After the house which was built for my father and the (1897) red brick house opposite the old Manor, I do not think there was any new building in Hillesley until the Council houses at the Deans were built after the war. Nevertheless, during that time and for many years before that, the firm of Reuben Werrett was very active in the district. In the time of which I write the firm had its headquarters where Mr. Desmond Hopkins' house stands. Quite a number of men were employed, doing, amongst other things, all the repairs for the Alderley estate. The Hale property then extended from Leys Farm near Wotton to Ham Green on the A46. The five large farms on the estate had literally acres of stone-tiled roofs to be kept in order. It was quite a procession of men who walked daily from the Werrett yard to their work at Alderley and Tresham.
