Notes:
1 Mike Pietila and 21 Joe Watkins started in nets. Panthers starting offensive lines were Clarke/Hadden/Elders, Nieckar/Jinman/Cadotte, Wood/Hadden/Purves. Panthers starting defensive lines were Hussey/Charron, Paek/Thompson, Paek/Taubert. The lines then rolled around a lot due to the short bench, the most notable occasional line being Nieckar/Wood/Clarke. Referee Carson was booed by the home crowd on being introduced at the start of the game.
At 0.58, 44 Barry Nieckar squared up to 51 Christian Gosselin. The two talked at close quarters for a while, but no fight occurred. This was to be typical of Gosselin's night at the NIC.
After ten minutes it became apparent that the puck was bouncing weirdly off the boards at the stage left corner of the rink. The puck first came off at an odd angle, then later caught the edge of an ad hoarding and wanged straight back at a player who struck it and then appeared to knock something out of the plexi itself at 13.17.
At 15.00, 49 Jason Clarke and Gosselin squared up and had a bit of argy bargy while play continued. No penalty was called, but at the break in play they were still exchanging words. The following face off was near the Bees bench and Gosselin hit his stick on the side from his seat close to Clarke's back where he was lined up for the drop which caused another confrontation. Referee Carson then had words with the Bees bench.
At 16.17, 72 Lee Jinman was on a breakaway, but Referee Carson stopped play calling Interference on 66 John Purves. The crowd booed very loudly and this was to continue throughout most of the game against various calls Carson made, not all of them on Panthers' players.
At the end of the first period, 10 Brad Peddle sparked a fight when he swung at 66 John Purves. Purves then jumped on him and 72 Lee Jinman leapt in to hold off 3 Mike McBain who was trying to intervene. The players and stripeys ended up in a big knot up against the boards. 15 Briane Thompson was standing nose to nose with Gosselin nearby. It was sorted out eventually and Purves received two minutes for crosschecking.
At 23.30, Peddle decided to start on Clarke behind the play and Clarke obliged by absolutely beating the spit out of the smaller man. The fight resembled Clarke putting one hand on Peddle's head to hold him off and then repeatedly winding up to hit him in the face with the other in a comedy stylee. Both received 5 minutes for Roughing, but Clarke also got 2 minutes for a high stick.
9 David Struch's Illegal Use Of Equipment penalty at 27.12 occurred when his helmet came off, he replaced it before rejoining play, but hadn't done up the chin strap. This decision also appeared to be booed by some of the home crowd who were getting wound up by the continual stoppages in play.
At 32.29, 14 Steve O'Rourke was in a high speed, mid-ice collision with what looked like one of his own players. He dragged himself slowly off the ice as play continued, but immediately went to the dressing room with his shoulder obviously damaged. He didn't reappear for the rest of the game.
At 33.27, 18 Kristian Taubert delivered a terrific check on the boards. The crowd went ape as he was called apparently for a little heard of penalty called Checking In The Head. Taubert complained that his victim had ducked (something all ice hockey players are taught specifically not to do as its dangerous), but he received 2+10 for his trouble.
There was a suspicion that the Bees goal at 38.03 was kicked in. Carson discussed the goal with his linesman and the players at length and the goal stood. Whether the ruling was it had been deflected rather than kicked I'm not sure, but I'm told deflection off the skate is an NHL rule, but still illegal in the ISL. There was also the suggestion that it came off a Panthers' skate, but then there wouldn't have been two assists. I welcome any verification of the rules on this point.
At 42.46, Nieckar went down in the crease after an attack on goal, 2 Mark Matier then landed on top of him, Nieckar took umbrage at this and a scuffle ensued. Nieckar and Matier were stood nose to nose and several players were flying in with stripeys and in the jostling which followed the butt end of Nieckar's stick (which he was holding upright next to him) caught Matier in the mouth, drawing blood. The stripeys broke it up, but then Wood starting rowing with 19 Joe Ciccarello. Wood jabbed at Ciccarello twice incurring a Roughing penalty in the process. Ciccarello was then skating away and Wood crept up behind the refs back, pulled Ciccarello back by his head and pinned him to the ice with one glove face-washing him. Nieckar received 2 minutes for a high stick and Wood got 2+2 for Roughing.
At 50.29, the Bees got their numbers wrong and played with 6 men on the ice for about 15 seconds before the baying crowd finally managed to bring it to Carson's attention. The Bees received a 2 minute bench penalty.
At 59.48, the Panthers called a timeout as they had a face off at the Bees end. The Bees called a timeout at 59.51 after the face off resulted in a messy scramble.

