EGG 28: FARIÑA
‘THREE PEOPLE’ CD & LP
Pickled Egg are proud to present ‘Three People’, the debut album from London-based three piece, Fariña. Influenced by late 60's/early 70's songwriters like David Ackles and Tim Hardin, and American pop experimentalists from the Beach Boys to Flaming Lips, the group have previously released singles on Pickled Egg and Bad Jazz, plus a track on the Dreamy compilation ‘Head in the Clouds’, all to critical acclaim.
The first recording session for what has become ‘Three People’ took place in late-summer 1995 in a rehearsal studio in Hackney, NE London. The last mix was completed in Spring 2000. In the intervening four and a half years, these 12 zero-budget pop symphonies were crafted in the band's Hummingbird studio - a Fostex 8 track, a porta-studio and a 286 computer located at whatever premises were available at the time. Instrumentation is a hybrid of traditional guitar, bass, piano and drums, elaborated with Morricone-style trumpet, electronics, sound effects and assorted oddments.
"Classic songwriting threesome who use minimal instrumentation to furnish their traditional songs. A lo-fi vibe, with echoes of desolate songsmiths such as Jack/Jacques and even slight echoes of Palace [‘Two People’]."
[Record Collector]
"There are probably undiscovered Amazonian tribes making music that's more commercial than this [‘Two People’], but naturally, that's part of their charm." [Victoria Segal, NME]
"'If She Could Blame Him' ably demonstrates why whistling on songs should be more common, nay compulsory. 'Displace’, on the other hand, can despatch a grown man to a weeping heap at ten paces, and I should know." [Mark Barton, Record Mart & Buyer]
"Another melancholic masterpiece. ‘Confession TV’ is grandiose and humorous, and with a distinct US indie tone, whilst remaining quintessentially British. The b-side, ‘Nothing Lasts’, is a beautiful instrumental with baroque sounds and synthesizers complementing each other with toe-tapping grace." [Record Collector]
"...shining lights such as Farina's 'Twilight Of The Empire' with its lazy, locked groove, fighting spirit and trumpet,..."
[Ngaire, Music 365]
