Notes:
1 Mika Pietila and 35 David Trofimenkoff started in nets. The Panthers' starting lines were Cadotte/Jinman/Nieckar, Elders/Hadden/Clarke, Wood/Purves/Nieckar. The Panthers' starting defensive lines were Charron/Hussey, Paek/Thompson, Paek/Taubert. Captain John Purves played in his more usual number of 34 as his previous number of 66 had just been a stop gap until his new shirt was made up.
At 13.55, Jinman was caught in possession on the red line and 25 Rich Bronilla went on a breakaway. He went down in the crease after taking his shot under a challenge from 15 Briane Thompson, the net came off its moorings as he piled into netminder 1 Mika Pietila and the puck was put in the wayward net. Referee Kirkham ruled no goal immediately, but adjudged Bronilla had been hauled down and awarded a penalty shot. 6 Kim Ahlroos took the shot and scored.
11 Greg Hadden's Misconduct penalty at 16.32 resulted after he argued an offside call.
11 Nathan Leslie's 2+10 penalty for Checking From Behind at 29.57 was levied after he boarded 27 Mark Cadotte face first into the plexi. No injury resulted.
At 31.48, 49 Jason Clarke was checked in the back by 20 Chris Slater. Clarke gave Slater a look, but then 13 Dody Wood gave Slater a clip in the back of the head with his elbow as he passed. Wood received 2 minutes for Roughing.
17 Mark Kolesar was called for High Sticks at 42.57 after he caught 17 Jason Elders in the face mid-ice as Elders was breaking away.
At 59.15, the Knights finally pulled their netminder after much screaming from the bench.
At 59.51, 1 Mika Pietila threw his stick down in disgust as Kirkham whistled the play dead even though the netminder had dropped the puck out to the corner immediately after saving it with his glove.
At the end of the game the clock stopped bizarrely showing 0.2. Everyone looked at the timekeeper for a few seconds and then he fiddled with something to make it go again and the final hooter sounded.

I'm not sure what to say really. We had moments of utter brilliance interspersed with utter garbage where we couldn't string two passes together and that isn't a turn of phrase; its literal. I know because I was counting. The first ten minutes was abysmal. We couldn't even get into their zone on the powerplay. Then we woke up a bit, then went to sleep again. We have got to play better than this on Saturday or we'll be staring down the wrong end of a three goal lead.
Our defence looked OK going backwards, but forwards ? Niffty Paek appeared to be the only one who could pass the puck out of defence without giving it to the opposition and even he managed that on the blue line once.
Dody needs to do the simple stuff right before he starts getting fancy. You either pass the puck to Hadden unmarked on the back post or you score yourself. You don't shoot and miss in that situation. It ain't the done thing.
However, I don't want to be totally negative as at the end of the day we did win. Mainly 'cos London were playing like we were, but credit where its due. Purves showed some of the reason why we signed him. Very nice hands that guy. The puck was his and no one was taking it off him when he got it. Baz had a good game and HOW THE HELL DID HE DO THAT ??? He sort of lobbed Trofinamess from the blue line off the crossbar. Trof should have been in the way, but somehow impersonated a sieve. Pietila was smooth again, but seemed to end up scrambling a lot. Paek was awesome again and I think he doesn't get the MOM any more 'cos they got bored of giving it him all last season. He was double shifting again and if he gets injured, we will be in such huge trouble. Paul Moran got four or so shifts in the 1st when Hads was in the bin for verbals with Kirkham. I also saw a Knight seem to get checked backwards before Taubert actually reached him. The guy simply thought 'I'll save him the bother as it'll hurt me less'.
BTW, what exactly is the rule on when the referee blows up for the goalie having the puck ? I thought it was three seconds or is it closing your glove on it ? Pietila went ape at Kirkham and he did seem to be dropping it immediately to run the clock out when the whistle went.
Comedy Moment Of The Match: The spirit of the LPS lives on. Why did our clock stop on 0.2 ??? The game ended, all the players looked up, frowned, looked at the timekeeper who started fiddling with switches and things, then the clock finally ran out properly and the hooter went. I was waiting for the confetti to rain down for a moment.

