No. 39 "RHOS"

No. 39 "RHOS"
Country of Origin: United Kingdom.
Builders: Hudswell Clarke Co, Leeds (1308) Year 1918.
No. of cylinders: 2 (15" x 22") Boiler Pressure: 160 p.s.i.
Driving wheel diameter: 3'7" Weight: 25 tons
Original Owner: Lloyds Ironstone Co. Corby.

No. 39 was ordered by Lloyds Ironstone on the 22nd November 1917 and was delivered new on the 15th January 1918, eventually being absorbed into the Stewarts and Lloyds Company, with the nationalisation into British Steel. The loco operated in the Glendon and Corby areas hauling quite heavy iron ore trains considerable distances, hence the full mechanical lubrication system.

After diesel locos took over the work (including our two class 14s), "Rhos" was sold and displayed at Burnham Market for many years. The loco was bought by the present owner and stored at the Rutland Railway Museum, Cottesmore.

"Rhos" requires a full overhaul and has been moved to Wansford.

Recently completed work.

DATE PROGRESS
18/8/2001
  • The overhaul was started.
  • Work commenced with removal of paint and surface rust from the frames.
  • A replacement chimney has been ordered.
29/9/2001
  • All four buffers have now been removed and dismantled.
  • It was discovered that one large spring needs to be replaced. Interesting that the broken spring came from a buffer where the grease was in reasonable condition. The grease in the other three buffers had dried out and solidified.

  • Components still to be cleaned and painted are two small springs and the inside of the buffer plates.

  • Due to committments to our other Locos, work on Rhos has been on hold. In the last couple of weeks there has been further work on removal of surface rust on the accessible parts of the frames between the wheels together with the application of Red Oxide.
20/8/2002
  • The front step has been taken off the loco, surface rust has been removed and been coated with Red Oxide.
  • The removal of the step has given easier access to the section of the frames behind. Rust has also been removed from this area and coated with Red Oxide.
  • The step will be replaced on the loco within the next couple of weeks.
4/10/2003 Since the last entry Rhos has received periodic attention, the following work having been completed:
  • The step was replaced on the loco as previously mentioned.
  • The sand box control rods running from the cab to the front box have been removed from the loco, cleaned of rust and given a coat of red oxide.
  • The vertical control rod, in the cab, for the front sand box was found to be damaged and missing it's handle. We are currently making a replacement control rod and handle.
