Notes:

Before the game a minute's silence was observed in memory of Vic Batchelder.

31 Danny Lorenz and 33 Mike Torchia started in nets.    The Panthers' starting forward lines were Poirier/Hadden/Wallenberg, Drouin/Jinman/Savoie, Tait/Moria/Nieckar.  The Panthers starting defensive lines were Drolet/Maloney, Evans/Carlsson, Pope/Evans and then rolled that sequence with Evans and Carlsson double shifting to cover the suspended Clayton Norris.

8 Clayton Norris did not play this match as he had been given a 10 game ban for a crosschecking incident against the London Knights which left Trevor Roenick requiring 17 stitches.  The ban was being appealed at the time of the game and under this season's new rules players cannot play while the appeal is being heard.

At 15.58, 5 Patrick Wallenberg collided at speed mid-ice with his team mate 17 P.C. Drouin.  Wallenberg was totally flattened and left the ice hurt.  20 A.J. Kelham covered his next shift while he recovered, but Wallenberg returned to his line shortly afterward.

At 24.35 beleaguered Storm netminder 33 Mike Torchia was pulled.  This was no surprise as Torchia had received 5 shots in the second period and 3 had gone in.  The Panthers' fourth goal was the final straw.  Torchia had his feet set miles apart, didn't have his stick on the ice and was still thinking about getting his knees down as 24 Jimmy Drolet flipped the puck into the net between his skates through a five hole you could have driven a bus through.  Torchia was cheered off the ice by the home crowd, although whether this was due to his inexplicable popularity with Panthers fans from last season or due to the fact he let four goals in remains unclear.  He acknowledged the crowd nonetheless.  30 Stevie Lyle played in nets for the remainder of the game.

At 28.36, a bizarre iciing call was made.  The Storm dumped the puck into the Panthers zone and the Storm's 17 Dwight Parrish went in pursuit.  The puck travelled around the boards and came to Parrish who was in space.  He was somewhat bemused when the whistle was blown as he touched the puck and iciing was given against his team.  He questioned the call, but referee Kirkham ordered a face off in the Storm zone.

At 45.00, 14 Frank Evans was skating backwards to block an attacking player and allow his team mate to touch the puck for iciing.  After the referee had blown up, Evans continued to eyeball the Storm player for a moment, neglecting to notice he was heading for his own crease.  He skated straight backwards into Panthers' netminder 31 Danny Lorenz and both men went flying.

At 51.14, there was a scuffle in the Storm crease as 21 Ashley Tait struck at a loose puck several times to try and get it through netminder 30 Stevie Lyle's skate.  Played stopped, but 44 Justin Hocking took exception to Tait's actions and hit him in the back knocking him down.  44 Barry Nieckar stepped in to tell Hocking in no uncertain terms that he was taking exception to his team mates being hit in the back.  The referees kept both men apart as several others wrestled and somewhere in the middle of it a punch was thrown at Tait presumably by 34 Kayle Short.  Tait tried to get at Short but was grabbed in a headlock by Storm Captain 22 Ivan Matulik who calmly held him until the stripeys had control of the situation.  Nieckar, Tait, Hocking and Short all received 2 minute Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalties.

At 55.35, 25 Russ Romaniuk committed a High Stick on 44 Barry Nieckar.  He then attempted to goad Nieckar into retaliating, but the Panthers' Alternate simply shook his head grinning indicating he wasn't about to fall for that one and Romaniuk went to the penalty box on his own for two minutes.

What a performance. For two periods we just totally overpowered them. 39 shots against 20 says it all and that's with us spending a lot of the 3rd period doing the equivilant in football of arseing about at the corner flag with the ball.

Felt sorry for Torchy. Not sure what was going on with his defence but the third goal (a good low corner shot by Drolet nonetheless) you had to say he didn't get a good look at it and the fourth was abysmal. It wasn't deflected at all. Torchy was stood there with his feet set miles apart, his stick wasn't on the ice and I could see the five hole between his skates big enough to fit a bus through from where I was let alone from where Drolet was. Very soft I thought. Nice that he acknowledged us when we applauded him off the ice, hope no one thought it was the home crowd taking the smeg.

Comedy Moments a plenty: Drouin colliding with Wallenberg mid-ice and flattening him. Evans nonchalently skating backwards into Lorenz and flattening them both. The Storm fans stopping watching the game and turning toward the stage to watch the antics of a Horseman in a Panther suit instead. Romaniuk high sticking Baz near the end and goading him to try and draw a penalty only to have Baz laugh at him as he went to the sin bin on his own.

