Notes:

31 Danny Lorenz and 39 Mikhall Shtalenkov played in nets.  The Panthers had borrowed ex-Panther 42 Duncan Paterson and Milton Keynes Kings player/coach 14 Rick Strachan for the game.  The Panthers' starting forward lines were Wallenberg/Moria/Poirier, Savoie/Jinman/Drouin, Nieckar/Weber/Norris.  The Panthers' starting defensive lines were Drolet/Maloney, Carlsson/Pope, Strachan/Paterson.  26 Ravil Yakubov wore a 'K' which I assume is the Russian equivilant of the Captain's 'C'.  Oddly out of the Dynamo's 26-strong squad, they shared only 15 different first names and featured no less than 6 Alexanders.

There was only one 2 minute penalty in the first period, although whether this was due to fair play or referee Kirkham letting things flow is open to debate.  There were some odd wind up stickings going on around the benches during line changes and 44 Barry Nieckar took 16 Andrei Skopintaev's number with 8 Clayton Norris doing likewise with 36 Dmitri Semenov.

By the second period the Panthers had figured out that the Dynamo's were simply checking them off the puck instead of tackling and starting doing the same back.  This period was goalless, but there was plenty of action with just about every player who touched the puck either checking or being checked moments later.  When 10 Randall Weber delivers a check mid-ice which knocks a player bigger than him head over heels you KNOW its getting physical out there.  Some of the challenges were disputed and 44 Barry Nieckar also took 33 Roman Zolotov's number, explaining to him (in no doubt flawless Russian) that its not really necessary to try and park 16 Claude Savoie head down in his own bench when the puck's already flying away to the other end of the ice.

By the third period, everyone knew where they stood and 72 Lee Jinman had started taking numbers as 44 Barry Nieckar now had more than he could easily remember.

The Dynamo goal at 42.35 was questioned as the puck came off the feet of either the attacker or defender who were both wrestling in front of the Panthers' net.  31 Danny Lorenz claimed it had been kicked in, but the referee ruled it had been a deflection and the goal stood.

72 Lee Jinman, who had already had words with 36 Dmitri Semenov, got into an ongoing scuffle with 12 Alexander Kuvaldin which continued as they went all the way up the ice.  Referee Kirkham gave them both 2 minute Roughing minors at 44.13 to keep the peace more than anything.

The Panthers' goal at 48.51 was announced as being assisted by 32 Joel Poirier, but it was blatantly 8 Clayton Norris who threw in the speculative shot from the boards, which 72 Lee Jinman dived to get a stick on as he came from round the back of the net.  He beat the defenceman to the puck narrowly and it bobbled through the unfortunate netminder's feet.  Prior to this the Dynamo's four penalty killers had retained possession of the puck for roughly a minute, passing it around with the Panthers' powerplay unit barely getting anywhere near it, until Norris intervened.

At 52.40, there was finally a scuffle as 10 Randall Weber got into a shoving match with a Dynamo player on the boards behind the Panthers' net.  4 Brent Pope stepped in to get him off Weber, another Dynamo got hold of Pope and then 10 Mikhall Ivanov rather excitedly tried to leap in to get Weber at which point he was caught by 42 Duncan Paterson and pinned against the boards.  The stripeys broke it up before any real punches of note were thrown and no penalties were given.

I have to say, that was an extremely enjoyable game of hockey! I was also pleasantly surprised by the result - and if, as appeared to myself & those around me, their 2nd goal was 'kicked in', then more than just a moral victory?

Are those Russians FAST or what? - and I don't just mean simple speed, either. Their reaction times seem to be much shorter than ISL standard, their 'quick-flick' passing was a joy to watch, and they did seem to counter-attack with almost blinding speed. Given that the Panthers do seem to be one of the faster teams overall in the ISL this year, maybe they were expecting to run rings round us - so perhaps Sheffield & Manchester might suffer?
And did the visitors pour it on shots wise or what? - shooting at every opportunity from any angle. How the hell Danny managed to keep most of 'em out I don't know, but those First Star and MoM awards were no less than he deserved IMHO..

You could tell that Dynamo expected to win tonight - they were getting VERY frustrated by the 3rd, and their discipline went right out the window....

