Notes:
30 Stevie Lyle and 31 Danny Lorenz played in nets.
At 8.49, 21 Ashley Tait raced in on goal but was taken out of the play by two Storm defenders. He fell between the pair of them as he tried to get a shot away. Referee Rowe gave Hooking on 10 Dan Preston, but also penalised Tait for Diving much to Tait's indignance.
The Panthers first goal at 29.27 was controversial as netminder 30 Stevie Lyle argued with Referee Rowe that the puck had clipped his mask moments earlier and that play should have been stopped before 5 Patrick Wallenberg netted the rebound. Rowe overuled Lyle and the goal was allowed to stand.
At 29.57, a fight broke out between 4 Brent Pope and 22 Ivan Matulik. The trouble started after Matulik had a dig at 5 Patrick Wallenberg behind the play. Wallenberg retaliated and Pope then flew in as the puck returned and delivered a hard check on Matulik. Play continued and moments later centre ice, Matulik found Pope near the puck and crosschecked him in the face at speed, felling Pope and knocking his helmet off. Pope dropped the gloves and went for Matulik. The fight was a bit of a wrestlefest and the two men actually seemed to stop in the middle of it to exchange verbals. The stripeys tried to dive in, but the punches started once more so they dived out again. The fracas was broken up as they ended up down on the ice. Both men received 5 minutes for Roughing and Matulik was also ejected with 5+Game for the original Crosscheck.
At 36.20, 8 Clayton Norris finally got a 2 minute penalty for Roughing following a series of exchanges between himself and 11 Trevor Gallant. They had slapped each other a bit in a scuffle around the crease and Gallant seemed to want a piece of Norris. Norris had fended him off grinning and it was broken up. A shift later Gallant collided with Norris and Norris rode him into the goal. Gallant was flattened and Norris gave him a few more pushes to keep him down and generally annoy him. 7 Paul Ferone then went to the Panthers bench to have words and found 44 Barry Nieckar and 14 Frank Evans nonchalently leaning on their sticks somewhat nonplussed by Ferone's protests. Other players intervened to stop the confrontation developing any further.
61 Christian Sjogren's 5+Game penalty at 45.47 seemed more unfortunate than anything. The puck had deflected off netminder 30 Stevie Lyle and flown up into the air. 77 Kris Miller and Sjogren both tried to get under it with a glove, but they were travelling toward the boards in the process. They both flailed at the bobbling puck and Sjogren put Miller into the boards face first in the process. Miller stayed down for a while but continued shortly after. Miller was booed by the home crowd for the rest of the game following Sjogren's ejection.
With a minute and a half to go, the Storm called a time out and pulled their netminder with a face off at the Panthers end.
19 Steve Moria's goal at 59.17 was scored into an empty net.

I thought the 1st period showed a lot of good pressure
from the Panthers - camping out in their zone half the time, and plenty
of chances... unfortunately, Lyle showed why he's the GB team's no.1 goalie,
and the Storm defence did sterling work....
Only 7 SOGs for us in the 1st period? - I always take
those stats with a pinch of salt, and that shows why - to claim that Manchester
out-shot us 9-7 in that period is IMHO frankly laughable.
What the hell happened to the penalties when Pope &
Matulik fought? They both got coincidental 5-min roughing (not fighting??)
penalties, and it was also announced that Matulik got a 5+GP for the cross-check.
So why did no-one sit his second 5-min penalty then?
Plus that pathetic call on Sjogren - ye gods, a 2+10 if you're being harsh! - but 5+GP?? Interesting to notice how quickly Miller got up after this and was back on the ice shortly afterwards.... no doubt chuffed at feeding Mike Rowe the hook, line, sinker & copy of Angling Times.....
He missed an AWFUL lot of nasty stuff from Storm (they'd
obviously twigged that they'd be able to get away with it) - I'm just surprised
that we didn't have anyone taken off injured.
However, there's bound to be a Supplemental Discipline
thing on Sjogren - which he will, of course, lose....
I think Storm looked a damn sight stronger than the previous times we've seen them - but that's still 11 points out of 12 (so far) that we've blagged off 'em! Heh, heh....
Nice to see Lee Jinman back at full strength (or should I say, speed?) - good goal, too. And a fine effort from Barry Neickar (although this will, of course, be ignored by the Barry Neickar Hate Club).
Sjogren - we definitely need to keep hold of him...
Just request from me for the team :-
SCREEN
THE
NETMINDER
...which they are STILL not doing - some great offensive work behind the net, around the sides, and good passing - but not much cop if there's no-one making the goalie's life a misery! All the other teams seem to do it.... so surely we can't get penalised for it?

