Notes:

A number 8 dressed for the Strom but did not appear to take to the ice.  31 Danny Lorenz and 30 Stevie Lyle started in nets.  The Panthers starting forward lines were Poirer/Hadden/Savoie, Drouin/Moria/Tait, Nieckar/Weber/Wallenberg.  The Panthers starting defensive lines were Evans/Norris, Pope/Carlsson, Maloney/Drolet.  The team captaincy had yet to be awarded when this game was played.

At 32.55 the Storm took a time out after conceding two goals in quick sucession.

At the start of the third period the Storm replaced 30 Stevie Lyle with 33 Mike Torchia in nets.

At 52.15 while the Panthers were on the powerplay 77 Calle Carlsson was taking the puck around the edge of the blue line inside the attack zone when he appeared to be slashed by 22 Ivan Matulik.  Carlsson fell onto the ice, losing the puck, but no call was given.  Carlsson struggled to the bench as play continued to receive treatment.

At 56.32 a standard dump around the boards almost resulted in a bizarre goal when the puck caught some sort of edge on the boards and drifted sideways toward goal.  33 Mike Torchia was badly wrongfooted but managed to stop the puck drifting along the goal line with a diving save.

Well, what a day yesterday was! A great Panthers win coupled with an amazing England victory made it a great Saturday. Some of the hockey on display yesterday in the last two periods was brilliant to watch and especially that second period which completely blew Storm away and in my opinion no team in this league could have lived with us during those second 20 minutes. As I said last night though, how the hell do we live up to those standards that we set for ourselves?? If we can produce hockey of that calibre not every night as that would be impossible, but on regular occasions then we ought to have a good season in my book.

It also seems like we’ve sorted our powerplay out after a whole season of trying! Lots of puck cycling in the offensive zone was pleasing to see with the majority of passes going where they were intended to go. I’d just like to say that I’m really pleased to see Calle back this year, we really missed his presence on the pp last year and poses a real threat when he’s on the ice. Also a mention for Greg Hadden too, he really deserved his award after yesterdays performance. That’s why so many of us were critical of him last year because we know what he’s capable of doing on the ice and for many reasons wasn’t living up to his reputation. That’s surely the best game he’s had for us since he scored those five goals and an assist in a game against Bracknell a few years back and hopefully we’ll see a few more of those performances this year.

The only moans I have about yesterday are about Darren Maloney and the choice of music played during the game. Firstly, Darren Maloney doesn’t seem to look fully fit to me and isn’t playing to the reputation that he’s gained throughout his career. Lets hope Paul whips him up into shape sooner rather than later. Secondly, is anyone getting tired of listening to the ‘Great Escape’ theme tune during the stoppages? Every bloody stoppage we get the same old theme and to be honest, it’s getting boring now. I accept that the music was appropriate last season when we were battling to avoid the dreaded ninth place, but why play it this season? Surely it’s an admission that we’re worse than the rest of ISL teams and will struggle again this season. Please put the song away in the same place as ‘Can We Fix It’ and use your imagination to come up with something more appropriate.

What a day!!!!!
Great all round performance after the 1st goal. Great to see a FIT AGAIN Greg back to his best, it is hard to look like you are 'up for it' when you're injured!  Thought Lorenz was much more solid but wish he could hold onto the odd shot, otherwise teams will suss this flaw out and pepper the goal and then crash the net.  Poirier had a superb game and the PP is lookin gud with Calle and PC as shooters.  Not to sure I would mess around with the first lines just yet.Keep PC,Mo,Tait;Savoie,Greg,Poirier; Then Wallenberg, Jinman and alternate Baz and Norris as and when.Randall can then focus on penalty kill and resting other players.  Overall balance of the team is good, I would like to see Paul put his skates on a couple of times though.

Not a moan in sight from me,

Like I said after Coventry FLAMES, I bit of confidence and support takes a team a long way, and I still think they have more gelling to do, so I'm very excited.  Hadden losing 10lbs over the summer had obvisously paid off especially with his speed.  Lorenz, no problem as far as I'm concerned, picking the puck out of the air and like someone said earlier giving up the rebounds that were allowing the game to flow.  I thought considering the hard men we have this season Storm were being naughty and I can't beleived Cloutman missed Calle's kidneys getting a bashing.

Great game...  Defence is still shaky and liable to panic, under duress but given time playing together this'll change.  First line was dynamite, Tait could have had a hatrick, Druin a brace and Moria is the face-off king off all time.... I think he lost one face off the whole game...  Hadden scored a hatrick ?
Ok if you say so......me, Savoie belted it in... but if the team are happy, so am I...  It is good to see Hadden skating and up for it and in a perverse way give us knockers credance for being able to spot (previous seasons) when he wasn't...  Shaggy... told ya if ya thought Hadden was good when IMHO he wasn't trying.....if he ever got round to putting the effort in he'd be amazin.....and he was a different player from face-off.  Neickar had a good game....Credit to Paul Adey for benching him for a shift or 2 following his unneccessary penalty. He has a job to do and getting called for stupid penalties isn't one of them.  The "Power Play Line"... DO NOT CHANGE IT ! The Cardiff pairing in defence....playing well.....Pope and Carlsson playing well...Maloney and Drol... playing well... Defence.... playing well... Well done Boys......

A shaky first 10 mins where I thought I had a bit of deja - vous from last season, but after the equaliser we were a different class. Looking at the storm line-up on paper they looked stronger, but I can now see the value in Poirer. The man never gives up and showed tremendous stength at times. There is also massive potential on the power play from Carlsson on the left and Drouin on the right, Goalies beware. A truely 5 star show, lets hope we can keep it up for the season.

