Tegraine stared at the human encased in the ice block. So
perfect, he thought. Yet so small and fragile. He waited, as
he had waited many times before, for her answer.

"No! I could never remain with you, Tegraine, for you did not
ask!"

Tegraine's expression hardened as he heard the too-familiar
words. "But I ask you now!" he stormed. "I ask you as I
have asked you, have begged you, every day for more than
a year! Do you want the truth? Would it pain you to know
that I did not NEED to ask, for your precious 'father'
bartered your life with no more thought than had you been a
slave in his kitchens?"

she hissed. "You think that I would take the word of an ice
giant? One who knows more of deceit and the bartering of
lives than any mere 'human' could aspire to? I despise you,
Tegraine, and I would stay trapped here a thousand years
before I would marry you!"

With a snarl, Tegraine clutched his frost amulet, returning
the princess to her timeless slumber. Then he sat down at
the table, and buried his head in his hands.