Well a good game last night by all accounts. I thought the first period was lacking in flair on both teams part but the second and third made up for it and we came out with a well deserved win. I think it was clear after Manchester had played reasonably well in the first that the only way was down and so it proved and by the end of the game they were dire and almost unable to put together a single pass. That culminated in a truly awful powerplay on Sjogren's penalty.
As for Sjogren I agree that we have seen him for the last time, or at least will see him for the last time tonight if he plays. This is a great shame as he has shown he is a very capable hockey player and has been very unlucky. As for Kris Miller well that man should be utterly ashamed of himself because he has quite possibly robbed another player of an ISL contract by pure gamesmanship. The guy was not hurt at all and skated on the next shift, it was quite clear that he had faked injury in order to gain an advantage, dispicable in my opinion. It looked like Sjogren thought so too as from my lofty perch I spotted him standing in the Pantherslair entrance by the stage and as soon as the announcement came that Miller had scored Storm's second goal he turned round and punched and kicked the wall, clear what he thought of Miller's play acting!
Ivan Matulik was up to his tricks as usual too! Very amusing to see him pick on one of his old Cardiff mates who is hardly blessed with his fists and then take a battering from him in the fight! =o) I didn't see the actual cross check but for Poper to lose it it must have been pretty ugly.
All our goals were pretty good goals too, Barry's was a peach and the way Sjogren set up Lee for his was good too, also excellent to see us score on the empty net. So thats two more points and for now we are joint second, its looking good, especially after all the moans about how crap we are earlier in the season.

Sjogren: I truely hope that the coaches both realise that getting chucked out of a few of your first few games isn't the end of the world. Re: The incident in which he was ejected, I was lucky to be sitting in the box above where the incident took place. Not from that angle did it look anything worth 2 minutes... players get hurt, if they hit the boards during a play it doesn't have to have been because of a foul. Bad body angle, speed and any number of factors can make a player fall down.... it was a wrong call and hopefully if Panthers are sending in video evidence on Matulik they'll also ask for Sjogren's incident to be reviewed.

If GM gets rid of Sjorgen i'm gonna stalk him until he re-signs him. The guy was sheer CLASS last night, a bit reckless at times but otherwise class. He was twice the speed of the other players and he was hitting and scrapping and doing all the good stuff. I thought Europeans were supposed to not like the rough stuff.
Where oh where has the 2+10 for checking from behind gone?? Sjogren was just finishing his check (take note panthers ;-) ) when Miller turned to face the plexi, the puck had only just gone, it was just an accident Rowe totally over reacted. Does that mean he's already got a 1 match ban???
Otherwise a good game thought Moria was great and so was
Barry, he didn’t play a bad shift all night. I just hope we can so something
about these first periods at the NIC, they are pretty lame at the mo, 0
1st period goals in three games.

Good game, well the 2nd & 3rd periods were anyway! What's the betting Sjogren gets the mandatory 5 game ban, which imho will see him back off to Svenska. Hope we pay the £100 quid for the ISL to have a look at what Matulik did, cross checking someone in the face should be AT LEAST 5 games if not more!! Dirty bar-steward, never liked him anyway, comedy award goes to Gallant for thinking that he would actually stand a icecubes chance in hell going against Clayton!! LMFAO!!!! Trev', matey, you ain't Theo Fleury!

