Notes:
31 Danny Lorenz and 31 Joaquin Gage started in nets. The Panthers' starting forward line were Hadden/Poirier/Sjogren, Savoie/Moria/Tait, Drouin/Jinman/Wallenberg. The Panthers' starting defensive lines were Drolet/Paek, Carlsson/Norris, with Pope rolling round with the rest of the defence to cover the injured Darren Maloney.
This game was the second leg of the Challenge Cup semi-final and the Panthers were 3-0 down on aggregate from the first leg.
There was a minute's silence before the game as a mark of respect following the death of Princess Margaret earlier in the day.
31 Danny Lorenz appeared to leave the warm up injured. However he did start the game, though he seemed slow to get up on a number of occasions.
At 18.48, Ayr had a goal washed out by Referee Rowe for having a man in the crease.
16 Shawn Byram's Illegal Use Of Equipment penalty at 19.34 resulted after he'd been roughed by 24 Jimmy Drolet who had knocked his helmet off. Byram rather stupidly tried to play on under the delayed penalty without his helmet right in front of the referee.
At 28.43, there was the first of many scuffles. It broke out around the Panthers crease and 13 Dody Wood was in the middle of it having a go at 4 Brent Pope and others. At the following face off the Panthers swapped 44 Barry Nieckar into the line late to the applause of the crowd. Nieckar then spent the entire shift giving Wood a talking to and generally getting in his face.
At 32.14, netminder 31 Joaquin Gage went down injured in his crease behind the play. A stoppage was called while he received treatment on the ice, lying face down all the while. Referee Rowe then went to talk to a linesman and magicked up a 5 minute major penalty for Tripping (which he obviously didn't see any of as he called nothing at the time) on 11 Greg Hadden. It appeared that Hadden got his caught up in Gage's pads after he'd crashed the net and had been yanking his stick to get it free. Gage's miraculous recovery after Hadden had gone to the bin was not well received by the home crowd who booed and chanted 'Cheat' at him for the rest of the game.
At 34.03, 16 Shawn Byram received 2+10 for Checking From Behind. This seemed at odds with the standard 5+Game penalty which is usually levied for the offence.
At 34.42, 4 Brent Pope crashed the Ayr net and managed to elbow 31 Joaquin Gage in the mask as he fell. This sparked off yet another scuffle, which this time had 8 Clayton Norris and 11 Cam Bristow belting each other over the heads of the stripeys. No penalties were given.
At 57.00, netminder 31 Danny Lorenz tried to field the puck off the back boards, but it bounced at a straighter angle than he'd anticipated and he had to play it in front of the net with his stick. He didn't do this quite as well as he might have liked however and the puck came within three inches of scoring a ridiculously comical own goal. Lorenz thankfully recovered to stop the puck going in and the defencemen cleared it.
At 57.36, the Panthers called a time out. As they still needed two goals to take the game to overtime, they pulled their netminder.
At 57.53, the Panthers rather embarrassingly lined up with SEVEN men on the ice for a face off and incurred a Too Many Men bench penalty. They almost made the same mistake straight after before someone finally remembered how to count and 24 Jimmy Drolet made his way off the ice shouting at various team mates about who's job it was supposed to be to go where. They finally lined up 5 on 5 with no netminder.
Ayr's goal at 59.25 was scored into the empty net. 17 P.C. Drouin smashed his stick in two over the goal straight after.
When the Ayr Man Of The Match award was announced there were louds chants of 'ROWE ! ROWE ! ROWE !'.

