Notes:

31 Danny Lorenz and 1 Mike Bales started in nets.  The Panthers starting forward lines were Tait/Weber/Nieckar, Savoie/Jinman/Drouin, Poirier/Moria/Wallenberg.  The Panthers starting defensive lines were Evans/Norris, Carlsson/Pope, Maloney/Drolet.  11 Greg Hadden missed the game due to flu and 16 Claude Savoie started the game, but sporadically went missing with 5 Patrick Wallenberg covering his shifts and then vanished altogether by the 30 minute mark.  The lines were reshuffled as Kelham/Weber/Nieckar, Poirier/Moria/Wallenberg, Drouin/Jinman/Tait.

At 7.19 there was penalty confusion as Rowe called Hooking when the Panthers touched the puck.  He made the signal, skated off to set up the face off and looked back to discover both penalty boxes open with their respective minders shrugging at him while various players milled around trying to work out who the penalised person was.  The crowd gave a slow hand clap and Rowe finally gave 27 Paxton Schulte two minutes for Hooking despite having stopped the play when the Panthers touched up.

At 37.19 a punch up broke out on the boards between 8 Clayton Norris and 27 Paxton Schulte after they had held each other on the plexi.  It went on for some time with Norris getting the better of the shots in.  Schulte doubled up a couple of times as he skated off and both men left the ice to get their shirts repaired.  Both received 2+2 for Roughing which left everyone wondering what the 5 minute Fighting penalty is for exactly.  Some speculated that a Fighting penalty might have made Schulte fall foul of the automatic £250 fine and game ban as he was already at his ISL limit.  Others wondered if the fight was a tactic to get Schulte suspended for the Panthers return match in Belfast the following Wednesday.  The penalties were sat out by 18 A.J. Kelham and 11 Colin Ward.

At 39.40, netminder 31 Danny Lorenz was tackled while in possession of the puck behind his own net.  There followed a mad scramble as the Giants tried to find the empty net and the Panthers threw themselves at the crease while Lorenz lay sprawled in no-mans-land.  The defence won out and cleared the puck.

At the end of the second period, 19 Jeff Hoad slashed 32 Joel Poirier across the back of the legs from behind as he skated away, the end buzzer went and Poirier turned to see who had done it and found 23 Chad Allan had stepped between them.  Allan and Poirier had a bit of a scuffle, but others intervened to stop the fight.  No penalties were given.

35 Pasi Hakkinen replaced 31 Danny Lorenz in the Panthers net for the third period.

At 40.20 linesman Pirry was hit in the centre of his back by a Belfast clearance.  Play was stopped as he yelped and fell flat on his face.  After treatment and no small amount of writhing in pain, Pirry was able to get back up and continue the game.  The crowd applauded him.  The clock was left to run after the stoppage and it took about thirty seconds for it to be stopped for some reason.  The time wasn't put back on.

At 54.23, as the puck was trapped on the boards and in a knot of players, 2 Terran Sandwith took it upon himself to punch 17 P.C. Drouin in the back of the head.  Drouin turned away and did not retaliate, but 8 Clayton Norris waded in to defend him.  Other Giants and Panthers joined the scuffle, but Norris got hold of his man, pushed Sandwith backward out of the melee and then proceeded to beat seven shades out of him.  Both men received 5+Game for Fighting which confused everyone again as the fight was more than equal to the earlier dust up with Schulte.  Sandwith also received 2+2 for his attack on Drouin and Drouin received 2 minutes apparently for being hit in the head.

The Panthers' Delay Of Game penalty at 59.00 resulted when the Panthers made a series of late line changes before a face off.  This was possibly due to the fact that the lines were such a jumble by this time what with Hadden's absence, Savoie's departure and Kelham's introduction that no one was sure who went with who.  The same thing happened at the next face off as well with Rowe calling it immediately this time.  Panthers' coach Paul Adey told Rowe what he thought of the decision and received a Game Misconduct for his trouble.  The Panthers called a time out after this and Adey got another ticking off for talking to his players in the time out as he was supposed to have left the bench.  The Delay Of Game penalties were sat out by 44 Barry Nieckar and 72 Lee Jinman.

Hi all, well guys its been sometime since I saw a game at the NIC for one reason or another up to Saturday night & I remember why after that performance. How long does the disorganisation of our bench need to go on?? A powerplay without the man advantage on the ice, 2 calls of delay when at 6-1 it really didnt matter about any "points" being made. Either employ Paul Adey as a forward or wave good bye to him & Dampier, unless of course the Panthers are happy with mid-table finishes each year.

