Notes:
31 Danny Lorenz and 30 Stevie Lyle played in nets. The Panthers' starting forward lines were Sjogren/Hadden/Poirier, Drouin/Jinman/Wallenberg, Nieckar/Moria/Savoie with 21 Ashley Tait swapping on the third line with Savoie every other shift. The Panthers' starting defensive lines were Carlsson/Norris, Paek/Pope, Drolet/Maloney.
Andy Carson refereed this game and it was his first return to the NIC since the penalty debacle in Sheffield. He was loudly booed from the first moment he set foot on the ice.
61 Christian Sjogren's Illegal Use Of Equipment penalty at 0.47 resulted when he lost his helmet and rather daftly played on with the puck right under Carson's nose.
At 3.14, Linesman Folka called a Too Many Men penalty on the Storm. This was argued by them and after a protracted debate Referee Carson washed the penalty. This is the first time I've ever seen a Too Many Men get washed.
There were more complaints from the Storm at 11.51 after 19 Steve Moria scored. The was a claim that the net had come off its moorings by an inch or two and then dropped back down after the puck had passed through the mouth of the goal. The stripeys disagreed, or at least didn't see, and let the goal stand.
Following 21 Ashley Tait's goal at 25.06, netminder 30 Stevie Lyle threw a bit of a paddy in his crease in frustration and sent his water bottle flying, before rather sheepishly then having to go and fetch it.
At 36.00, 72 Lee Jinman cleared the puck from his own zone by belting it off the boards. He came within moments of beheading 17 P.C. Drouin with it as Drouin had to hit the deck to avoid the puck which slammed off the plexi where his head had been. Both men skated away laughing.
At 42.00, it appeared 7 Paul Ferone had highsticked 8 Clayton Norris. Norris fell to the ice like a dead weight and when a stoppage was finally called, he left the ice bleeding heavily from a cut right eye. Unfortunately Carson missed the incident and no penalty was given. Norris returned to play later in the third period in a Number 30 shirt, presumably as his 8 shirt had blood all over it.
The Storm Bench penalty at 52.56 for Unsportsmanlike Conduct seemed to result after Storm Captain 22 Ivan Matulik argued the Panthers fourth goal for an age. He claimed there was a man in the crease, but this was dismissed by the stripeys and goal scorer 44 Barry Nieckar skated back to his bench grinning that we were on a powerplay as Matulik had said too much.
For the last five minutes of the game, the crowd amused itself by chanting for Storm netminder 33 Mike 'Torchy' Torchia, possibly the most popular opposition player never to have played for the Panthers. Requests of 'Give us a wave, Torchy' and 'Blow us a kiss, Torchy' were obliged by the netminder and the chants of 'We want Torchy' fairly reduced him to hysterics.

Thought we played pretty good at times at last nite, but
then we also looked a bit shaky at the back now & again as well! Think
a better team than Storm may have taken more advantage of that as well,
but hey we got the 2 points & that's all that matters at the moment!
How come nobody spotted Ferone's blatant high-stick on
Clayton??? Blood on the ice, guilty looking storm player skating away,
talk about obvious m'lud!
Torchy! Wot a star, bloody hope he signs for us next
season, for the comedy value alone! Boy was he having a laff with block
5!!

I really enjoyed the game last night. I didn't think we were crap at all. Once we got 3-0 and then let them start coming back I was thinking 'Oh God we're gonna throw it away again', but then Baz of all people steps up shoots into Lyle's body, but fishes out the rebound to put it in the open net. Moria's goal was a case of the third time of asking as well as Clayton had already shot twice. Can't say I noticed this 'stickwork' Scuff was on about particularly, but one thing I did notice was that we seemed to be crashing the net big style. And surely we had no right to be all over the rebounds. Where was the Storm defence while all this was going on ? But then I guess that's their problem and why they're propping up the league.
Interesting to see that Tait was swapping with Savoie on the third line instead of Baz as he usually does.
Great chants for Torchy too. Well funny. Is this guy the most popular opposition player never to have played for the Panthers or what ? Some achievement considering he started with the Steelers !
Thought Carson was average. I can't remember ever seeing a Too Many Men penalty get washed before though. Also was the net off the moorings for Moria's goal ? And was Baz in the crease for the fourth ? Matulik could complain for his country.
I loved the end though when they played 'We're Gonna Win' with a minute to go. The music cut out at the face off and the whole crowd (a very big crowd too. Attendance anyone ?) carried on clapping for the last minute of the game. Great atmosphere !
Comedy Moment Of The Match: Either the woman who had obviously won £300 in the 50/50 leaping about on the back row of Block 4. Jinman almost beheading Drouin with a clearance and Drouin having to hit the deck in a commando stylee. Then there's the Torchy of course.....

I agree Kendra, I too thought we're gonna throw it away again but we kept battling hard and secured a good win. I thought we were on fire until we went 3-0 up and then we stopped as if we had thought the game was won, I think we need to get something from Ayr in Midweek if we are to finish second and lets hope Sheffield can do us a favour for once tonight.
I actually Thought Carson was okay in the first other than missing the blant trip on Norris in front of lorenz will killing a penalty before giving Norris a penalty seconds later.
As for the Too Many Men at the time Folka blew the whistle both teams had Too Many Men on the ice as Wallenberg had left the bench while Sjogren casually skated to the bench, I guess this was the reason it got washed out.
Out first goal did look like the net was raised on the mooring from where I was sat BUT not off the moorings.
I don't know if anyone else saw it but my Comedy Moment Of The Match: was Mark Bultje coming out of the penalty box on his knees after falling out of the box.

Comedy Moment for me....
Was when Druin winds up for the slap shot 2 feet out, misses the puck and hits Lyle in the face mask with the follow through.....
Did you see Stevie, when he's picked himself up out of the back of the net look at Carson as if to say...... 'What the F........k !"
I'm sure Lyles head went over the goal line....... surley
we should have been awarded a goal !

Good enough result last night, although a typical Panthers
performance. Great start and then off the rails, and as Scuff said, the
over elaboration is sometimes criminal.

Enjoyed last nights game...much more relaxed being a neutral
in the NIC..Storm were dire for most of the game, You lot were fast but
seemed to want to overelaborate a tad..Didnt think the score reflected
the game in honesty..Storm did seem to rally a bit tho that 4th goal took
the wind right out of their sails..and finshed the game off.
One thing I noticed which, when i mentioned it to Tex
and Kendra seemed to upset em, was that you lot tended to wave the stick
around more than I have ever noticed any team do..seemed weird against
a team that offered hardly any physical resistance whatsoever (Feromone
excepted..what was he doing on that breakaway?).I dont meann hooking eyes
out, but a lot of mid body 'slashes'(not hooks) and carrying the stick
fairly high...Possibly Shoguns influence? as I noted when you lot first
signed him that some folks saw him carrying his stick naturally high..mind
you, against the likes of Gallant and Allard...8-)

Oh dear, weren't were crap tonight? Best moment of the
game was Nieckar's goal---I was once a big critic of Barry, but in recent
times I think he's played well and hasn't deserved the criticism he's received
on this site from certain people. But that's what makes a site like this
worth while--people's opinions.