coupla points on last nights game, thought for the most part its been best game i have seen from the panthers all season, good passing, hard work in the corners, less d&c, some good shots on the keeper, although we STILL dont crowd the next and shield the shot but oh well. Regarding two incidents last night
1. Gage and his incredible dying fly and miraculous recovery, from a panthers pov its bad whenever any player gets injured but from my vantive it looked like hadden crashed the net and caught gage on his exit, maybe intentional maybe not only hads knows that, however the performance we then got from gage till rowe decided in his infinite wisdom it was a penalty was beyond belief as shags says his recovery to make some fantastic saves was nothing short of a visit from jesus himself given he was next to deaths door lying prstrate on the ice as though in a coma. Sportsmanship i can understand but imho this was nothing short of cheating especially his reaction to the fans at the end of the game hamming it up then, (as well as other ayr players giving us the V sign which was hardly sporting considering they had won the game).
2. The blatent x checking from behind for which a penalty of 2+10 was given, wheren't we told at the start of the season apart from the fisticuffs this was a penalty they want to stop and hence a 5+game penalty would be given? Why was this player allowed to stay on the ice? Anyway well done to Ayr.

Well the dream is over & I think realistically it was never on the cards. You can never say never in this game but 3 goals is a big deficit to come back from. If we were leading 3-0 then I think we would have been extremely confident going into the game.

Hi all, I'll try & keep things short & "sweet" about last night. Rowe: All ways been cr@p as far as Im concerned, any other ref might have stopped the Ayr goonery but NO we had to have Rowe ref'ing. Adey: God Damn awful line changes AGAIN!!! The most important game of the season so far, 3-0 down, with Mugsy Maloney not playing not to mention Kelham & Moran unavailable & Adey doesnt dress for the game!!!! Paul, look here sparky, when the team needs that bit of extra effort & all hands to the pump it means you have to stop hiding behind the suit, stand up & be counted & get on the ice & PLAY!! Rest of the team played very well (Paek pure class, Savoie almost got in the the Ayr attack zone at one point) & I have to give special mention to one I usually end up being derogatory about, Ash Tait, great game lad. Put on 3 stone & your a league beater! Special mention to Dodo "The Chicken" Wood for proving to us all what we thought ....... that he really isnt up to much in the playing or fighting dept.

Well, can't really add too much to what's been said already,
have to say this though having watched hockey for 20+ years that's the
first time I've ever seen a 5 min' pen' for TRIPPING!!!! Slashing, which
KB is what Greg did & NOT spearing I could go with but tripping (must
be a new addition to the rule book)?!?!?
As soon as i saw Rowe step out on the ice, i new the
type of game he'd call, only the blatant stuff & let the clutch/grab/hook/hold
stuff go, seen him do it countless times before, he ain't ever gonna change!
Oh & 7 men on the ice?? Guess neither of our coaches passed their GCSE
maths then!! I don't think Ayr were that dirty, they just played a very
strong defensive & physical style which when your 3-0 up is exactly
what you should do!

Just to say the reason why no-one went for Hadden was that our players obviously had been told not to fight! Bristow was offered and he just laughed and Woody and Herbers declined too they just weren't biting, though I think that Molin? of all people had a little set to!
Good game though, Panthers played well and came out with all guns blazing my heart was in my mouth so many times!
Have too say didn't like the cries of cheat aimed at Gage when he got back up, he was down for about five (very worrying) minutes, I think too that someone from the Nottingham bench came over to see how he was, could be wrong though :-)
Have to agree Rowe was abysmal missed so many things -
from both sides!

