* Did Not Dress

Notes:

42 Paul Moran and 61 Adam Radmall dressed for the Panthers but did not play.  31 Danny Lorenz played in goal.  The Panthers starting forward lines were Poirer/Hadden/Savoie, Drouin/Moria/Wallenberg, Nieckar/Weber/Tait.  Later on Tait was switched with Wallenberg.  The Panthers starting defensive lines were Carlsson/Norris, Pope/Drolet, Maloney/Evans.

The Blaze's goal at 17.27 did not end their powerplay as had been expected.  It was ruled that a further penalty had been called and as it was delayed this was cancelled out instead of the first penalty being let out of the box.

At 43.17, 7 Mathias Soderstrom had to leave the ice for treatment after receiving a neck injury.

3 Steve Carpenter's Illegal Equipment penalty at 44.38 resulted when his helmet was knocked off and he attempted to play on.

8 Clayton Norris's penalty at 52.47 was delayed the wrong way.  The Panthers had possession and it was only when the puck was touched by a Blaze player that the delayed penalty was called on Norris somewhat confusingly.

With roughly two minutes to go the Blaze pulled their netminder.  Moments later a shot by 11 Greg Hadden from the Panthers back line hit the post.

The Blaze goal at 59.31 was scored with their netminder pulled.  In the celebrations that followed one Blaze player accidentally high sticked another Blaze player in the face and he required treatment.

I tell you what guys, I reckon we were lucky to scrape a 4-4 draw last night. If the Blaze had iced two of there best/better players, Stevie Cooper and Steve Chartrand, we might have been on for a defeat at the rate we were going. All in all, looking back on it I still can't believe how poor we were last night and I envy anyone who didn't see us last night for any particular reason.

Here's a message for all Jordan Willis fans - don't worry he hasn't gone back to the fire brigade. He has simply had a makeover and a name change to Danny Lorenz. Made a couple of good one on one stops but decided to just lie down for Coventry's 2nd (I think it was their second) and went for a wander whenever he felt like it. As the guy in front of me said, they should tie him to the posts.

Of the new players, Wallenberg and Poirier impressed me, other than that it was pretty bad. I hope those two play with Hadden, I thought that line looked good, as did Ash with PC & Moria. Goodness knows what's going to happen with the defensive pairings though.

Finally, the Blaze goal celebration was hilarious! As my step-sister said, "why are they w*nking themselves when they score.............."

danny lorenz; the guy doesn't get crap overnight + we look to be getting another top goalie so he'll have to do well or he's on the bench.  I for one enjoyed myself last night, sure the guys looked a bit crap but at times it was clear to me that we will do a LOT better this year than last, we are so much deeper in all areas. the powerplay was pretty poor due to it being our second game of the season, everyone was overcomplicating matters and calle looked a bit shot-shy. these guys need time together to learn how each other plays the game, i'm sure we'll see a different panthers on saturday.

Well what a pile of sh**e that was tonight. A very undeserved 4-4 draw against opponents who will finish around 3rd or 4th in the BNL is simply not good enough for my liking.
I am seriously concerned about our third line at the moment guys, in fact I’m very worried. Whoever gets to play on the third line with Rudy and Nieckar, well my heart goes out to them. Take for instance Ash tonight played the first period alongside the duo and was plainly invisible during the play. Soon as he moves off the line, hey presto it’s the Ash Tait we know so well with his puck carrying skills on show to everybody. Now to Wallenberg, and in my eyes along with Mo were the best two players for us in the first period or two, look what happens when he’s plonked onto a line with Rudi and Nieckar and hey presto, the guy becomes invisible. It happened on Monday and it’s happened again, coincidence?? Me thinks not.

Something else I’m very worried about is the ability of a certain Mr Lorenz between our pipes and on the face of it, the poor bloke couldn’t catch a cold. Tonight rebounds were flying left, right and worstly centre for any forward worth his salt to dispatch and no disrespect to Blaze’s forwards, but he’ll get crucified if he does the same on Saturday. I really hope this is a blip tonight (although the signs don’t look good) and he comes into some form soon or else we might just be looking at our starting choice of n/m being Marco Magliaradi in the foreseeable future.

Overall tonight, what made it worst for me was when I went to the bogs in the second period and I overheard several Blaze fans actually laughing about how shockingly and amazingly bad we were. And in all honesty, tonight we were p**s poor and couldn’t string three or four decent passes together. I lost count of how many passes went straight to a Blaze’s players stick for them to break to the other end. To me tonight the Panthers didn’t look like they were trying which in a way is a slap in the face for us who travelled down to Coventry and paid good money to watch the poor fare that was on offer tonight. I take my hat off to Coventry, they wanted it bad and it’s just a shame we didn’t want the win bad enough too.

Our forwards just don’t seem potent enough in front of goal and again, we have men who are reluctant to crash the net and screen Mr Netminder. We will win absolutely zilch if we carry on the way we are going. What we need is TWO more forwards or Adey dressed regular and one new forward.

I’ve seen some bad performances in my time but that one tonight stunk. I expect some people to say that ‘we’ve only played two games’ and I say fair enough, one was against the best team I’ve ever seen play in Nottingham, old barn or new, but where o’ where was the will to win tonight that has made the Panthers such formidable opponents in the past? Obviously they left it outside the team coach in Nottingham.

Lets hope Saturday is 100% better than tonight or I fear the worst, I really do.

Oh and I forgot to mention, Carson was complete and utter crap tonight as usual although that's no excuse at all. He was up to his usual tricks of calling what the crowd saw instead of what he actually saw. It's odds on we're going to get this 'impersonator' of a referee for a third successive game on Saturday. Don't you just love him??????  Didn't think so......

