The Nativity Play
by all the Little Ones at the Sunny Day Playschool

One day, two weeks before Christmas, the little ones at the Sunny Day Playschool went into the big school to see the crib that the older children had set up ready for Christmas. A pupil, Todd, showed them all round the display and even let them touch the figures and animals in the crib. Everyone thought it was lovely. They had brought some shoeboxes full of little toys for the children in other parts of the world who couldn't afford Christmas presents, and they laid them down next to the crib. It was little Jenny who said  "Why don't we make a crib like that in our playgroup? We could do a Nativity play!"
"But we'll have to do it quickly - it's only a week before the Christmas holidays!" said Kirsten. Everybody thought it was a brilliant idea.

Only three days had passed, and the rehearsals were going very well. John kindly made a large stable, Ben, who was also responsible for videoing the play brought in a 'manger', and Kirsten andDanielle (the playgroup leaders), plus all the little ones and their mums enjoyed making costumes, wings, crowns, and headresses for the Kings, shepherds, angels and of course, Mary and Joseph. Mikayla kindly suggested using her doll, Doddy, as the Baby Jesus, and because nothing else more suitable was found, Doddy got the 'Star of the Show!'

Eventually, it was the big day. The School Hall had been decorated for Christmas. Everyone was so excited as the audience filed in. They yelped for joy when they saw their mums and dads entering the school hall. They all had their costumes on, waiting in the wings. Finally, the lights went down, a hush swept over the audience, and it was time for the Nativity Play to begin...

A long long time ago, when Baby Jesus was born, a stable was the only place free, because everywhere was so busy. He was laid on fresh straw in a manger (a feeding trough for the cattle) and wrapped in white sheets.

Soon a group of little angels, led by the Archangel Gabriel, came down from above and paid a fleeting visit to the couple and their new-born baby, Jesus. Not many people know this, but most angels are male, just like Archangel Gabriel. The angels left a star behind so that the shepherds and Kings would be able to find the place where Jesus had been born.

It was not long before some shepherds in a nearby field saw the star and curiously followed it - it led them to the stable, where they paid their respects to the Baby Jesus, but then had to hurry back to tend their sheep.

Then it was the Kings who followed the bright star, and soon arrived in the stable. They had all brought gifts for the Baby Jesus - gold, incense and myrrh, which they laid down before Him, then they journeyed home again on their camels. Of course, the Kings (or Wise Men) did not actually visit Jesus until the feast of the Epiphany - January 6th, but a little 'make-believe' is okay!

We hope you enjoyed our Nativity Play, and we thank you for watching it. Don't forget to sing 'Happy Birthday' to Jesus on Christmas Day, because remember, we are celebrating His birthday!
