GENDER ROLES
A female journalist had gone to Kuwait before the Gulf War to report
on the country's fairly archaic views on sexual equality and was
dismayed to report the subordinate role that females played in Kuwaiti
society. What shocked her most was the fact that, when walking down
the streets in towns and cities, the men walked ahead while the women
were forced to walk 10 metres behind.
Returning to Kuwait for the first time since the Gulf War, the female
journalist was pleased to see that the roles were now reversed, with
the females walking in front and the men walking 10 metres behind.
While interviewing a Kuwaiti politician she asked him about the role
reversal: "Sir, why this shift in attitudes - why do women now take
the dominant role in public?"
"Simple," replied the politician, "Landmines!"