Oh dear!
I hope that was just a blip, otherwise it's going to be a long, hard season again.
Passing was woeful at times & some of them don't know when to shoot. (PP was pretty dreadful tonight too). fair play to Coventry though, they were much the better side on the night.
Let's see what Saturday brings.

Carson was also the pits yet again tonight. The thing that worries me the most is that Carson is useless and Moray hanson is worse!!!  ISL please sort out the referees, they are getting worse.

Ouch. Simms, Blaiser and Brebant laughing at our woeful display - that hurts. Doesn't matter how long the teams been together and whether it's a challenge match we shouldn't have been THAT bad; don't care what the inept Panther performance apologisers have to say in their defence, it was awful. 40 yr old Moria looked our only dangerman and Hadden was the only player of the forwards looking game fit. As for Lorenz, if that was the worst game of his career then fair enough everyone makes mistakes...but if that's his normal game then heaven can only help us this season.

Having seen Panthers Sunday and tonight I can confirm quite a few facts. Firstly we are a significantly better team than last year - even excepting the fact that Drolet looks like he has been brainwashed during the Summer and Clayton is trying to force the play too much, I defy anyone to tell me that they would rather have Lavoie and Burke rather than Maloney and Evans. Secondly our three forward lines are much deeper in talent than last year - Garden (great as he was in his day) was not in the same league as Poirier as a grinder. Thirdly we look like we can kill penalties and score some as well, which will be essential as with Nieckar, Evans and Norris we are going to be shorthanded or playing 4 on 4 regularly.

Biggest concerns are the netminding - Lorenz looks like he is made of rubber - he gives up some massive rebounds. Lets just hope Magliarditi can play, his ECHL numbers have him consistently .900 plus over a good number of years. Also pretty concerned if we continue to play Wallenberg with PC and Moria. They are all left shooters and we just seem lopsided. By the 3rd Period tonight they had switched Tait with Wallenberg which seems to make a lot of sense particularly since Patrick looks like he has his plays on the pp and pk.

Oh and by the way, as for Carson - my mother can do better.

Think we were disappointed because we were all thinking 'Hey its a BNL team. We'll get to see our lads give them a good drubbing then' and it didn't happen. Thing about friendlies is you try stuff out and a lot of it doesn't work. My footie team has played three friendlies so far and our keeper was playing outfield for a laugh at one point. So lets keep this in perspective.

I will say though that I still love Joel Poirier. Gritty player who never gives up (Can I draw a small comparison there with Darcy Loewen, andyd ? Oh go on please ?) and he was doing some really nice simple passing at times.

PC's Man Of The Match award ? Hmmmmmm, well he was trying and throwing his weight around in checks, but on the scoring front he resembles the player who started last season looking a bit isolated on the Leach/Hadden line. He did get two assists though and once his regular line is decided I'm sure he'll look dangerous again.

Worrying moment from Calle on the powerplay. He gets the puck near the blue line, there's an opening to shoot and he passes off into the corner. Err, NO. You're there to blast it from that position, that's why we hired you.

Clayton Norris is really quite tapped. He was doing some barmy stuff again. Forearms to the head seem to be a perfectly acceptable way of checking the opposition apparently. Think he could be quite good for entertainment value out there.

Wallenberg scored the opener and looked like he was up for it. We're not playing as a team though, which is understandable this early on.

The Nieckar/Weber/Tait line was dead as a doornail though. Baz did some good stuff fighting for the puck in the corners. Not fighting as in hitting, that is. Baz seems to be actually set on playing this year as oppose to belting everyone. The line was rather homemade, comprising of the players no one knew where else to put and Weber cannot be a regular line player this year. Much as we love him, its time for him to be finally given a breather on a PK Line or something.

Yes, the booing of Carpenter was possibly a bit over the top, but wasn't it funny when he got called for Illegal Equipment for playing on after he'd lost his helmet.

Carson spent the first and last periods victimising us and the middle one victimising the Blaze with somewhat erratic calling to put it mildly. His Slashing call on Drolet was bizarre. Drolet is the last man trying to stop a breakaway, he stands his attacker up brilliantly and shields him right and left toward the boards to give the rest of the D time to get back and apparently touching an opponent on the arm with your hand is slashing.

Things might have been more cheerful on here if Hadden's empty net shot from our back line hadn't hit their post. Then we'd have been 5-3 up with 2 minutes to go, they probably wouldn't have pulled their N/M again and we'd have come out of it looking better. As it was, it missed and they equalised with the N/M pulled with 30 seconds to go.

Comedy Moment Of The Match: Keefe running round to where Simms, Blaiser and Brebant were sat at the other end of the rink, getting Simms to sign his elephant, wrapping him in a Panthers banner, pretending to beat him up and generally pratting about with our block cheering him on. It should be said that the stuffed toy elephant was in fact kitted out in a stab-proof flak jacket before being taken anywhere near Simms. You can't be too careful.

One more lot of Coventry comments...
1. Small ice didn't suit us - not enough space and it all looked very crowded.
2. The ice seemed 'slow' - passes just seemed to fade out beofre they reached the receiver.
3. I thought we played well in patches and certainly the shot count was good (esp. from Moira)
4. Goal from Savoie was a classic 2 on 1 finish.
5. Evans finished his goal off very well.
6. The majority of the Coventry side (14 or 15) played together last season, and it showed.
7. Can we sign the lad MacNiven from Coventry? He looked good.
8. Carson gets worse. What about the penalty on Norris in the last period? Our goalie had gone off, we had possesion of the puck on the delayed penalty for a couple of minutes until the Coventry player touched it. Carson whistled and then gave the penalty against the Panthers - argghhh!
9. Hey, it was only a challenge game.