If I was a neutral, I'd say that last night's game was a cracker. But as a Panthers fan, it was utterly frustrating. 55 shots to 32 ! We had 18 shots to their 7 in the third and 7 shots to none in OT. All this dominance must be converted into goals. Too many times I saw Jinman, Cadotte & Elders doing a PC attack trying to dribble through three D-men on their own. This isn't playing as a team.
It should be said that Elders had a great game and was much more a candidate for MOM than Baz. My man of the match was my Niffty Paek. He was godlike out there. Always in the right place, but he covered a heck of a lot of ice. He was diving at the puck, shimmying to get away from attackers, sliding the puck effortlessly to the forwards, the list goes on. Utter class !
Taubert also impressed with some booming great checks against the boards. What the hell is Checking In The Head ??? Does it exist in the rule book ??? I thought he might have had his elbow a bit high, but the guy ducked.
How did no one lamp Gossard though ? To play Devil's Advocate, he knew what he was doing winding up Clarke. Clarke was ignoring the puck when he was riled and that's a real liability. First things first. One such occasion of this allowed Gossard to play a forward in for a shot. The puck virtually went past Clarke's toes unharrassed as he did his WWF evil staring at Gossard. I also thought our goon show had lost the game for us in the third when Baz and Wood left us 5 on 3 down. Baz was unlucky as the butt of his stick was jostled into Matier's face by other players (if anyone gets sticked, how come its always Matier ??? Is there a prize for whoever gets nearest the mole or something ?), but what Wood did was totally unnecessary. By rights if Baz got done for high sticks it should have been 2+2 as Matier's mouth was bleeding, but hey that's Carson for you.
Not sure about Purves. Is it me or does he have the same gravity issues our last Captain had ? Maybe that 'C' is just too damn heavy, but he was sat on the ice a notable number of times unassisted.
We have to play more as a team against the Steelers or they'll cream us. We've got the players I reckon, now its up to you Mr Adey.
Comedy Moment Of The Match: The huge brawl Wood sparked off which happened to coincide with the DJ playing the Benny Hill theme. Hilarious ! I was expecting a gang of large breasted women and a little bald guy to join in and then they could all chase each other round the ice in circles at high speed.

Well, I'm both disappointed and encouraged by the game last night.
Disappointed? - for some reason, it felt that the intensity
of the game vs Blaze wasn't there last night - it wasn't that there was
no effort or no teamwork, it just seemed.... I dunno, a little bit 'less'?
The powerplay needs work (still) although it's way better than last season.
And although we have got five VERY skilled D-men (when the ref actually
lets us have any on the ice, that is!) they don't yet seem to be working
as a complete unit yet.
That was only the third game for the team (or the second
game for Hussey, Charron & Purves), going up against a team on their
sixth game.
I thought the Bees looked like a solid unit with FAR
more physicality than I've seen in them before - inluding their fair share
of goonery - Peddle, Matier & 'Gossard' (as Kendra hilariously named
him cos he's a big t*t) being the main culprits. Watkins was awesome (gggrrrr!)
- Oi Joe, save it for the GB games will ya? - fully deserved MoM, he was
outstanding. How many whisker-thin almost-goals did we have? - if Watkins
hadn't been at his 100%, we'd all be very happy little Panthers right now....
Encouraged? - despite the aforementioned slight lack of
intensity, I thought that there was plenty of effort and a fair amount
of teamwork out there. The special teams were IMHO better than last season
(but still need work), and there was no shortage of offensive desire -
WITH team-mates backing up the point man. And screening the goalie - ye
gods, how much were we screaming for that before?
Lots of goal-scoring CHANCES, we just didn't seem to
be able to put them away. Partly Watkins for sure, but....
Since Iceweb seems to be playing a mardy, I've no idea
what the SOG were - but I'll bet we heavily out-shot them (especially in
the 3rd period), which shows a desire to shoot, if nothing else. That bloody
ironwork - how many times did it 'ring' for us?
Carson? - what a sodding disgrace. I just CANNOT believe
that he gives Nieckar a 2min, Wood a 2+2, and NOTHING for the Bees? - Matier
having a go at Nieckar while Baz is on the ice? And wasn't it Matier 3rd
man in on Wood? Was there any period of more than a few minutes during
that game of 5-on-5?
As for the 2+10 vs Taubert for "checking to the head"
- cobblers, utter cobblers (even the Bees fans thought so) - the Bracknell
player ducked, as Taubert tried to point out to Andy Pandy. Gorgeous AND
LEGAL hit - more, please!
The point where the puck got lodged in the (out)side
of our net from a Bees shot, it should have been a face-off in centre ice,
no? So why did Carson face-off nearest our goal then? - someone told me
he heard Carson saying the it was IN Pietila's glove, then 'dropped' into
the net! Yeah, right....
Comedy Moment Of The Match - Enio Sacilotto doing his
"Muppet On Bad Acid" routine on the Bees bench at least twice - hey Enio,
take a chill pill, OK? - you're going bald and there's nothing you can
do about it, so just accept it, hmmm?

So, we have 55 shots on goal & only get 3 past Watkins!!!
Arrrghhh!! Very Frustrating!!! Amount of great & clear goalscoring
chances we had, we should have won that easily. Too many times did the
final pass just not be sent fast enough or not accurate enough & of
course on the PP we were looking for the 'perfect' shot instead of taking
a good chance, who knows what it mught have rebounded off! Early days still,
but seeing how well steelers are going, really makes me concerned about
next sat'.......
Question of the day for me (as i sit in block 4), what
the heck was Jason Clarke saying to Gosselin?? ;-O
Anyone in block 15 care to enlighten us all??

Just like to say how much I enjoyed the game last night - real good fun. Disappointing that we didn't win outright, but Bracknell proved that they were no slouches. Funniest bit was the running battle between Jason Clarke (is he right in the head??!!) and Bracknell's Gosselin, also Clarke's continued (successful) attempts to wind up Bracknell's coach.
Not sure how Nieckar got Man of the Match, but well done
Baz. My vote would have gone to Cadotte, Hadden or Wood, who were all brilliant.
Thought Purves looked a bit slow though ....
