41 Squadron was shot down and killed in his Spitfire
I (N3038) on the 29th of July 1940 at 07:45hrs. He
had been in combat with Ju 87's and
Bf
109's off Dover. |
| P/O S.R.Gane was with No
248 Squadron during the Battle of Britain flying in Blenheim's. On the 20th of October 1940 he was on
a recce sortie off the Norwegian coast flying in Blenheim
IVf (L9453) when he was shot down and killed. The other members of
the crew were M.D.Green & N.J.Stocks. |
| F/O F.T.Gardiner joined
No 610 Squadron in July 1940. He was wounded in the arm on the 25th of July 1940 by a Bf
109 over the Channel at 15:20 but he managed to land safely. On the 25th of August 1940 he baled out
of his Spitfire I (K9931) after
combat with a Bf 109
over Dover at 19:20hrs and was slightly
wounded. Also during the Battle of Britain he shot down a Bf
110. Gardiner was awarded the D.F.C. on the 10th of March 1944. |
| P/O J.R.Gardener a pilot
from No 141 Squadron was on patrol on the 19th of July 1940 in a Defiant
(L7016) when he was shot down by a Bf
109 of JG 51 and injured near Dover at 12:45hrs. His gunner D.M.Slatter
was K.I.A. |
| Sgt B.G.D.Gardner joined
No 610 Squadron on the 27th of July 1940. Gardner shot down three Bf
109's on the 12th of August and another on the 14th of August,
when he was wounded in the arm. |
| While attached to No 3 Squadron in France,
F/O P.M.Gardner
claimed three victories there. On returning to No 32 Squadron after
France fell, he added another before the start of the Battle. Gardner destroyed two Bf
109's on the 12th of August 1940, a Ju
88 on the 15th and another Bf
109 on the 16th. Gardner was awarded the D.F.C. on the
30th of August 1940. On the 11th of July 1941 he was shot down over France and spent
the rest of the war as a P.O.W. |
| Sub Lt. Richard Exton 'Jimmy' Gardner
(F.A.A.) joined No 242 Squadron on the 1st of July 1940 from the RNVR. He wore naval Uniform
but was subject to RAF discipline as if he was a full member of a Squadron. |
| Sgt W.J.Garfield of No
248 Squadon was killed along with his crew (B.W.Mesner
& A.Kay) on the 13th of September 1940 at 19:00hrs.
Their Blenheim IVf (L9451) went
missing during a sortie off the Norwegian coast. |

G.W.Garton flew Hurricane's
with No 43 Squadron during the Battle of Britain. He was later to become
a Wing Commander an was awarded the D.S.O. and the D.F.C. |

Squadron was K.I.A. on the 30th of October 1940. He was shot down in his Spitfire
II (P7375) by a Bf 109 over Ashford,
Kent at 16:10hrs. |
| S/L G.Desmond Garvin
of No 264 Squadron and his gunner F/Lt R.C.V.Ash
were killed on the 28th of August 1940 at 09:00hrs.
Their Defiant I (L7021) was shot
down by a Bf 109 of JG 26 near Faversham. |
| P/O R.S.Gaskell
of No
264 Squadron wrote off his Defiant
(L6965) on the 24th of August 1940 at 16:00hrs when was in combat
with a Bf 109. He was slightly hurt
but his gunner (W.H.Machin)
died of his wounds. |
| F/Lt L.M.'Elmer' Gaunce
a Canadian flew with No 615 Squadron. He, A.Eyre and Dutch Hugo destroyed 3 Bf
109's over the convoy 'Bosom' in mid July 1940. On the 11th of August 1940 was awarded the D.F.C. Gaunce was
wounded on the 18th of August 1940 at 13:15hrs in a Hurricane
I (P2966). He was in combat with a Bf
109 near Sevenoaks in Kent and baled out of his stricken aircraft. L.M.Gaunce
was shot down again on the 26th of August 1940 at 15:15hrs by a Bf
109, he baled out of his Hurricane
I (R4111) off Herne Bay and was rescued. He was promoted to Squadron Leader with
No 41 Squadron. On the 19th of November 1941 he was killed in action
on a Rhubarb flying a Spitfire Vb (AB858)
in the afternoon off St. Lo. |
| P/O G. 'Jeff' N.Gaunt of
No 609 Squadron was shot down a killed in his Spitfire
I (R6690) on the 15th of September 1940 at 12:30hrs
near Kenly. |
| F/O J.R.H.Gaynor of No
615 Squadron was wounded when he crash landed on the 26th of August 1940 at 16:50hrs. His Hurricane
I (P2878) had been in combat over Portsmouth. |
| Sgt R.J.V.Gent was with
No 32 Squadron during July and most of August. Gent was posted to No 501 Squadron in late August and
shot down a Bf 109 on the 25th of
October 1940. Sgt R.J.V.Gent was killed in a flying
accident on the 2nd of January 1941, aged 24. |
| Sgt D.G.Gibbins joined
No 54 Squadron on the 10th of August 1940. Gibbins shot down an Me 109 on the 31st of August but was
then his Spitfire(X4054) was shot
down over Hildenborough and he baled out safely.
It is believed he was shot down by a Hurricane.
He scored one more kill before the end
of the Battle. |

603 Squadron baled out of his Spitfire
I (V7260) on the 31st of August 1940 at 13:40hrs. He was shot
down by a Bf 109 over the Thames Estuary
but was not hurt. On the 6th of September 1940
he was wounded in combat with a Bf 109
over Mayfield at 09:30hrs. He baled out of
his Spitfire I (V6647). |
| F/Lt Denys E.Gillam of
No 616 Squadron baled out of his Spitfire
I (X4181) on the 2nd of September 1940 at 16:35hrs. He had been
in combat with a Bf 110 over Tonbridge,
Kent. He was unhurt. |

Squadron on the 5th of August 1940. Following a combat on the 11th of August 1940, at 10:50hrs off
Portland in his Hurricane (P3783)
was posted M.I.A., aged 26. |

from No 66 squadron was K.I.A. on the 4th of October 1940 at 16:00hrs while on patrol in his Spitfire
I (X4320). He failed to return from an interception of a He
111
off the East Coast. His aircraft crashed
off Covenhithe, Suffolk. |
| P/O K.R.Gillman joined
No 32 Squadron on the 10th of May 1940, but did not fly his first operational sortie until the 7th of
June 1940. K.R.Gillman shot down a Bf
109 on the 19th of July 1940. P/O KR Gillman was shot down and killed
on the 25th of August 1940, at 19:00hrs off Dover in a Hurricane
I (P2755), aged 19. |

I (X4271) over Wanstead after combat. He was injured by civilians who attacked him? |
| Sgt A.G.Girdwood of No
257 Squadron was on patrol in his Hurricane
I (P3708) on the 18th of August 1940. He baled safely out
after combat with a Bf 110 over the
Thames Estuary, at 18:00hrs. Girdwood was K.I.A on the 29th of October
1940 at 16:40hrs while he was taking off in his Hurricane
I (V6852) from North Weald as the airfield was under attack by Bf
109's of LG 2. |