What was with Randall "The Terminator" Weber tonight? Not just that beautiful mid-ice "CRUNCH!" check, but he was getting right into the thick of it all game! Lovely....Who said Russians don't play it physical - ha ha!  And yet again, for the Barry Neickar Hate Club - some fine work from the man, in addition to a few 'words to the wise' in his enforcer role....  Oh, and Tovarisch? - you don't want to do that to Clayton you know... (and it's Mr Norris SIR! to you, mate!).

Other highlights for me - some gorgeous stick-work by PC Drouin, some right solid defending by Brent Pope, Lee Jinman almost breaking the sound barrier, and Duncan Paterson - COME BACK!!!

On the subject of Danny "Starfish" Lorenz.... anyone else notice that the D-men seem to be working much better with him now? He's still giving up rebounds, but the blue-liners tonight seemed to be almost telepathic in picking up the loose puck almost immediately.

Anyone want to bet if we'd been at full strength (and not hit the ruddy post so often!), the Panthers could have won it tonight? Before the game, I wouldn't have thought it possible, but....  If the Panthers can keep this up, then some of the other teams could be in for a right nasty surprise! ;-))

Hads, Tait, Sjogren and Evans didn't play due to slight injuries they are carrying therefore giving them more time to recover before the next league game.  To be honest I would have re-signed Paterson to make 6 d-men and played norris as a forward.

Well, good game tonight, certainly not the result i was expecting!  Big Duncan Paterson still looks like a damn good d-man, imho we should have kept him!  Thought the Russians looked a bit 'leggy', if they arrived today, then maybe we got off easy tonight.

Sorry to bring people back to earth having gone stratospheric about last night's game. I was there and I was obviously watching a different game. It appeared to me that the Russians took the game to casually almost like a 'Challenge Game' or a practice. I believe, looking to the first period, that they could up the ante at any time and given Panthers a right going over. They appeared to be comfortable most of the time but their finishing was extremely poor IMO. The Russians tended to make that one extra pass when it was not necessary and I think 'at times' they were taking the p**s. The Panthers did well considering the opposition and you cannot take that away from them but realistically a bunch of second rate hockey players, by Russian standards, could not have coped had the Russkies decided not to stay in first gear. Should the Russians have moved up a gear or two the Panthers would have had to bring their own puck because sure as hell they wouldn't have had a sniff at the one the Russians were using!!! Burn On!!!

Not flaming you, Hockeyfreek, but I have to disagree with your assertion that the Russians weren't trying. Maybe they weren't going 100% in the first period, but by the time the 2nd period came round (and then especially in the 3rd) you could plainly see that they were not coasting! It seemed fairly obvious to me that Dynamo (understandably) expected to be winning comfortably by the first interval - the fact that they weren't caused them to not only step up their game, but also get a bit frustrated - hence some of the argy-bargy.  What the hell - I enjoyed the game immensely, and I thought that the Panthers played a blinder.

I'll 2nd that Shaggy!. I too thought it was a excellent game last night, & that the Panthers performed admirably. Again, it seems no matter what the Panthers do, they can't do right for doing wrong!. I heard someone on the way out last night say, 'If they had played like that all season, they'd be bloody top'. Whilst I & a fair few of other people would agree with that, there was such negativity in the whole attitude of this person. I can imagine if we had been slaughtered, the answer would have been, 'Panthers are crap & didn't even try'. Or such words. Like you Shaggy, I am hoping, NOT SAYING!!..That we can use this as a stepping stone/moral booster...to bigger & better things.
I certainly for one had a bloody great time last night, & enjoyed a DAMN good game of Hockey.

I hereby proclaim today as "Agree With Shaggy Day"

I thought that last nights game had to be the best challenge game I have seen. The Russians were coasting early doors, but you could see that they became rattled and by the third period were really trying. I suspect that the results against Manchester and Sheffield will reveal more on the matter, and I am sure that we will get the Russian Coaches comments soon.

Have to agree with you Hockeyfreek, those Ruskies were no way putting the effort in last night at all. Did you see nearly all the players during the M-O-M presentations laughing and joking and then after the game where they carried on the laughing and joking? Hardly the hallmark of a team really putting it in me thinks. I get a feeling all the 'we've turned the corner brigade' will be out it force again, we cannot compare how well we'll fare against a team who quite frankly weren't too bothered.  Randall, that drinks waiting for you mate, well played.  Still, I thought they were better than Lada Togliatti!!