SHOCK HORROR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Panthers prove they can grind out a win when needed!!!!!!! Were we under orders to keep things quiet tonight or what. The Brawl on skates that wears #49 was silent!! A poor performance overall but hey ......... how many times did we play the opposition off the ice last year & come away with nothing!! So its on to the Sheffield Library on Saturday. Interesting to see Blazer amoungst us tonight. If he prepares for the team that played tonight then we could do well. A well done to Paul Moran who while still along way from ISL standard looks to have come on massively thanks to his BNL experience. BRING ON THE STEELERS!!! See you all in the mask on Saturday!!! Well, I'm happy (although not 100%).
The first period I thought the Panthers were quite lacklustre
- London were playing as a team much better - due to the extra ice time
from that pre-season tourno?
The second was better, although still below par - the
third was much improved.
Overall, I still think we have the superior skills package
- it's just they haven't yet gelled as a team. There were flashes of it
all game, some beautiful moves- but also some total howlers. On the teamwork
front, London definitely showed us up.
Isn't Trofimenkoff a damn sight better than he used to be? Time was, even that kind of game would have put 5 or more goals past him - not now. (The winning goal being the exception to the rule - I think he was the second most surprised person in the NIC - the first being Baz himself!).
The powerplay? Still not too good (although 2 of our goals came on the PP, so they are doing something right!) - I do think London's PK was excellent, very aggressive forechecking. As much as I loathe Vesio "Lawn Ornament" Sacratini, he IS a very skilled player, and put up a MoM-worthy performance tonight IMHO. McIntyre too. Nate Leslie should stop being a daddy's boy and learn to play the game ("look at me Dad!, I can skate, Dad! I can fight, Da- urgh!" ;-)). His comical "I didn't do anything " over his 2+10 for trying to shove Cadotte's face through the boards had me in stitches.
Ugh, the passing.... not good. Too many long passes to players that were tightly marked, too many gifts... our lot's comparison of 'pass-counts' (a la Texpef)between Knights & Panthers did NOT come out in our favour. On the good side, the the rest of the puck-handling I thought was quite admirable - Purves especially is becoming almost Paek-like in his ability to keep the puck regardless of who is doing what to him.
Barry's goal - luvverley! Just backhands it from the blueline towards the net, and Trof just totally misses it! The surprised and overjoyed look on Bazza's physog was a joy to see.... certainly added a bit of energy to the rest of the game. And no PIMs for him tonight either - no doubt his detractors will dismiss it utterly... Wonder what Blaisdell thought, since he was in the NIC watching the game (as was Calle Carlsson)?
MoM for Cadotte? - fair enough - good moves, lots of speed, and a few gorgeous full-force body-checks - nice one Mark! Other candidates IMHO were Hussey, Purves, Paek, Pietila, and Taubert (if only for him managing to knock a couple of Knights players off-balance just by skating towards them! - can't blame them, though - he is MASSIVE!)
Muppet Of The Match, sadly, has to go to Dody Wood - trying to be a one-man band, too many fancy moves (that didn't work) and a couple of right silly penalties. Oh dear.... it's a TEAM game Dody!
Comedy Moment Of The Match? - Trofimenkoff forgetting to switch on his hearing aid and completely missing Bob Leslie & half the Knights bench yelling at him to come off for the extra skater near the end - took one of the visitors nearly breaking his stick on the boards to wake him up! ;-)
It's 2 valuable CC points, and a nearly-certain ticket to the CC semis (1 more point will seal it), but they are going to have to tighten it up for Saturday....

not a great performance tonight, very dis-jointed scrappy play in the 1st, improved a bit in the 2nd & improved a bit more in the 3rd, did enough to win which is fine by me!!

Cracking result tonight, and another game which showed
what an awesome defence and netminder we have.
I thought the first period was dull, but the game certainly
livened up in the second and third.
Although Cadotte had a good game, I wouldn't have given
him man of the match, I thought Neickar, Paek and Hadden were all outstanding
tonight and if either of them had got MOTM you would have heard no complaints
from me.
As for Baz's winner, sublime and ridiculous, but it's
one that will live in the memory for a long time.
Finally I word for the referee, I have been a harsh critic
of ref's (much to my cost!), but I thought Simon Kirkham was excellent
tonight, he let the game flow, and only stuck his arm up when necessary.
If all referee's could perform like that every game I'd have nothing to
moan about!

one point trofinuff is not a great netminder he gave up far to many rebounds to be that, however unlike the week before the team decided that they didnt want to score from rebounds and did not put a man in the slot anywhere near as much as they did in the 2 previous games!! big mistake, both us and london imho were very poor with little flow to either team both giving the puck away far to easily to be a sustained force however we got the breaks on the night and grabbed the 2 points i cant say we stole them as like i said i thought london were as poor as us at times! ok wont go into those i thought were weak but players that excelled, well hold the frontpage, Nieckar wot a player last night he played to the very top of his game and worked hard all night, i do not expect any more of him than that (as everyone knows his limitations), thought JP was amazing and when this guy has a bad game we are going to get slaughtered unless the other D can start to get it together.

Just found this in the ISL Match Report at www.iceweb.co.uk:
"But Nottingham equalised at the death of the session
when Cadotte on a powerplay hit the puck from
behind the net and a Knights defenceman kindly kicked
it home."
I thought one of our guys converted it from in front of
the net after Trofinell was caught out of his net. Did anyone else see
it ?

Yes our first goal was definitely an 'own goal' off their
number 20 Chris Slater, although I thought it was off the stick. Agree
with most other people about it being an inconsistent performance, the
play leading up to Knights second goal was truly appalling. However let's
look for positives and I think that when a team can play an indifferent
game and still grind out a win then we have good things to look forward
to when they starting hitting form.
