WRITING YOUR PAGE
is just like typing anything else. If you can type a letter or a story, you can type a web page. Start by typing the words for your heading on the page, any size, like this.
WELCOME TO ESMERELDA'S WEB PAGE!
Highlight the words, by clicking the mouse at the beginning and dragging it across the words before letting go.
You will see three white, rectangular boxes near the top of the screen on the left. They probably say 'Normal', 'Times New Roman' and a number, probably '10'. The second and third of these change the shape and size of your letters. (For now, don't worry about the first.) Click on the downward pointing arrows to the right of the little boxes and choose a size that you like, and the word 'Arial' from the box with 'font' names in. If you leave the words highlighted you will see them change with each choice.
How about colour?
Leave the words highlighted and find at the bottom of the screen a Capital A with a little bar of colour under it. (Don't confuse it with the '3-D' A that looks as though it's falling over!) Click the downward pointing arrow to the right of it and a little box of colours pops up for you to choose from. Select a colour. If you'd like the words to be darker/thicker, click the capital B (for 'bold') next to the font size at the top of the page.
Welcome to Esmerelda's Web Page!
Then you can type some of the things you want to tell people about, changing the size and colour of your words as you go.
Background Colour
You can change the page colour from white to something more snazzy by clicking on 'format', 'background', and choosing a colour. Make sure you choose a colour that your text colours show up against though.
When you get to the place where you want to put in a picture, save your work.
The important thing is NOT to save it as an HTML file until you've completely finished, because after that you won't be able to change it very easily. So for now, save it as a word document . So click 'file', 'save as', and choose a suitable name for the file that you will remember. (How about 'webpage'?)
Inserting Links
The most important thing about a web page is that it is linked to other pages. If it wasn't it wouldn't be a web page at all, because it wouldn't be in a web of pages, but floating all by itself in hyperspace! Sad!
When you're writing pages in Word 97, inserting links to other pages is very simple. All you do is highlight the word(s) that you want to show up as your link to the next page. Let's say it's 'NEXT PAGE'. Then you click on the 'insert' drop-down menu and you will find, right at the bottom of the list of choices, 'Hyper link'. Click on this and you will see a box asking for information. All you need to do is put in the file-name of your next page, for example 'page2.htm' and OK it. You will now see that the word you had highlighted has turned bright blue. When you roll your mouse over it, the mouse-cursor changes to a hand to show that it's a link, and the file-name shows up in the status bar at the bottom of your browser window.
If you want to make a link to someone else's page, you do exactly the same thing, but instead of typing in a file-name, you type in the full address of the web site you want to link to, starting with http:// etc.
Now find out how to get your page online by clicking on the 'Display It' link below.
