* Did Not Dress

Notes:

1 Eoin McInerney and 31 Danny Lorenz played in nets.  61 Christian Sjogren did not play this game as he was serving a two game ban for an accidental high stick offence which caused injury in a previous game against the Ayr Scottish Eagles.  20 Alan Levers dressed as back up N/M due to 35 Pasi Hakkinen being injured.  9 Steve Duncombe and 25 Keith Leyland dressed for the Steelers but did not play.

This game was played on 44 Barry Nieckar's birthday.

At 28.56, confusion reigned as a penalty was called on 24 Chris Lipsett for deliberately jabbing 4 Brent Pope in the chest with the tip of his stick blade as Pope was leaving the ice in a line change.  Lipsett who was fetched from the bench to serve the penalty seemed to argue that referee Kirkham had got the wrong player.  The announcer then amended the penalty as being on 27 Marc Laniel.  A few moments later as the players stood around shrugging at each other the announcer amended the penalty again as being on Lipsett once more and he was put in the sin bin.

32 Brad Lauer's Unsportsmanlike Conduct resulted due to him shouting at referee Kirkham from the bench.

The Steelers powerplay goal at 55.20 was ruled to have been scored in the second two minute penalty period which was given when 24 Jimmy Drolet committed an accidental high stick which gave 32 Brad Lauer a nosebleed.  There was some discussion as to whether the two minutes of powerplay still on the clock should stand or whether the goal was scored during the second penalty period in which case the powerplay would end.  Referee Kirkham decided the latter, presumably as 2.00 marks the start of any powerplay.

With roughly a minute to go, the Steelers pulled their netminder.

That was an incredibly poor & dull game but 2 points is 2 points so we can't complain about that.
Steelers were there for the taking but we just didn't come out of the blocks.
I thought Mo really deserved his MOM as he was excellent tonight, he gave a performance that belied his years.
One final note, I'm the first person to slag off the refs when they have a crap game, so in order redress the balance somewhat I have to say that I thought Simon Kirkham was excellent tonight. I don't think I disagreed with any penalty he gave and he let the game flow. Well done that stripey.

PS We did beat the strongest team in the league as they are holding the rest up :o)

Blimey did we make hard work of that or what???
We looked like the team that played last night, no 'jump' in the Panthers legs tonight, and Danny to thank (yet again) for a remarkable save or 3 when the 'D' went a wandering! 2 assists to Barry! There you go, proves he can play the game as well as knock heads!

I will give Sheffield their dues though, they put up a great fight considering how decimated they were (and this time they really were). Scott Allison must have logged 40 minutes last night and as for Rocket Ron, he played much better than I expected.

As for us, well the words 'ordinary' and 'predictable' spring to mind. If anything is obvious to me after last night it's that Sheffield were giving it everything and we weren't taking it seriously which is a shame. Well done Mo though, I think he's improving with every game.

Good game, and like you said two points for you is two points for you. Although if I was a panther I think I'd be worrying right about now. Steelers arrived with a severely weakened squad (We brought 7 players who as far as I'm aware were fully fit, Eoin was rumoured to have broken a finger in training in the last week, Brown took a stick to the face in training too, Leboutillier is probably still recovering from his broken foot, Bobyck has a back injury and from what Simmsy said Bach and Benazic were stopped from playing by the physio, along with 2 youngsters who didn't get a shift and Shudra - a player who has played just 1 game at this level in the last 2 years.)

Despite this we obviously came with a plan to shut the game down, build a wall on the blue line and keep it close and despite the lack of bodies we stuck to it and Panthers seemed to be getting frustrated as the game went on - this becoming more apparent just before the goal. In the end we had a couple of good chances and could have taken the points away (Bobyck missing a sitter and Danny making a stick save when he had been stranded in no-mans land). Also I thought the only reason you got those goals was because we made two mistakes and coughed up the puck - only to be expected with the lack of bodies and the fact that you were 'fresh' and we had played the night before.

Kirkham in the main had a fairly good game, apart from absolutely cocking up one call (the its 24, no its 27, no its 24) and missing some blatant holding by Evans, at least one cross check by Drouin and I believe he should thrown Tait in at the same time as Kruse. As for Drolet taking 2+2 for high sticks, if he does get a ban then it would be deserved (unless you're trying to tell me that Kirkham is now responsible for what Drolet does with the sticks in his hands), but I'm sure Kirkham missed as many Steelers calls as he did Panthers and that no matter what happens to Drolet some one will complain that the Panthers have been hard done to ;)

Well done to the officials tonight. Especially the quick-thinking clock operator when Steelers scored the PP goal tonight..mmmm :-P

Simon Kirkham take a stand. Well done tonight for officiating the game in the correct spirit although I can't help feeling that if Sheffield had squeaked an equaliser, the usual suspects on here would still moan about the refs performance.

Christ, didn't we make it difficult beating the 11 fit outskaters for Sheffield tonight? To say we had FIVE extra men out on the ice I thought we were bloody poor to be honest with you. The first two periods were absolutely crap and we should have been murdering them in all honesty.

I have to say, that 1st period was the dullest I think that I've ever seen, and to be honest I thought that both teams looked poor overall. But as Jono says - 2 points is 2 points!
At least the Panthers seemed to wake up a bit more than Sheffield did.... Those PPs were a bit ropey though - enormous amounts of passing, but where were the shots? (and can they PLEASE get someone parked in front of the crease to screen the goalie?).

I know I am late with this but I don't care cause MY STEVIE SCORED!!!  So to all you people who have called him too old, wanted him gassed etc tough t***ies, my boy did us proud proving experience and skill counts the most. Even I a Moria fan was totally impressed how he got away from the Steeler trying his best to hold him back with his stick- pure class. He deserved his MOTM award (not that I'm biased).

God, calm down Patch ! Yes, I said Mighty Mo was playing really well in the first period too and I told Ginger he was gonna score before the game was ended. I'm not a great fan of Moria I admit, but I could see last night he was really throwing himself in there. It was very tenacious the way he broke away from the blatant hook a Steeler did on him (which Kirkham called immediately) to still get down the ice and score on the delayed pen. Can't really blame the Steeler for trying to haul him down though as sometimes you have to take those kind of penalties to stop someone going one on one with your netminder. PC did a similar Holding penalty later on.

Also I was very impressed with the way Baz totally unselfishly (and on his birthday too) turned down the opportunity to shoot from point blank to set up Savoie with an absolute gift wrapped sitter behind the goalie into an empty net. Well done, Baz. That won us the game. Also amused by the way he went over to the away block to applaud them for their support before going to anyone else after the MOM awards :-)
