Male Azure Damselfly resting on a leaf There are several varieties of blue damselflies, some very similar, and I don't guarantee that I have correctly identified them here! This one could, in fact, be the equally widespread Common Blue.... The time and place spotted gives some clue to identification. For instance, the Southern and Northern Damselflies are both found in very small areas. The Azure is found over most of England and Wales, as well as a good part of N. Ireland. Most of the females are green, although there is a blue and (predominantly) black form.
Two pairs of Azure (or Common Blue!) Damselflies ovipositing. The two pairs show no animosity towards each other - although the males keep a tight hold of their respective partners!
Below: The Blue-tailed Damselfly is predominantly black, with a blue "tail", as the name suggests!
