fariņa were formed in September 1995. They are based in London. Matt and Mark have wandered around the fringes of British independent music for years, having previously played in The Palace of Light and Mabel Joy - both of whom released acclaimed albums on cult label Bam-Caruso. Cliff, an old school friend of Mark's, played drums live with Mabel Joy, although he did not appear on their album. Tim officially joined fariņa in 2001, having played guitar with the band at a couple of gigs during the previous year. All are multi-instrumentalists, singers and songwriters. |
fariņa recordings are carefully assembled in their second-hand laboratory of sound, Hummingbird Studios, where tunes, words and rhythms are siphoned through a collection of obsolete machines and wires, and blended into miniature zero-budget elegies. Instrumentation is a hybrid of traditional guitar, bass, piano and drums, elaborated with Morricone-style trumpet, electronics, sound effects and assorted oddments. |
fariņa were featured on the Dreamy Record compilation Head in the Clouds in 1999; during 2000 they released two singles - one apiece on Pickled Egg and Bad Jazz. Their debut album, which took four and a half years to make, was released in February 2001. They play live intermittently. |