Wasn't it nice to see Paul Moran get a shift at the start of the 3rd too ? Almost had a breakaway for a moment there which would have been hilarious.

Kirkham was a bit dubious in places. He doesn't appear to understand the meaning of the phrase Holding The Stick. Also was he proposing an exciting new rule when he ordered that Dwight Parrish had touched up for iciing against his own team ? Curious.

Hey guys, a win! I forgot what it was like to see one. It was nice to see us win so comfortably for once last night, I could get used to watching performances like that. Although weren’t Manchester poor? It’s a bit sad that with some of the undoubted quality they have in their team, they couldn’t contribute anything to a very lop-sided game. For 50 minutes they didn’t look bothered and it was only when they were on the verge of being shut-out they started to seem interested. In my opinion they didn’t deserve those two late goals one bit and all it did was distort the final score to making it look a close game, which frankly it wasn’t.

Anyway about us and I thought we played well last night. The powerplay looked a bit better/sharper/faster when we saw it (which wasn’t too much) and players seemed genuinely interested and motivated which is a welcome change.

I also thought that Simon Kirkham had a decent game last night. He missed a hell of a lot of hooking and stick-holding that was going on but it seems all refs are missing/ignoring those calls this season. Anyway, he had a good game.

Torchia was left hung out to dry by that useless team he has the misfortune of playing behind.

3 of those 4 goals he has NO chance with, and the other one might have taken a deflection. The power play goal was a disgrace. 3 storm guys around the panthers guy in the slot, yet the Panther got the shot in without being challenged. Torch had no chance on it. The other two where well screened, and good hard shots. Didn't get a clear view of the other, but maybe it took a bit of a deflection.

As mentioned by someone below - your mascot was a star, and thanks to him for entertaining the Storm fans, cos our team sure wasn't!!!! we appreciate his hard efforts, some storm players could take a tip from him as in how to work hard for their money!

Good result last night - a couple of points that I may/may not get shot down for:

Torchia - sorry, but I didn't think he had a good game at all - neither of those 3 second period goals were good, and the last one deflected off nobody, and was a miss-hit, slow wrist shot ... to his credit on the last goal, he may have been distracted by the abysmal lack of a penalty call by Kirkham as (?) Drouin was having his stick held for so long he had time tu turn to the ref and politely ask him why he wasn't calling the penalty, during which time, his stick was still being held... geez, these refs...

Barry - usually I'll knock Barry, but he put 110% effort in, made a couple of mistakes, but here's my problem ... he DID put that effort in, which made his lack of skill seem that little more obvious - now, I'm not knocking him, I just think we need to decide why he's on the team - an enforcer, yes, to add physicality, yes, for skill, I'm sorry, but no (and this was a game where the skill was the only thing needed to be displayed).

Hadden - again, I'm not Greg's biggest fan usually, but again, he showed that if he can put consistent effort in, he's a stunning player, and he showed that last night ... just keep putting in that effort!!!

Kelham - 3 shifts, stunning on each one - what a waste of talent warming up a bench.

Jinman - the man is a GOD !!!

Lorenz - great game, shame we took the foot off the pedal in the last 5 or 10 mins to deny him the shut-out, but understandable as we had already won the game, and we have a certain game tonight to conserve energy for.

Pope - not his biggest fan either, but played an absolute blinder last night - must have learnt a few poke-check tricks from Nifty!

All in all, we carried on where we left off from the London match, and interestingly (although I must admit I heard this from someone around the rink), when we scored our 4th goal last night, it was our 9th goal in our last 40 minutes of hockey - now you see what effort can do!

Good game last night, ok Storm aren't the hottest team around at the moment but a good performance all the same. Must admit I was impressed with Barry Nieckar's efforts, almost like he had a point to prove to those of us who expressed doubts about his value to the team, well done Baz.

Felt sorry for Torchia being pulled, didn't think he was particularly at fault on the 3 quick goals, the 2 from Drolet being low hard shots through a crowd of players, difficult for a goalie to pick up. Still he got the biggest cheer of all the Storm players as they left the ice, still think he's a top bloke.

Thought everyone played reasonably well last night without anyone being stars, Jimmy Drolet deserved MOM for the 2 goals and plenty of hard work backing up in defence.
