Springford & Springbett Family History
Site
The 'What's New & What's Intended' Page

Search Engine Listings:
October 2000:
The web site now appears on most of the major search engines.
The main exceptions being Webcrawler and MSN and Hot Bot. The
last two having dropped the site from their database. The biggest
benefit seems to be from being listed prominently by Yahoo. For
some unknown reason the site has plummeted from about postion 1
or 2 to about 25 on 'Google.com' it is hard to understand how
some of the pages which rank ahead of this site justify higher
positions as the references to 'Springford/Spingbett' are few.
Updates to the Site
27th May 2000
- Uploaded a larger database into the 'Family Trees'
Section which now includes the Wilsford Springbatts and
Springbetts and their descendants in South Australia. The
Beechingstoke Springbats are included as well as some All
Cannings families where the connections are fairly
certain.
- A photograph of Wilsford Church is now in the Locations
section as well as one of Springford Road Southampton and
Urchfont Church.
- Mrs Hursey authorised the display of a photocopy from the
Absolam Family Bible
- The Swindon and Wiltshire Records Office confirmed its
agreement for the use (for the present) of the will of
Isaac Springford and that it had no objections to will
transcripts being displayed.
11th June 2000
- The home page has been revised to show the Springford
alias Springbatt extract and some slight alteration to
layout
- A link to a map of the Vale of Pewsey has been added
- Most of the photographs have been replaced with
compressed jpeg photos which are much quicker to load
into browsers. I hope that faster loading graphics may
improve the reaction of search engines and lead to more
publicity.
- Thumbnail images of the photos have been put on most of
the photo index pages.
August 2000
- Photograph of the grave of Isaac & Emma Springford of
Melksham added to the Monumental Inscriptions Photos.
- Photograph of the home of John Granby Springford added to
Location Photographs.
Photograph of Cliffe Pypard added to the Search this site
page
- Hyper link added to Search this site page allowing
visitors to find out how to order UK birth, marriage and
death certificates.
- Photograph of Gordon Springford included in Portrait
Gallery and two more of Thomas Ronald Springford.
October 2000
- Lots of new links have been put on the Links page. In
particular I was pleased/sad to find the number of
Springfords and Springbetts remembered on the UK
Commonwealth War Graves Site. I've also tried to add more
links to sites with Wiltshire photographs and some east
London related sites.
- A link has been put on the Map of Vale of Pewsey page to
a UK Old Maps Site. This is a very useful site and can
give village layouts from maps of circa 1880. It is a
little cramped but by selecting the North, S W or E
options the map can be followed to neighbouring locations.
Especially useful is the map of Allington.
- Links have been put on the first home page to the Surname
Ring and Surname Web and several other genealogy pages.
Although it is unlikely that people genuinely interested
in the site will find it in this fashion the membership/links
do seem to give high ranking search engine positions.
Future Proposals for the Site
It is intended to expand the Locations section to included
photographs of many more churches in the Vale of Pewsey where
Springbatts were baptised, married and buried.
More wills will be copied and uploaded on to the wills page
Some birth, marriage and death certificate information, where
available, will be linked to the UK index pages.
In due course the 'Places of Interest' section will be
completed to include extracts from local folklore, historical
information concerning the village attempting to put it into its
context for the period.
I hope that as the site attracts visits, information will be
forthcoming to say more about branches of the family in Canada,
USA, Australia etc. John Springford of New Zealand has been kind
enough to consider writing a New Zealand Page to link to this
site. It is also hoped that photographs of nineteenth century
ancestors may be submitted for display on the site.
Feedback and suggestions are welcomed. It is hoped that
visitors will find the site does not cause offence in anyway and
will feel able to support the motivation behind it. My research
has long been registered with the Guild of One Name Studies and I
have undertaken to answer any queries about these surnames.
However out of respect for the personal nature of family
information and to comply with data protection requirements most
information will be restricted to pre-1900 events. All
information will be treated confidentially and nothing published
without the consent of the contributor.
