This process requires around 6Gb of HD space

This is arguably the best method available to create high quality VCDs from DVDs.

I have seen (and used) simplified methods to create VCDs, they may run well on the PC, but if you shortcut this tutorial your CDs will not work properly on stand alone units

Required software:

DeCSS

FlasKMPEG

Panasonic MPEG Plugin

DvMpeg

Xing Encoder

iFilmEdit

Installation

Unzip DeCSS and FlasKMPEG to the chosen directories

Install the Panasonic Plugin to the FlasKMPEG directory. The plugin with add the file "cm-mpeg-pwi2.0e.prm" rename this file to "panasonic.cm.flask"

Unzip and Install DvMpeg and iFilmEdit

When installing XingMpeg first use the registry file included in the zip to allow the install to proceed. Only install the Encoder and shared filesand do not use the Xing filters as the default for Mpeg playback

(all serials/cracks are in the zip file if needed)

Ripping/Decoding the Movie

See the seperate Decrypting Tutorial

Converting the .VOB files to Mpeg

Start FlasKMPEG

Select File/Open and find and highlight VTS_01_1.VOB

When you open this file you should get a box showing all the .VOB files you extracted, they will be treated as one logical file.

If you get an option box showing multiple audio or video files try one then the other, record about 10 seconds to check sound quality (and Language)

In Options/MPEG Output Options set to PAL (or NTSC) VCD and I set colour correction to TV (It's up to you)

In Options/Global Project Options set Audio Mode to 'Encode Audio'and set audio output to 441000 (required for VCD standard)

NB As far as I can remember all other settings are default but please familiarise yourself with the instructions included with the software for further information

Select Run.../Start Conversion, a dialog box and the conversion box will appear. Confirm the dialog box and wait for the encoding to begin, watch the first stages to ensure the process has begun properly (if not you may need to extract the .vob files again). You now have some time to kill. The encoding can be run in the background and you can pause the process while you carry out other resource hungry tasks. (However I recommend you leave the PC to do it’s stuff in piece)

NB Allow about 10min per minute of video for encoding (Yep, 20hrs to encode a 2hr movie): The finished file will be around 1 to 1.5 Gb

At the end of this process you will have an mpeg1 file on your harddrive (run it and check a few sections for quality)

You can now delete the .vob files if you need the space.

This Stage seems stupid, but skip it and your VCDs will not be right!!!!!

De-Multiplex the movie (create seperate Audio and Video files)

Select Mpeg Demultiplexor from the DVmpeg folder, Select your mpeg file and an output directory with an least the same space available as the mpeg file size. This does not take long, but don’t use the PC while it proccesses. You now have 2 files in the output directory (****.mp2, ****.mpv)

Multiplex the files you’ve just created (told you it was stupid)

Use Xing Mpeg Encoder, select a new job, choose VideoCD (Pal or NTSC), next select stream type, system, and the video and audio files you have created (the audio will not show in browse, type * in the file name box and press enter to show all files), select an output filename, and click finish. Now hit the Encode button and sit back (again, it doesn’t take long, but Dont Use The PC)

Chopping the Mpeg to fit a CD

DO NOT USE VCD Cutter. I know my old tutorial said to use it I was wrong. ONLY USE iFilmEdit, anything else screws up the format. Start iFilmEdit, open the Xing created file (it will appear the the bottom window, it isn’t showing the first frame, don’t worry). In Preferences set VideoCD mode to ‘VideoCD’. Drag the image into the player, you are now at the first frame, select ‘mark in’ you can now preview the movie and select a suitable cut point for your CD (You can record up to 74min on a CD, regardless of file size) and select ‘mark out’. Now in the record window press record, when this is complete, check the quality then hit ‘make movie’. Save this as Disk1.mpg (or whatever) now I suggesst you mark in from 10-30 secs before the mark out point from Disk1, mark out at the end of the file and create disk2. Obviously if it is a very long movie (Titanic, Saving Private Ryan) you may need to cut three sections of film.

Recording VCD standard

I found Instant CD Wizard from VOB to be the best recorder for VCDs. Use the Multimedia upgrade and Instant video will build a VCD 1.1 or 2.0 compliant disc from any .mpg or .avi files just by draging and dropping. The latest versions of Nero, EZ CD Creator and Win On CD all support VCD creation. It is really just a case of dragging and dropping the files.