Am intrigued that people think the Storm played well last night - seems to me that Lipsey's resugence is based on a large dose of cheating, illegal use of the boards, dodgy stick work and down right intimidation which we managed to withstand.
Felt Rowe had a below par game for him - let things flow
OK but missed some serious stuff - Tait rammed head first into the boards
- literally grabbed by the shorts and scruff of the neck and thrust into
the boards behind their net and Wilson taking Carlsson into the boards
and then slamming his head down onto the parapet edge by their bench. The
penalty on Sjorgren was clearly faked by Miller as the crash was him slamming
his stick into the boards from where I was sitting as I had a clear view
and it seemed me Rowe called it on what he thought happened. As for not
throwing out Ferone who came off the bench 3 times to have a go at inspiring
trouble and then went off again it was just downright crap. I am all for
letting the teams sort it out themselves but when one side is clearly hellbent
on disrupting at all costs then the ref has to step in IMO. It occurs to
me our lot were both playing within themselves and the Drizzle knew it
as we play the old enemy tonight. Thought the goal Sjorgren manufatured
down the left wing was brilliant and wasn't disappointed by any player
at all, even Savioe :-) Bazza's goal was funny - maybe he'll go an stand
in front of the net now? Drolet looked pure class last night as did Maloney
and Frankie Evans had one of his every three game stand outs but thought
Mr Carlsson had a very quiet game, maybe they were keying on him and becuase
of tonight no-one could stand up for him ?
Lorenz did have a great game making some unbelievable
saves but again felt Lyle got away with loads - twice checking players
behind the play.
On a personal level I'm not too bothered if Poirier does
go back to Newcastle - think in Droiun we have a ready made replacement
who seems inspired by the captaincy, Poirier just doesn't seem to have
quite done it here. Maybe its because he was a standout in a poor team
before and we have bucket loads of talent that means sheer hard work and
grit isn't as noticeable? On the Bazza front, maybe we all will be surprized
come the end of the season, he seems to be picking up points rather frequently
of late, irrespective we should sort out Clayton Norris now, he is future
of our 'policing' needs now IMO, and he can play hockey, and of course
he's totally of his trolley :-))) Witness the throat grab and lift on Trevor
'The garden ornament' Gallant last night - you could see the question in
his mind ' Do I eat you, tread on you or go find some far more dangerous
and interesting thing to play with?' Most amusing, especially Gallant's
obvious confusion when Norris just threw him aside. All in all the right
result, not without some controversy - still how good does it get - off
for Xmas, winning at hockey, with friends, drinking beer and seeing the
useless Matulik beaten up and thrown out - marvelous!

Good game last night. Baz's goal was great. I leapt out of my seat by about five feet when it went in as I couldn't actually believe that I'd just seen Baz do what I'd seen him do. He takes a shot, Lyle blocks and tries to fall on the rebound, Baz narrowly gets there first when a lot of players would have given it up as the N/M's puck, he holds off two defenders and ends up with his back to goal, at which point Baz slides the puck through Lyle's legs on the backhand. Great move !
The stand out player for me was Frank Evans though. He did some brilliant D-work at the back to break up some very threatening plays around our net. I unreservedly take back everything I said when we signed him. He's turned out to be anything but the liability I branded him as.
Danny The Starfish made some fantastic saves again, Shogun was very unlucky to get thrown out. I thought it was more of a collision than anything. Matulik should get at least a couple more games off after the cross check to Pope's face. He almost took his head off and his helmet went flying. Not a good fight, but I'd say at best for Pope it was a draw.
Rowe was very poor. From the simultaneous Diving/Hooking call to missing the dozens of stickings and other dirty tactics the Storm were employing as well as Lyle checking people to the Shogun throwing out, he was rolling dice to come up with the penalties.
Comedy Moment Of The Match: Ferone squaring up to the
Panthers bench with Evans and Baz casually leaning on the boards going
'Who do you think you are ? Andy Bezeau ?'.
