How do you feel...?

Back

Written By: Brian and Ridge

What is being a punk all about to you?

Ridge- Deffinantly has nothing to do about who is in or out.

Brian- The reason people are so against it is because punks anti-glam. And when a band "sells out" it is going for the glam or fame that punk was against when it started out.

Ridge- I dont think its so much anti-glam, but when bands "sell out" they do it a lot for the money and thats against the DIY (Do it Yourself) mentallity which a lot of punk is based on.

Brian- I'm not saying there is anything wrong with signing with a major label to make a good living. But if you have to step on people to get there, or forget your roots (refering to when they helped make the punk scene), I am totaly against that. When you change the style of your music for glamour, money, and fame that is against the politics of punk.

Ridge- There is nothing wrong with changing your musical style, I mean if you don't want to play punk anymore thats your choice, and its not up to us to tell them what to play...play what makes you happy.

Brian- But how do you feel if they are changing thier music purely to gain more money when they don't even need it?

Ridge- What do you mean by "don't really need it."

Brian- When you are making plenty of money as it is so you and your family can live a good life but you "sell out" to make more money for just the sake of making more money.

Ridge- First off I don't think its all about the money, and I don't think its so black and white. You make your music good so that people will listen to your message, so when a lot of people start liking that band people think its selling out when the band had no choice in it.

Brian- It seems as though we are arguing two different points here. You say that its not the bands fault when people start liking them, I am saying it IS their fault when they go against everything they stood for, for the sake of money. But I don't think all of that has much to do with punk anyways. Granted it does have some trats of punk in there, but being a punk is about DIY but not for yourself. Being punk is about caring about whats happening to your world and standing up to unnecessary authority trying to control the way you think, act, and say. But to some people, punk is just a trend. I sincerly hope that ends, but as our (sub)culture grows, we are bound to get more ignorant kids joining the crowd. We need to accept these kids with open arms and invite them into our culture as long as their intention is to help and NOT destroy it. Punk is about unity and standing together against the corruption in the government and society.

Ridge- I see how it is, you cut off all my statements to little sound bites, then when I'm on the phone you wax all intelectual and make me look stupid. I hate you.
