Scenes of Crime

Last updated: 19th April 2000

Welcome to 'Scenes of Crime' - a site concerned with novels, films and TV programmes concerning crime and detective fiction, particularly those based in my native United Kingdom, and England particular. You may have also noted that this page has hopped across the Atlantic to the UK version of FortuneCity, as a way of avoiding transatlantic traffic charges, but also because the URL seems a little more appropriate. The old URL will work for a while to redirect traffic, though. Lastly, please feel free to mail me or use the woefully-underused guestbook to let me know your thoughts.
Newsflash! The incomparable John Baker, author of the excellent Sam Turner series, has asked me to pass on details of what sounds like an excellent idea, a Northern crime writers collective. From John himself:

"The other thing is that a group of seven Northern crime writers have got together in a kind of virtual collective to help us promote each other'swork. The group is known as Murder Squad and is comprised of John Baker, Ann Cleeves, Chaz Brenchley, Cath Staincliffe, Margaret Murphy, Stuart Pawson and Martin Edwards. Our first gig is at the opening of the new Borders bookshop at Cheshire Oaks (Wirral) on the 23rd March from 6 pm to 8 pm. There will be a panel, readings, question and answer session and even a competition with prizes."

So, anyone in the area - sounds like it would be an excellent evening with a panel of hugely talented writers. Let me know if you go and tell me what went on. Watch this space for more appearances...

Another Chaz Brenchley-related item - Jean Rogers has kindly submitted a review of Brenchley's Dispossession. Although not Chaz's novels are not crime in the normal sense of the term, I'm not a purist and Chaz Brenchley is a superb writer, and well worth checking out. Jean's review is here and you can read more about Chaz at his Northern Gothic website and Jean's excellent Outremer site.

If any of you have queries, complaints or even suggestions, then just drop a note through the letterbox below and I'll see what I can do. Also, if you have any written contributions in the way of reviews, commentaries or counterblasts to my diatribes, then I would be more than happy to consider them for inclusion.
UPDATE!
Okay, I've had a chance to straighten things out a little - I've popped a few more reviews up, and had a good clearout of all the links that aren't working and even put a few more interesting links in. Actually, if you find any links that aren't working, please let me know so I can put them right. Others might be wondering about my much vaunted Cambridge and Scotland specials. Still in the embryonic stage, though the list of Scots, Oxonian and Cantabrigian novels is still available. Watch out for pieces on Ian Rankin, one of Britain's finest novelists, and his Edinburgh-set Inspector Rebus novels, and on the excellent Susannah Gregory, author of the medieval Cambridge novels featuring Dr. Matthew Bartholemew, Fellow of Michaehouse. Meanwhile, a few more reviews have been posted, and I've just finished writing a piece on the historical crime novel (click here.
Note: Thanks to those nice folks at NetForward, this page can always be reached as http://www.deathsdoor.com/penn/ and me as penn@deathsdoor.com. Hopefully this should remain constant even if I move between webhosts etc.
