Family and community morals were very much in part of everyday life and did in fact mold most of us into hard working, honest and caring individuals. It is unfortunate that the Gorbals achieved notoriety through the activities of individuals like Jimmy Boyle, who created a stereotype of a community as being hard drinking, violent and dominated by greed and selfishness. Many of us, whilst growing up on the same streets, discovered at an early age the importance of facing up to difficulties and challenging the system in order to improve life for our families and the community as a whole, rather than just the individual. It is credit to both my parents that despite dreadful circumstances, they raised five children, bringing them out of poverty and enabling them to live a better life. This website compliments the working progress of an eventual book about my family living in the Gorbals. It is a reminder of where my roots began and of the struggle my ancestors experienced over the last hundred years. Photographs of the Gorbals are few and far between and are usually in black and white. They often fail to capture the scenes and atmosphere that I experienced as a child. In order to recapture my childhood memories I have taken up painting at forty something years old. By sharing my paintings on this web page, it is hoped this will revive memories of others who lived through the same experiences, as well as presenting a more positive image of a lost community.
