Notes:

31 Danny Lorenz and 31 Joaquin Gage started in nets.  The Panthers' starting forward line were Hadden/Poirier/Wallenberg, Drouin/Jinman/Tait, Neickar/Moria/Norris.  The Panthers' starting defensive lines were Drolet/Maloney, Carlsson/Pope, Evans/Drolet.  The defencemen then rotated to cover 8 Clayton Norris playing on the forward lines to cover the absence of 16 Claude Savoie who was suspended for five games after a retrospective penalty was levied for a check on London's Rich Bronilla in a previous game.  17 Ed Courtenay dressed and warmed up for the Eagles but did not play.

At 13.02, 11 Greg Hadden was felled out of a face off by an accidental high stick from 16 Shawn Byram.  Everyone stopped for a moment, but as a stop in play wasn't called, 32 Joel Poirier realised the puck was still live and attempted to play it.  The referee blew up moments later as it became apparent Hadden was staying down.  As Hadden left the ice bleeding this meant Byram received an automatic 2+2.  Hadden rejoined play a few shifts later with bruising across his nose and brow.

At 17.45, 11 Cam Bristow got tangled up with 24 Jimmy Drolet an punched Drolet in the face.  Drolet stepped back from the fight at which point 8 Clayton Norris went for Bristow and returned some solid blows of his own to Bristow's face.  Bristow lost his helmet and a pad during the onslaught and the stripeys dived in to save him once Norris got him down on the ice.  Both men received 2+2 for Roughing as the referees' reluctance to award Fighting penalties continues, but Norris also received a 2 minute unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for reasons unknown.  18 A.J. Kelham sat in the penalty bin to take over from the second penalty.

There were verbals going off at 22.38.  44 Barry Nieckar was having words with 21 Ian Herbers and there was a bit of pushing going on.  This followed on from more eyeballing earlier between Nieckar and 13 Dody Wood.  The stripeys ushered all parties away and no penalties resulted.

The Panther's Too Many Men penalty at 32.25 resulted when 24 Jimmy Drolet came out of the penalty bin and took a leisurely wander back to the bench.  32 Joel Poirier's exit from the bench to replace him was not so leisurely and the call was easy for the stripeys to make.

At 36.42, the Panthers took another bench penalty reportedly for coach Paul Adey mouthing off at referee Kirkham.  When the Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty was called, Adey threw a towel up in the air.  18 A.J. Kelham sat out the penalty and Ayr scored on the resulting powerplay.  The Panthers are now league leaders in bench penalty minutes by a ratio of roughly two to one over the next nearest team.

At around 52.00 there was an announcement that a major fire was in progress in Nottingham's City Centre and so if we smelt smoke there was no need to worry !

At 53.43, 11 Cam Bristow was poleaxed as a team mate's slapshot went wide and struck him in the head just on the ear.  32 Joel Poirier who had been marking him stopped dead as Bristow fell flat on his face and lay motionless.  Play was stopped immediately and there was collective holding of breath from players and fans alike.  Then Bristow who had looked like he was totally out for the count, literally sprang to his feet, angrily shoved away Poirier (who had been genuinely concerned) and made his way to the bench clutching his bleeding ear.  Bristow rejoined play a few shifts later.

At 59.09, the Eagles called a time out and on winning the following face off just outside the Panther's zone, pulled their netminder.

What a difference a week makes. After that appalling display last Saturday, it was like watching a different team last night. I don't think I've seen a Panthers team play with so much grit and determination as they did last night. They didn't let their heads drop when Ayr took the lead, and came back to take the points with some style. The netminding last night was superb, Joquaim Gage is without question the best netminder in this league, some of the saves he pulled off were quite stunning.
After the game I thought Moria should have been MOM, but on reflection I think Hadden deserved it more as his back checking and overall defensive play was superb. I agree though that PC did have a poor game, despite scoring. If you think about it, all the moves that broke down were generally due to him playing a poor pass, or giving the puck straight to an Ayr player.
I also owe an apology to Clayton Norris. When he was banned I was calling for for him to be gassed. Since he came back though, he has been excellent. Not only can he look after himself and his team mates, he can also play a bit too, which he showed last night.
Overall a great performance, the only minus being Adey's inability to keep his gob shut, the shocking line change which lead to a too many men penalty and the reckless penalty that Poirier took near the end, you don't expect stupidity like that from the captain.

In the first period panthers dominated the game edging the possession and creating the majority of the chances (at the end of first you had outshot them 13-8). Admittedly Ayr had the best of chances but was kept about by a superb diving save/crossbar (a save I think I'll still be talking about this time next year). Ayr went about their usual clutch and grab and niggling little tricks but Panthers fought fire with fire as has to be done and it has to be said did it a whole lot better than Ayr. Norris gave Bristow a beating he probably won't forget for a while which stopped any further hints of high sticking/minor injury causing tactics.