If we play in the same manner on Wednesday then it's time for another hefty trouncing. Last night there was no heart, soul, effort or anything like that, it was pitiful to watch. I was so disgusted that I left five minutes before the game ended, I wasn't going to dwell on the game whilst being stuck in a huge traffic jam so I got the hell out of the Arena. It was disgusting that even in the third when Belfast weren't even trying, we looked as flat as a pancake. Where was the drive, it was a top of the table clash for gods sake and we capitulate?! Pathetic, I hope there's a marked improvement soon or else i'll find entertainment elsewhere where the chances of victory are better. As for Savoie, I hope the vandals took him too, he won't be missed for one second @ this club.

I thought Tait should have got MOM, I thought he was one of the few who didn't make any mistakes and didn't let himself get pushed around.  Clayton was doing his job on sandwith, PC and him had a little scuffle which was nothing to write home about and definately not started by PC (it happened right in front of me) and PC turned to skate away and Sandwith pushed or hit him on the back of his head or upper back so clayton flew in on him.

Last night was not acceptable. It was both appalling and embarrasing. That has to be the worst performance I think I've ever seen from any Panthers side, it really was that bad. I totally accept we were beaten by the better side, and Belfast were excellent, but we didn't even try to compete with them.
I have a few thoughts on the game itself. Firstly Paul Adey, why test the referees patcience like that? It was preety obvious what would happen and I think Rowe was quite right to give those two delay of game penalties.  Savoie missing for the third period, hopefully he was on a plane back home! I watched him closely last night and for me he just could not give a toss.  The only plus for me was the performance of Poirier who never gave up.  One thing I really didn't understand last night. People were still standing and cheering the team off like they were heroes. Why? How could you applaud a performance like that?

Our performance last night was quite frankly unacceptable, we couldn't string three passes together, our Defence let our n/m's face 46 shots, we couldn't clear our zone, forwards weren't interested and didn't backcheck all nite etc. I could go on but i'd be writing all day, we really were crap. If I see our players proud to wear the Black and Gold like Moran was carping on about prior to the game then I don't mind a defeat, but many players last night simply didn't care and that's what hacks me off.

I’ve got to say that last nights performance was complete and utter dross. Our biggest game of the season so far and we turn up for ten flaming minutes at the start of the first period, not good enough at all IMHO. If we’d lost but at the same time gone down fighting I could have accepted that, but to go down the way we did last night leaves a bitter taste in my mouth, we just laid down and let Belfast skate all over us, it was pathetic. I couldn’t believe how flat the players were and it wasn’t as if we’d even had a game the previous night. The team have had since Wednesday morning to prepare for a huge game and then we see a performance like that, it just doesn’t figure.

I had heard that the players’ locker room was broken into during the game and a few things had been stolen but the clubs insurance would cover that I’m sure. I personally don’t think that that’s an excuse because the players are professionals and should have carried on regardless and if anything, would have got my back up and made me play a lot harder than usual. That seemed to be the case with Clayton Norris who was one of the very few who emerged from the game with any kind of credit.

I also thought Adey acted stupidly last night and was responsible for Belfast’s seventh goal. It was clear that Mike Rowe (who had a decent game) wasn’t going to let him change his players for the upcoming draw (he even shouted at Adey that he couldn’t) and then Adey overrules the referee and sends out his replacements so he was asking for trouble as far as I’m concerned. I wish he backs down his stance of criticising refs because we won’t win anything with his attitude.

You also have to question the role of Nieckar last night. Apparently one of his ‘roles’ is chief motivator on the team; well his motivational skills were sadly lacking last night. I think the only thing he did of any note last night was try and start a fight when Norris was pummelling Paxo Shulte, probably thinks Norris’ starting to steal his thunder at the club. I know which one of them I’d employ if I had a choice as to which to have next season.

You had to feel sorry for Danny Lorenz AGAIN as his D-men once more did him absolutely no favours. They left him out to dry for the fourth or fifth time this season and he must be getting fed up playing behind some of the D in front of him. IMHO its unforgivable that Danny has to face 35 shots in the first two periods. No wonder Hakkinen iced in the third, Lorenz must have been knackered.
How many times did Drolet and Pope give up the puck, way too many for my liking and that old chestnut of not being able to clear the zone sprung up again. Sometimes it seems easier to get the puck out of our own zone than keep it in, strange.

