What were you thinking of when you looked up to the sky
Lying on your back on a cold night, watching for shooting stars?
If the sky above were the world, then maybe you could say
Shooting stars, they leave a mark before they fade away
What was I thinking of when I said my heart would break
When I closed my eyes and counted ten, and prayed I'd never wake?
But all my instincts survived, and they're telling me, some day
All these fears will be laid on the shore, and washed away to sea
Beneath the city lights you can sometimes see stars fall
Where mercury and sodium make a halo for us all
If the sky above is the world, then maybe some day
We'll gather round on a clear night
Lie down in the long grass
Fix our eyes on the bright stars that never fade away
