She sat at the table in the restaurant, looking into those calm
eyes. "I knew when I first saw you that you would be special,
that you would let me be myself without interrupting me to
make stupid suggestions."
She looked and wondered what thoughts could be hidden
behind those eyes. She looked down and contemplated the
meal before her, silent only for a few moments.
"You know, sometimes people make me angry. They can
be soooo blind. . . .but not you. You seem to see everything.
Maybe that's why I am here with you tonight." With a toss of
her long hair she looked around the room, "Look at them -
nothing more than sheep waiting to be slaughtered and
spending their idle time contentedly munching til then!"
She looked at the waiter who seemed to be watching her
curiously, "We have to stop meeting like this. People are
starting to notice and that just won't do." She held up a hand
to forestall any comment that might have been forthcoming,
"I have known for sometime now that I should break this off
but I just couldn't seem to escape your eyes, those
wonderful, mysterious eyes. Heaven knows it's not your
conversation I crave, although you say more with a moment
of silence than so many who would speak volumes. Perhaps
it's the timing - I just don't know. You always know when to
shut up and just listen, like now."
She toyed with the steak on her plate, using the sharp
knife to slice it into bite-sized pieces, thinking of her plans
for the future, "Oh how I wish you could sweep me off my feet
and just take me away from all of this . . . .but I know it isn't
possible. Still a girl can dream. You are the only one who
knows my heart, sees the real me. Why, do you know that
dippy neighbor of mine actually called me crazy yesterday?!?
. . .And she isn't the only weirdo around either. . .maybe
falling under the spell of your eyes makes me seem flighty to
others? Still it is mean of them to say things like that to a
girl and they ought to be punished." She toyed with her
steak a little more, hardly eating anything.
"You didn't come here just to listen to me ramble on like
this. What do you want to talk about?". . . .She waited in
silence for a time then , in the absence of a reply she spoke;
"You just sit and look at me but wait!- What's that I see in
your eyes? NO! I am NOT crazy just because that dippy
neighbor said so! I know you didn't say so but I see the
thought in your eyes. . .I'll show you AND her. . .I'll show you
all! You and your eyes!"
Throwing the money for her meal down on the table she
stormed out of the restaurant. The perplexed waiter
watched her go. As he began to have her table cleared he
looked down at the meal and wondered why the lady had
never touched her baked potato with its many eyes. Why had
she been talking to herself so much? He also wondered
where the steak knife had gone.