My comedy moment from last night - a Storm player lining up a shot from the wing, fanning on the shot and ending up on his backside. Best move of the match deserved a goal - it was straight out of AK Bars game book when in the 3rd Tait, Drouin and Moria carved up the static Storm defence and Tait fluffed the return pass at the far post - if they carry on this way and maintain the confidence to play this freely it should be an entertaining season. Manchester were chippy last night in IMHO, they clutched and grabbed, with numerous spearing attempts by Busillo and butt endings from Romaniuk and Matulik looked slow (or maybe our guys looked quick) and seemed intent on chopping any lumber he could. Jason Hocking (whose name was spelt wrong I think) gooned it up all night, Miller and Short looked solid but Parrish and Preston looked out of sorts.

WOW ! Where did that come from ??? Agree with the poster lower down who said that after the first half of the first period it looked like Coventry all over again. But then that powerplay. Shoot, get rebound, recycle, shoot, get rebound, shoot, recycle, etc. THAT'S HOW YOU DO A POWERPLAY ! Hadden finished it off with three seconds of the PP left and the Panthers never looked back.

In the second half the Panthers were absolutely all over the Storm although the Shots tally didn't reflect it at 15-10. The goals just kept coming and Hads completed his hat trick with another mid-range blast into the corner of the net as his others had been.

The Storm called a time out to try and stop the rout, but a couple of minutes after they conceded another and Lyle was pulled in favour of Torchy for the third period. The steadied slightly conceding only one more, but we were well comfortable by this point and still looking for more goals.

Carlsson's slap shot is warming up and both Moria and Weber's goals were the result of them being hit by one of Carlsson's belters from the blue line. Special mention must be made of Frank Evans who did some fantastic poke checks which dispossessed a Storm forward on the verge of shooting from close range on about three occasions.

Cloutman had an indifferent game and yes, Matulik's slash which felled Carlsson could've been spotted from Mars. Three powerplay goals tonight which bodes well.

Comedy Moment Of The Match: Those sticky out bits on the boards again ! At least it was the opposition's netminder who was left sprawling rather than ours this time. I thought it was going in too, until Torchy dived to stop it. He's still a nice bloke by the way as I missed who scored the Storm goal and he shouted up the numbers from the bench to me. He also told Ginger it was nice to see him again ! You see, the players do remember fans.

Didn't Greg Hadden have a corker of a game?? Even Texpef was heard to say to The Mistress after the game "Didn't Hadden play good?? Yes, it's true - honest!

Hads is SO much faster than before, and you can tell he has his confidence back - whacking off shots from all distances and angles. And what a perfect start to his personal season - a hat-trick!
Wallenberg really impressed me, as did Carlsson, Savoie and Drolet (no-one will ever IMHO match Jimmy Paek, but I'm beginning to think that Drolet is a worthy successor to his #24 shirts...)
Moria looked well solid, and Poirier is just a GEM!

And for all the cynics and trolls out there - didn't Barry Neickar have a good game of HOCKEY today? A couple of smart shots, some damn good work moving the pucj forward - think he's speeded up a bit.

Oh, and Lorenz looked (to me) less worrying.... He's still giving up some rebounds, but they do tend to be ones that bounce high and/or far - giving him & the D a chance to jump on them.....

Was that really the same side as Wednesday? Brilliant game to watch as well as the obvious delight of the result. No doubt someone will post a full match report soon but I would like to say it would be criminal to separate Hadden & Poirier from each other. The two of them linked up so well (and Savoie didn't look bad with them either). I think we have to have a Nieckar/Jinman/Wallenberg line, but we shouldn't call it the third line. If this guy is all he's hyped up to be, put him with Wallenberg who's little and real speedy and Baz to protect them a bit (Wallenberg took one horrible check today right in front of me). Why do we have to a 1st line, 2nd line and 3rd line. Why can't we just have 3 fairly equal lines? Seems logical to me. At times last year the problem seemed to be the only people who could score was the Drouin/Struch/Tait line. (incidentally London now have 8 but Strudder still doesn't have a point!)

I too cannot believe the guy on the mic announcing we had a new netminder on the way when Lorenz was halfway through the game. I mean obviously he must have known in advance but still! Lorenz was much better today, he seemed to give rebounds when it didn't matter and not give them when it did (opposite of Wednesday).

Bizarre incident though when a Panther (can't remember who) tried to shoot the puck in behind the goal - Torchia went to get it, the puck hit an advertising board, went straight in to the middle of the ice where it got in to the ice of torchia's crease which he'd scuffed and started going in. Torchia did really well to get back and push it away with his stick.

Also before the game the announcer was obviously really proud of his line "There's a Storm coming from the West - please welcome the Manchester Storm." However then they didn't appear! and it took 3 attempts plus a linesman to go and dig them out before they appeared. And what was all that about a new ice entrance. Wow, they came out from somewhere else under a load of balloons!! Wahoo (sarky). If they want to be really dramatic they should get them to skate out of a giant Panther's head or something (though that might be a bit cheesy!).

And finally, after the Storm scored, Kayle Short skated back to the bench and winked at the linesman who smiled back. What was that all about???!!!!

Great first win of the new season for the new look Panthers! Solid team performance all round, although after the first half of the first period, I was thinking it was going to be a long winter again! Hads return to form was spectacular – he looks hungry again and Danny in goal has cut down those rebounds big time. Cloutman must have cursed taking the ice without his guide dog – how on earth did he miss some of the slashes the Storm players dished out? Particularly the one across the back of Carllson’s legs straight in front of him. Also chose to ignore Preston’s blatant butt-end on Ashley at the final hooter! Cringe moment of the game was the bloody DJ announcing half way through the game that we are getting another netminder with better stats than the last one we lost – what a pillock! Thankfully, Lorenz didn’t let it get to him and he continued to block the Storm. Well done lads – let’s hope England can now win too!
