Richard Springford was born in Allington in
circa 1798. He married Letitia Amber of Horton in 1826 at Bishops
Cannings.
The couple had 14 children including 8 sons. Most of the children
left Wiltshire and went to work in the newly industrialised 'Royal
Docks' area of south West Ham, then known as Plaistow Marsh or
Tidal Basin, Essex, now in London E16. Letitia died in Allington
in 1874. Richard went to live with daughter Elizabeth in West Ham
and died in 1876 aged 78 he was buried in East London Cemetary.
His son Charles moved to west London and another son Richard went
to Ontario, Canada. Although Richard's baptismal entry can not be
found it is believed that he is a grandson of William Springbatt
alias Springford of Allington. Richard's wife Letitia was present
at the death of Hannah Springford, William's daughter in 1855 and
Hannah's cottage was a short distance from Richard and Letitia's.
The tithe map for Allington shows that Richard lived north of the Devizes to Pewsey road. There are still two cottages in the same positions. I believe that the cottage shown above is on the site and possibly the cottage in which Richard lived. There is a neighbouring plot, now called 'Shepherd's Cottage' which may have been his home. The site of Hannah's cottage is about 100 yards west of the two cottages and is now just the corner of a field.
The photograph was taken in 1972. The cottage has now been extended and modernised.
