DISPLAYING YOUR PAGE ON THE WWW

is easy too, and you can do it for free. You need to have access to the internet to send your pages ('upload them') to a 'server' - a computer providing web space for people to use, and an easy way to do this is to use 'FTP'. It stands for File Transfer Protocol, but don't be put off by the techie-sounding words.

Before you start, there are one or two things to check:
Are you satisfied with your pages? Is the spelling right? Do all the links work? It's much easier to change them before you 'upload' them, so if you need to, do it now.
Are they all saved as HTM or HTML files? They need to be. It's a good idea to call the first page 'index.html' and to keep all the other file names simple and lower-case (no capitals or spaces etc.)

Do you have some software for 'FTP' on the computer you're using? Your 'internet access provider' may have supplied some software eg mail etc, so have a look and see if you have something called 'FTP'. If not, don't worry, you can get it from the internet for free.
Click on the link below to go to a web page where you can download a program called 'WS_FTP', for either Windows 3.1 or Windows 95. Just choose the one you need for your computer and click the 'download' button. When you have downloaded it, you will need to follow any instructions for 'unzipping' the compressed file and installing it.
Go Get FTP!

Finally you'll need some web space on a server. If you have an internet access provider like 'Freeserve' or 'Demon', they usually offer free web space to customers. Check it out.

Or, click on any of the links below to check out 'online communities' who provide web space free of charge.
Geocities    Angelfire    CyberCities
Or, as you're reading a page 'hosted' by Fortune City, why not try them?   Fortune City
When you sign up for web space, make sure you make a note of the address of your space. This will be called the 'URL' which stands for 'Uniform Resource Locator'and will start with http://

Now you're ready to use the FTP software. The first time you use it you'll see a box of questions appear called 'session profile'. Here you will need to enter the 'Host Name' which is a long number identifying the computer whose space you will use. You should have got this information when you signed up. Click the 'Anonymous Login' box to make a tick appear and type 'anonymous' where it says 'User ID'.

Put your e-mail address where it asks for a password. Then click save if you want to save this 'profile' (list of answers) for when you use the software again. Click OK, and your computer will connect up to the computer you've said is the 'Host'. The FTP window opens, and in the left column you see the contents of 'your local directory' - the files on your own computer, while in the right column you see the contents of the directory on the computer you are connected to.

To change directories, click on the name and then click the ChgDir button. to select a file for transfer, click on its name. Choose the transfer mode by clicking in front of its name, following these guidelines:
HTML document - ASCII mode
Picture files (eg GIF, JPEG) - Binary Mode
Then click on the right arrow button between the columns to 'upload' the file.

And that's it!
Now you can open your web browser, type in the address of your site, and see your page on the Web.
