Davis Cup
Established in 1900 as an annual international tournament by American player
Dwight Davis. Originally called the International Lawn Tennis Challenge
Trophy. Challenge round system until 1972. Since 1981, the top 16 nations
in the world have played a straight knockout tournament over the course
of a year. The format is a best-of-five match of two singles, one doubles
and two singles over three days. Note that from 1900-24 Australia and New
Zealand competed together as Australasia.
