Billy Connolly:
A Scot in the Arctic

For some reason known only to himself, Billy Connolly allowed the same people who sent Joanna Lumley to a desert island paradise to make Girl Friday to send him on an equally exciting adventure, though a bit colder - to the Arctic. The Canadian Northwest, to be precise, for the making of Billy Connolly, a Scot in the Arctic.

Taking along his trusty rifle from his Territorial Army days, Billy thought himself prepared to live alone for a week on six feet of frozen ocean, with only the polar bears for company.

The local Eskimo guides set him straight though, and Billy was soon ready to set off on the husky-driven sled with a new outer covering of seal-skin clothes. Last minute rifle practice was required, and Billy was shown the age-old techniques of igloo-building. The camera crew accompanied him as they headed away from the last outpost of civilization.

Through snippets of video diary, Billy let us into the secrets of going to the toilet in subzero temperatures. Apart from the obvious challenge of surviving alone in such a hostile environment, Billy kept his spirits up with hearty banjo playing.

Billy was determined to try his hand at building an igloo. But apparently, it was more difficult that it looked, and Billy's effort collapsed into itself!

Not bathing for a week also took its toll, and Billy just had to prove his returning camera crew wrong by running out of his tent completely naked for a snow-bath! Luckily, a conveniently placed snowflake put on later by the backroom boys hid most of the horror!

To his credit, Billy survived what was potentially a dangerous time alone, and returned untouched by either hypothermia or polar bear.
