Wynd Church

The Wynd or 'Wine' Church as I pronounced it, was situated at the corner of Crown Street and Cathcart Road and was opened for worship in 1889. Despite it's huge size and soot blacked walls, it had a warm and welcoming atmosphere. My family went to the Wynd Church every Sunday, where we were greeted warmly at the doors by my faither's old friend, the minister John Bisset.  My parents enjoy going to churchmy ma's soprano voice  complimented my faither's confident tenor voice that drowned out the weaker sounds of parishioners next to him.

Half way through the service all the children were ushered ben to the side hall where Sunday school took place. I never understood why it was called school because it was generally great fun and we were all encouraged to chat, sing and play games, all of which I later didn't associate with school. The teachers were always cheerful and played along to songs with their guitars. My favourites included 'Jesus loves me', 'Give me oil in my lamp' and 'Lord of the Dance'. I'm not sure if these are the correct titles but it's how I remember them. Every Sunday after the service, we made our way up the spiral staircase at the rear of the church, to spend the afternoon with the church caretakers. We felt very special to be friends with people who lived above the church. My sister and I received various certificates from the church in our early years. The first was at our joint christening which took place on the third of December 1961 and was performed by Minister John Bisset. The minister signed both our gifts when we returned to the house for a wee tea following the service. My three brother were also christened at the Wynd Church by John Bisset . The building was eventually closed in 1978 and demolished in the early 1980's. The stain glass windows, depicting famous explorers, were rescued by the People's Palace. The fountain in the foreground of the painting still exists and has been relocated to a site in Gorbals Street opposite the Citizens' Theatre.