Well, for 57 minutes that was an absolutely outstanding performance by the Panthers, I thought. Beautiful offensive work by Wallenberg, Jinman, Hadden, etc, outstanding work by the defence - who now seem to be almost telepathic in picking up rebounds from Danny - and what a performance by Lorenz himself, especially while injured! Picking MoM could not have been easy, there had to have been several candidates for it, but Jummy Paek was definitely a front-runner - his usual (how easily we get used to it!) impeccable defensive work, and an utter rocket of a goal!
Then the last 3 minutes......
WHAT THE (BLEEP)ING (BLEEP) DID THEY THINK THEY WERE
DOING?????
We've all seen stupid penalties, but that one deserves
a page all to itself... I think even Rowe couldn't believe it, cos he seemed
to just stand there in amazement! OK, trying to get 2 goals in just over
2 minutes is bloody difficult, and we probably wouldn't have done it. But
the Panthers had the momentum at that point, they had the attitude. Then
that unbelievably stupid "Too Many Men" infraction - and the momentum (and
man advantage) was lost. And they knew it - the intensity just vanished.
To cap it off, PC may have been understandably frustrated, but smashing
the stick like that? DUMB! That was probably about the only benefit we
got from having Rowe tonight - and of the others (certainly Carson [who
seems to hate Drouin] and Kirkham would have binned him).
I'm one of those who's been prepared to give Paul Adey a bit of slack in his on-the-job learning experience as coach. But I have to say - GET A BLOODY GRIP! Learn to count, please! There have been way too many bad line changes and "Too Many Men" infractions this season, but tonight's was definitely the final straw! I am NOT going to call for his head, but there needs to be some serious tightening-up on that bench.....
I'm not going to congratulate the Ayr Scottish Eagles ice-hockey team, however, as we didn't actually see any such creature - instead of an ISL team, we saw a WWF one. Various Eagle fans can dribble on all they like about "playing their road game" (and openly calling it "clutch & grab" - they actually think that's OK! - one rule for one, another for everyone else, eh?), but what we saw tonight was just pathetic - they have obviously decided that they don;t have the skill to take on other teams in a skating game, so they are going to make sure that nothing moves - at all. And what a gift for them to have "Let It Flow" Rowe reffing... they must have put the champagne on ice as soon as they saw him out there...

Well done to the Eagles - although not sure about your tactics Joaquin young fella me lad! Did things get slightly heated between the fans though or wot! Thought Clayton should have got MOM, played his wotsits off tonight and nearly scored again. In fact, was there more than one #8 on the ice as he seemed to be covering most positions!! Hadden now seems totally disinterested, sorry Cheza!! Paek = GOD!!

I was there to night and I gotta say it was a good game.
However being in block 17 I was in a more or less perfect place to see
the Hadden-Gage incident and I gotta say that Hadden speared Gage in what
has to be one of the dirtiest plays I've ever seen. Hadden was lucky that
Rowe didn't see it, it was a linesman that reported it (One of the two
linesmen was over to Rowe like a shot to report it). If Rowe had seen it
then Hadden would have taken no further part in the game (Spearing is an
automatic Game penalty) and I wouldn't be surprised if Ayr asked Disciplinary
panel to review it (assuming it was caught on tape he should get a ban).
Also shouldn't Drouin have received an abuse of equipment call on the 4th
Ayr goal for breaking his stick (or was it let off seeing as how only 30-something
seconds remained and you were unlikely to score the 3 goals required to
bring on OT)?

Well a dissapointing night last night, and a few comments:
Killerbus - thanks for your interpretation on two events tonight. It does not surprise me however, that you chose to ignore all of the "penalties" that were committed by Eagles tonight in your posting.
Gage - Without doubt a quality netminder, and I did not see the actual incident, but if Hadden did spear him, then surely he would have been set up by a number of Ayr players immediately, or when he appeared back in the ice.
Seven players on for a face off - quite outstanding this one. A very poor call from the bench, but what were the officials doing? They are not meant to take the face off if a team has either to many, or not enough players on the ice. Hence Adey putting the extra player on for the following face off, to be told that he couldnt!!!!
Mike Rowe - I thought he had a poor game tonight. The penalty he called on the Ayr player for illegal use of equipment at the end of the second was laughable. The guy didnt even have a chance to pick up his helmet before he was sent off. The way he washed out Ayrs "goal" for a man in the crease.... did anyone actualy see anyone in the crease, or do we think he knew he had cocked up by not calling for the penalty on Carlson, as poor Calle was being thumped on the ice in front of the Panthers bench? Inconsistency was his biggest fault tonight. He let to much go and then called innocuos ones.
Panthers Penalty Kill - Very very poor tonight. Whilst some of the calls to get us shorthanded were somewhat harsh, I think we should have dealt better with Ayrs powerplay. We scored 4 goals tonight, and I think that was reallistically all we would get, so had to keep it tight at the back. Sadly we didnt, and the Egg Cup has eluded us again. Twice losing finalists, and twice losing semi-finalists is not a bad run in the four years the trophy has been going though.
Lets hope the team pick themseleves up for the three remaining games (especially in Ayr), look forward to a vicroty in Belfast the night before the final, cos I dont think Belfast are going to bust a gut in that one, and get Maloney back for the run in.