The second period was more even and Ayr outshot the panthers slightly (13-12) but to be fair the goal was on an Ayr powerplay and an odd man breakaway after Nottingham had successfully pressed Ayr into their own zone. It was the one defensive slip off the night from both teams. As for Gage not liking them low in the corners it seems to me as though he loves them down there (it seems as though he loves them anywhere).

Third period the guys had there heads and kept on putting in the effort. Drouins goal was pure class all the way. He stalked the slot, Kelham saw him completely free and stroked an excellent pass right where Droiun wanted it and he hit a first time bullet which he managed to keep low and place perfectly across Gage. The shot was unstoppable, certainly by anyone in this league, due to its ferocity and accuracy, Gage didn't have a chance to get across and set himself properly so just tried to throw a pad across desperately before the back of the net rippled and the light went on. Moria's was another excellent goal. He found space on the far side (Glove) and another perfect pass from Drolet across goal allowed Moria to first timer straight to the top shelf. This time the puck was past Gage before he'd had a chance to move his glove up there, and lets be honest when it comes to catching him he's quicker than a cat. (or in the words of Terry Pratchett his glove seems to move from by his side to the catch the puck without passing through any of the space in between.) Also excellent last gasp defending for the last minute when they pulled Gage and had a two man advantage. It was an all round great performance.

It was a hard working performance from everyone last night.  As for the Eagles goals, the blame rests solely at the coach Paul Adey for taking Bench Penalties again, firstly we need to practice changing lines and secondly keep our mouths shut.

I thought Drouin had a good game and worked hard all night adn he is on the all star team because he is one of the best. Funny how things change from last season, where is he was the best thing since sliced bread.

Great game, great result, it really was a 'must win' type of game & WE DID!! So, I'm a very happy Panthers fan today!! And imho, Joaquin Gage should still be playing in the NHL, top class NM he thoroughly deserved their m.o.t.m award.....
One minor moan, PLEASE DITCH THE 'ROBIN HOOD' THEME!! It's about as inspiring as a kick in yer wotsits.......

That WAS a nail-biting 3rd period, wasn't it? The Ayr goalie was undoubtedly their MoM - stopped a huge number of shots that most others would have let in - the Ayr fans I was talking to in the Bunkers afterwards were saying that the score would have been about 5-1 if it hadn't been for him! (they were also very complimentary about Danny Lorenz). I get the feeling they liked our team's style... ;-))
And wasn't it great to have Hadden back?

I still (personal preference) don't like Ayr's "blue-line clutch & grab" (quoting Tambo) style - even the legal parts of it (and there was plenty of Illegal) - but the Panthers players IMHO coped very well with it....

I don't personally think that anyone but the committed complainers can criticise the team's effort last night - 100% all the way, from my POV. But, hey - what do I know?

Wow.

That game was FANTASTIC. Everything hockey should be. The netminders stood on their head (brilliant diving save by Danny in the first period), the defenders closed the forwards down, the skilled played and the checkers/fighters checked (and in one isntance fought). To be fair you looked a totally different team out there tonight then the last time I saw you (the London game) and got a well deserved win.

Drouin and Moria both scored excellent goals after good build up play (and if anyone has videoclips of them then please let me know). Basically, apart from one unlucky bounce/defensive slip which caused the goal no one I thought had a particularly bad game.

I was well happy with the Panthers performance last night. It was a gritty stand against the team who are second in the division. I've heard it said that Ayr are tending to go 1-0 up and then defend due to the intractable nature of the magnificent Gage. But we battled well and brought it back with two powerplay goals in the end.

Thought Norris is much better as a forward which I've said for ages. Also thought Tait, who I don't rate a great deal at all had a good game and he was getting stuck into them. Maloney was well solid last night and I can now see what Jono's been saying that he is well classy.

My problem from last night is Adey giving up yet more bench penalties. The stats on the ISL site now apparently show we have twice as many minutes in bench penalties as anyone else and when we go a goal down on a line change where Drolet is taking a wander to the bench and nobody's got hold of Poirier's collar to say 'Woe there, tiger !' its a bit daft. Then while 1-0 down we take another stupid bench minor 'cos Adey doesn't know when to stop arguing with the ref..... This ain't the way to run a bench.

Comedy Moment Of The Match #1: The announcer: "There is a major fire in Nottingham City Centre, so if you smell smoke don't worry.". Err, right 'cos its just your car that might be burning then ?

Comedy Moment Of The Match #2: "And Birthday Greetings go out to Frankie Dempster.". Crowd boos. "And Frankie is 11 years old today.". Oops, they didn't mean the Frank Dempster who is the ISL's disciplinary chief then ?
