Notes:

31 Danny Lorenz and 31 Joaquin Gage started in nets.  The Panthers starting forward lines were Hadden/Poirier/Savoie, Tait/Drouin/Moria, Jinman/Nieckar/Wallenberg.  The Panthers starting defensive lines were Drolet/Maloney, Pope/Carlsson, Evans/Norris.

A minute's silence was observed before the game to pay respect to those who were killed in the terrorist attack on the United States the previous Tuesday.  The Star Spangled Banner was also played as players faced the twin flags of the UK and the USA which were hung at one end of the arena. All players wore black arm bands.

Confusion reigned at 38.02 as PC Drouin was given a Slashing penalty.  Before the ensuing face off, the Eagles were penalised for Delay Of Game due to a late line change.  These penalties appeared to be run on the scoreboard as coincidental penalties although this was not the case.

At 38.20, the confusion was compounded when the puck flew over the plexi and 30 Dino Bauba, who was already in the sin bin for an earlier Hooking penalty, jumped up from his seat and hit the puck to stop it flying into the crowd.  He was then given an Interference penalty for this action, much to his annoyance and the crowd’s disbelief.  Referee Carson attempted to restart play, but was stopped by 5 Alan Schuler who pointed out the Eagles had three men in the bin but only the 2.06 for Bauba showing on the scoreboard.  Much discussion at the referees crease ensued and after much deliberation the scoreboard was amended to show Bauba only with 0.06 to go on his penalty and the 2 minute bench minor timed from 38.20.  The scoreboard should have shown the bench minor and Drouin's penalties at 1.42 and Bauba on 2.06.  As it was, Bauba left the sin bin 2 minutes early and the Panthers seemingly had almost two minutes of powerplay wiped out.  This decision prompted chants of 'If you all hate Carson clap your hands' and 'We want a ref !'.

The players and fans alike were further riled by the fact that the game was being littered with erratic offside calls or non-calls on both sides.

The Panthers goal at 47.30 was scored on a delayed penalty with their netminder pulled.  After the goal was scored 19 Mike Harding went for Referee Carson and had to be restrained by the two linesman.  This earned him a 10 minute Misconduct penalty.

3 Ryan Risidore's Tripping penalty at 53.18 was due to a tangle with 44 Barry Nieckar in which Risidore's stick hooked Nieckar's leg at the knee and pulled him over.  Risidore took offence at being penalised for this and squared up to Nieckar.  The two men eyeballed each other over the intervening stripeys, but Risidore's threats were somewhat deflated when, neglecting to look where he was skating, he managed to collide with his own bench and fell over backwards causing much hilarity.

At 59.09, the Panthers called a time out and pulled their netminder.

Well, some interesting comments re last night.....
Carson was what we come to expect, BUT he made some bizare calls for BOTH sides, our PP was poor & our Defence left Courtenay & others in WAY TOO MUCH SPACE, at the old place you could get away with it at times smaller cos of the smaller ice surface, but not anymore!! Ayr did what we should have done by completely closing down on our best players, all credit to them, Ayr deserved the win, we were out-played & at times out-coached, but it's early days yet so no need to panic........

Although I agree with all the recent postings regarding Carson's usual bewildering display, I actually thought that the Panthers's display was pretty poor and lacklustre. The powerplay seems to have reverted back to it's powder puff self, with no man parked in front, like most teams employ. Liked the comment about Ayr's size. Our smaller players certainly
had difficulty getting past Hilstrom/Risadore/etc. I think that the better team won, Ayr kept things simple, tight and waited for chances to come along, and with Mr.Courtenay around, they must be kept to an absolute minimum. We can blame the officials if we like, but in my humble opinion, I am yet to convinced about 2 or 3 new players, with regards to being up to ISL standard.

I thought both teams played really well last night and thought the standard of hockey was great, BUT Carson was totally crap, I have never seen so much rubbish coming from 3 officials in one game, something needs to be done about the standard of referees in this league. I think that everyone who agrees should email ISL on monday to get something done about it. Bauba, who got 2 min interference whilst already in the box was so unfair, I sit right next to the box and the puck was already out of play and over the plexi, Bauba just stopped it from hitting someone in our block which was a decent thing to do, Carsons call then was so unnecessary.  Please people lets get something done about the refs.

We take our seats and we have to watch the bloody Andy Carson Road Show again. The two 5 - 3 powerplays he awarded to Ayr where shocking. They would have been doubtfull calls when even handed, let alone a man down. As Jono says, it is not just us he made bad calls against, Panthers fans booing him when he cocks up with an Ayr penalty puts his performance into perspective. I think he deliberately delayed his exit from the ice to ensure most people had left, so he didnt get booed as much.

Firstly, the teams...
I honestly thought the Panthers played reasonably well overall, but not as good as the previous two games - good passing, but bad receiving - the positioning of receiving players MUST get better! Welcome back to scoring, PC! - was that "Drouin Special" a joy to watch or what?? Hadden doing great work, nice tip-in. Is Brent Pope showing as a ruddy good D-man or what? Calle was doing great work, but never seemed to be in the right place to let a shot off... :-(((

The Eagles - bl**dy hell, they've got some big lads! And they used it as well - too much physical stuff for my liking - you know, the 'borderline' stuff that refs tend to ignore. The Panthers game this year is obviously based on speed and a free-flowing game... both Belfast and Ayr have recognised this & are using stifling tactics to shut our lads down. Their first goal was a corker, though, wasn't it?

But.... How To Spoil A Hockey Game?? - Have ALL THREE stripeys as total incompetents!!
AGAIN the linesmen were missing blatant offsides and whistling borderline (or onside rushes) - for BOTH teams... but it worked to Ayr's advantage because their 4th goal was sodding offside!! Anyone else see Lorenz going ape to Carson about this?
AGAIN all three stripeys were getting in the way of the puck and the players - not as bad as Rowe last week, but still worse than last season already!
AGAIN Carson was the biggest t**t on the ice! How many Slashing calls vs us that he pulled out of nowhere? Why was Bauba let out of the box too early? On the other side, what was that Ayr Delay Of Game penalty for?? And if he was going to call blatant pens like Maloney's elbowing, then why not the OTHER side's blatant ones? - like Ayr's #11 cross-checking Drolet in the back while he's still down on the ice?
Their #19 had to be held back at one point from going over & pulverising Carson - should have let him get on with it....

Summary Of The 2001-02 Season So Far:
Teams Better, Officials Worse....

Another typical performance from Carson spoiling what looked to be a good game after the opening period with a succession of penalties that totally disrupted the flow of the game, even though it didn't appear an over physical or chippy sort of game. Having said that the game seemed to turn when Nieckar stupidly threw his punch in the third, just when we had managed to get some momentum back. I'm surprised Adey didn't bench him.
Finally, tonight was my first league game of the season, what is that music the players come out to? I didn't think it could get much worse than last years intro but they've managed it somehow. It sounds like some dodgy American TV theme tune.

F**k me, Andy f*****g Carson you are such a c**t. What could have been a really top class game of hockey between two good sides was spoiled totally by that t**t in black & white stripes.
We paid the price for not converting our several PP chances, but when I go to a hockey game I pay to see the action, not the ref. How many times in living memory has the crowd chanted 'We want a ref' when the penalty is in our favour (Dino Bauba incident near end of 2nd).
A bad night all round. When oh when are we going to get decent referees in this league.

Gutted I couldn't make it tonight, but now I'm not so sure it was that bad a thing! Even the official iceweb report basically admits that Carson was crap. I await reports eagerly, though I guess you're probably all drowning your sorrows somewhere at the moment!
