which once was one by God's decree

of Thomas Twinning Springbatt

who died 27 Dec 1813

Aged 84 years

 

 

(Side opposite)

 

the grave is a box tomb encased in railings

in 1980 it was covered in ivy. In 1991 it

is exposed but the decorative pinnacles

of the corner railings have come off

and lie detached on top of the tomb.

AGED 84 YEARS

 

MARY SPRINGFORD

DIED FEB 16th 1890

 

 

The stone was rectangular with

a crescent rising above the top.

It was in place in 1973 with only

a damaged area of about 6"x4" where

the surface stone had fallen off

after blessed are the dead "who"?

and damaging the top of GFORD on

Wm's line. The stone was gone in

1978.

A tidy well kept grave to the left of the path

facing the door, the grave lies to the side of the

church the head pointing to the corner of the church.

Wilcot Church near Pewsey

 

A badly eroded grave stone leans against a fence

where the path turns left at the church building

to run up to its door.

The stone is fairly squat and is rectangular

with gentle slopes on its shoulders raising to a

point. In 1972 the name Nathaniel Springford could

be discerned but little more.

Large box tomb 4 feet from church wall to left

of door as faced. Badly eroded on one side.

1991 Jan 1st a gap had appeared on the end

furthest from the church door exposing the

red brick walls below the tomb, this damage

does not seem like natural decay and many graves

seem similarly affected.

A SHARPLY POINTED GRAVE STONE LIKE

AN UPTURNED SHIELD. ON THE RIGHT OF THE PATH

LEADING TO THE CHURCH, LICHEN COVERED THE

TOP EDGES BUT OTHERWISE NO REAL EROSION.

Near this church are depofited

the Remains of THOMAS FOWLE Efq".

of Durrington, in this county;

who died February 3rd 1783

aged 48 years

Also of HENRY FOWLE Efq".

of the fame place

who died May 16th 1803 aged 67 years

And of JANE,his wife,

Daughter of Mr. THOMAS SPRINGBELT of Wilsford,

who died December the 7th 1780

aged 49 years.

 

This monument was erected by their furviving children

as the fmall, and now alas! Only Tribute

of Gratitude, Duty, and Affection

to the memory of the beft and kindeft of parents.

 

Also of SARAH FOWLE Daughter of

HENRY FOWLE Esf". of Durrington

who died November the 28th 1850

Aged 86 years

 

Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord

 

 

Turn right on entering the church and the

stone scroll is high on the wall to the left of the

door as you look back.