Wonder what Mick Holland will make of it? Bad luck, Hadden missing or the forward lines being slightly re-adjusted? Nah, a shocking performance and if he writes anything else he’ll be lying. My man-of-the-match, Carlsson

What the Giants faced last night was not the Nottingham Panthers Ice-Hockey TEAM, but a bunch of individual ice-hockey players wearing Panthers shirts. I think a few, a VERY few players had reasonably good games (Poirier, Jinman, Moria, Maloney) - but they couldn't really do anything without the support of the TEAM.  The 5-5 draw against Bracknell got us a point because, while the defence had the night off, the forwards did their job properly and scored 5 goals. Last night, NO portion of the team did their job properly - and that's why Belfast walked all over us.  And to think we got so excited right near the beginning with Calle Carlsson's wonderful slapshot goal!

Couple of questions for those who probably were paying more attention than me:

1). Did Steve Moria win just about every face-off or what? I was very impressed with that. Of course, it all went to waste, but.....

2). Did anyone actually see what started off the Norris/Schulte fight? I, and everyone around me, was looking up the other end of the ice at the puck in play....

Actually, that's a point....
How come Norris & Sandwith got 5+GP for Fighting later on when the ealier (and MUCH nastier) fight between Norris & Schulte only snagged 2+2 penalties for each of them?
Could it be that Mike Rowe didn't want to uphold the RULES and give Schulte a 5min Fighting major, thus causing him to be suspended & fined? Maybe (like myself) he thinks that the rule is stupid - but that's irrelevant! Rules is rules..... and that was not bl**dy 'Roughing' that was a 100%, toe-to-toe, let's-get-out-there-and-t**t-it FIGHT!
Schulte AND Norris should have been binned with a major straight away.

Well, 'turned a corner' have we?? Or did we just run straight into a lamp post round the other side??
(Wish I had a pound for every time I've had to say this) The defensive performance tonight YET again was simply not good enough, they are just TOO INCONSISTENT!!!! They can play quite well some of time, but not all of the time, fine you can allow for the occasional individual poor performance but when you are talking about ALL 6 defencemen, then surely surely the coach/director of hockey/general dogsbody can see that at least 2 of the current d-men ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!!!!!! 3 statistics to wince at 46 shots on goal allowed, 7 goals allowed, & at least 3500 VERY disappointed fans.......
oh and it was the refs/linesmens changing room that was robbed, wallets/jewelry etc all gone........

This is possibly the most manic depressive guestbook I know of as we go on an unbeaten run of five games (which I can't remember the last time we did), make an almighty balls up of the Belfast game and everyone's ready to jump off cliffs. It was one game. Sometimes teams go out and nothing gels and bad results happen. But it doesn't mean that's the standard for the remainder of the season.

If anything I think Saturday showed the value of Greg Hadden. He's a great face off winner and he's been putting in some terrific gritty performances since the start of the season. Having said that we played so well in the first 5 minutes that I didn't notice he was missing other than to say 'What's Weber doing on the starting line ?'.

Does anyone know what became of Savoie ? Was he suffering with the lurgy too ?

The too many men call: The puck hit Poirier as he was skating off next to the bench and I don't know the rules verbatim but surely if a player interferes with play and the guy he's replacing is already on the ice its a penalty ? Like the other week when it was given for Hads being slow to get off the ice causing an offside.

Belfast looked very deadly when they woke up after the first five. One thing you don't do is give them a powerplay. The downturn occurred following an awful shift by Wallenberg in which he went offside twice and then hauled a Giant down from behind by his neck in frustration to give away the first PP.

Well done, Clayton. He actually attacked the right people with just cause for a change instead of indiscriminately lamping anyone who looked at him a bit funny. I'm at a loss to reason how the Fighting penalty is being handed out these days.

I think we should chalk that one up to experience and hope for a return to the good performances we have already had this year. We ain't third for nothing.

As for Saturday, just to put things a bit into perspective, a quote from a well respected Giants player, on one of the occasions that he visited the penalty box. "This is the first time this season that we managed to get the puck past that guy (Danny Lorenz) So far this season he has soaked up everything we threw at him".  So before people start to go on about Danny, just remeber that he is held in high esteem by his peers.