As there have been comments about the Panthers losing the game and Ayr 'outclassing' us on our own ice, can I just make the small point that WE DIDN'T LOSE THE GAME ON SATURDAY. We lost the tie, yes. But if we hadn't been 3-0 down, we wouldn't have pulled the netminder and we probably would have won 4-3 or even 5-3 as they would've pulled theirs. In a way I couldn't help thinking that it was a real shame that this wasn't a league game as the 3-0 deficit took some of the shine off what was a cracking end to end game.
My man Niffty Paek scored too and bagged two assists and the MOM to boot ! He was just great. Ash scored a deceptively fast wrist shot into the extreme top left corner of the net which was a beaut. Baz coming on for a shift solely to spend it telling Wood to pull his head in was hilarious. Danny was his usual stellar self, except for the fact that he was obviously injured. He was taking a long time to get up early on, but the adrenaline seemed to kick in and he got better as the game went on.
What I saw of the Hadden/Gage incident was that Hads seemed to get his stick caught up in Gage after crashing the net and was yanking it angrily to get free. He may well have ended up spearing him in the process, but it didn't look particularly calculated or anything. Gage's sudden recovery the moment Hads was retrospectively put in the bin by the linesman calling it, raised eyebrows all around the stadium. Also a 5 minute major for Tripping is surely nonsense. That's like getting a 5 minute major for Holding.....unless its Holding someone's throat.
Comedy Moment Of The Match: Danny almost playing the puck into his own net. It didn't even look like a dodgy bounce off the boards, so I'm not sure what he was thinking playing it with his stick across the front of his own goal while he was stood on the other side of the post. Oh well, even great netminders have the odd lapse of judgment.

Saturday night was definitely our best performance of
the year, I was so proud of our team and that has been a rare thing these
last two seasons. As for the opposition well even having slept twice since
the game my blood is still around boiling point. The last time I saw a
side so intent on pure cheating and thuggery was the Cardiff side of three
or four years ago, hey wait a minute, weren't they coached by...Heavey!
Says it all I do believe. I don't recall the guy ever completing a game
in Nottingham in his playing days and his coaching follows the same pattern.
And as long as the ISL referees are so incompetent, some teams will continue
to take advantage of that fact and achieve success by methods other than
playing what I would call hockey. But let's end on a positive note, there
have been a lot of very encouraging signs in our last few performances,
dare I say we appear to be running into our best form just in time for
the playoffs. More passionate displays like Saturday night and we will
be certainly be there or thereabouts.

This Hadden/Gage thing.... no idea where people are getting ideas from of Slashing or Spearing.... the call of Tripping seemed accurate from what I saw (but 5 mins???). Did Hadden have his stick caught in the goalie's pads? - to be honest, I doubt it, but it's possible....
The totally farcical element was actually Gage himself. You'd have thought he was at death's door, given his utter immobility when the medics came over to him - then BOING!, he's up again all nice and sprightly, not a twinge or trace of injury to be seen (unlike Danny who was obviously in some serious discomfort all game) - and only a minute or two later pulls off what has to have been the save of the night! (Gage is, after all, in the running for being best goalie in the ISL this year).
Looks to me like six of one & half-a-dozen of the
other.... Hadden was probably (because we can't be 100% sure, can we?)
in the wrong, but Gage almost certainly hammed it up like mad. Hasn't anyone
told him that "The Lord Of The Rings" is going to dominate the Oscars this
year?
