Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands, with
over 150 beaches and a year round warm climate which rarely dips below 20 degrees centigrade. Due
to it's close proximity with the African continent (approximately 70 miles away) most of the
eastern coast of the island is covered in white sand, which makes the beaches there some of the
best looking in the Europe. The name Fuerteventura comes from the words Fuerte = "STRONG" and
viento = "WIND". The island constantly has an off shore-wind which attracts surfers from
all over the world, with various championships being held there throughout the year. Life on the
island is low-key at the moment, as Fuerteventura is the least developed of the Canary Islands
that is accessable by plane. Most of the nightlife is centred around Corralejo in the North,
which is being developed constantly, with it being the main tourist destination on the island.
Elsewhere it still remains in it's semi desertic appearance which appeals for people looking for
the quiet life or a holiday.
The best surfing spots on the island are all within 20 miles of Corralejo in the North around a
dirt road known as the 'North Track', which is situated towards the North of the town.
