Evacuation
A new evacuation scheme, launched in February 1940 was a complete failure. It was planned to move 670 000 children, but by the end of April only 1 householder in 50 was prepared to offer a home to these children in 'safe' areas and less than 20% of those eligible had registered.
Small scale evacuations did take place throughout the war, in June of 1940 with the situation in France worsening and invasion seeming imminent children were evacuated from ports and coastal towns to places of safety inland.
None of these later evacuations quite caught the imagination as did the the first one.
