
Comments: Same as the Spectrum version with better graphics and an annoying tune that runs all the way through the game.
Format: Amstrad CPC
From: Grandslam
Year: 1989
Comments: Same as the other two versions but it is virtually unplayable thanks to the unresponsive controls and the main character insisting on bouncing back every time he touches an obstacle and starting to run after jumping. The latter makes it almost impossible to get across platforms. The graphics are blocky, slow moving and jerky and the gaudy, loud colours will make you go blind if you look directly at them. There is only one sound effect and you'll have to reach the stalker to hear it. Definitely the worst version.
