Drugs officers are in the dog house after a stray mongrel ate a haul
of cannabis plants which were due to be used as evidence. It happened
at Bath Police Station where officers used the kennels to store the
seized plants because of their pungent aroma.
Later, another officer put the stray in the dog pound unaware the
drugs were already there. When the drugs police returned they found a
damaged polythene bag, chewed-up evidence and a dog behaving in a
peculiar manner.
A drugs unit officer, who did not want to be named, said: "Of course,
the officer who put the dog in the dog house didn't know there was a
bag full of cannabis inside.
"We found the mongrel who had been picked up from the streets happy as
Larry and very hyperactive.
"The vet said he was fine, although apparently he was lucky to be
unharmed. It is not unusual for seized drugs to be put into the dog
house because the normal drugs storage room is normally full and
smells to high heaven."
A police spokesman said the drug found by the mongrel was known as
"skunk" - a high-strength cannabis variant which is strong-smelling.
He added: "The mongrel ripped open the bag and devoured them. We do
realise that this situation might appear comic, but we are taking it
very seriously. We are seriously disturbed that we could have made
such a fundamental error."
Bath Police said a suspect received just a caution for owning the
cannabis plants after the evidence disappeared.
