Reporting the death of Mr Alderman Mallam.

The following extract gives a brief insight into the mans character. Its from the council preceedings after his death, to elect a new Alderman.Reported in the Oxford University Herald.

'It might be no great merit for a man to preserve an upright and correct course through a lengthened life, but the examples were not so numerous as to allow them to permit such a man to pass away without some expression of regret. He had never heard the least shadow of distrust expressed as to the integrity of Alderman Mallam in his public capacity, while the state of his family was of itself sufficient testimony to his worth as a husband and a father. He belonged, it was true, somewhat to the past, and some might think his views were somewhat timid as to the extent municipal reform ought to go but there was not one present who would not say that Alderman Mallam uniformly desired to act accordingly to what his impressions were, to do that which was right'.

Mean time they lived up to the hilt and my grandfather (George) died of shock at the age of 62 when he found they were almost bankrupt. My father (His son) then look over all the debts in his own name to save his father (whom he adored) and kept his mother financially in her old age. He (George) also sent Phosphor and William Andrew to Worcester College. That was why with 5 children himself he was so badly off.
