Live review by Chikako

Nuno backstage, Tokyo 24 May 1997. Contributed by Atsuko Fukuada.Nuno played 6 shows in Japan. I attended four of them: Yokohama (May 9th), Nagoya (May 14th), Tokyo (May 15th) - at a big hall, Tokyo (May 16th) 1999.

I think the most exciting show was Nagoya. It was a small club but the audience was REALLY loud! Nuno said, "It sounds like Budokan!". Also the show on 15th was great, too. The venue was a big hall with seats and Nuno played in front of 2,500 people. It was a sold-out show.

Well, well, well....I've got something to say about the last show in Japan, on May 16th. It started just like other shows in Japan, but because it was the last show of the tour, we expected something special. Yeah, there WAS something very special, but most of the audience didn't give it a warm welcome...

After the band played "Hole Hearted", Nuno said that he was going to do something special. He introduced a Japanese band (I don't remember the name of the band), and let them play their own song. The singer of the band told us that they met Nuno somewhere and hit it off with each other so Nuno invited them to the show and told them that they could play on the stage for the Mourning Widows' audience. The band had nothing to do with EXTREME nor the Mourning Widows. They played their own song in Japanese. During they played, Nuno, Donovan and Jeff left the stage. That Japanese band played using Nuno's guitar, amplifiers... all the equipment.

Most of us were confused. We went to the show because we love Nuno and the Mourning Widows. We paid 6,500 yen (about $54 US) for one show to see and listen to the Mourning Widows playing. I was lucky because I had seen three more shows before last night, but there were many people who went to see Nuno's show only last night.

Okay, the Japanese band finished their song. But Nuno told them to play another song! Hey, it was the last show in Japan! Why we had to be patient with that strange Japanese band? The show was pretty exciting and great until that Japanese band appeared and played. Or, we should NOT be patient with it and throw something to the stage and yell "You suck!"? The Japanese band played another song. I expected Nuno to play more of HIS songs, but he played only "Get The Funk Out" as usual and left the stage.

I don't have any idea that Japanese band released their CDs by the same Japanese company as Nuno or not. I don't say anything about that Japanese band. It must be a wonderful opportunity for them, and maybe Nuno thought the same. But, I'll never listen to that band because their two songs spoiled our fun. The two songs took the good mood and vibration away from us all. Oh, I should have GOT THE FUNK OUT of the venue because I didn't like what I saw there...

After the show, I discussed about it with my friends and I realised that I wasn't the only one to think like that. I visited a Japanese web site about Nuno and found that there were many more fans who have the same thoughts as mine.

BTW, Nuno and the Mourning Widows were great. I was lucky to see four shows in Japan. But I want to forget about the last show.
