The Black Sun: Eclipse '99

Such is the rarity of the total Eclipse that it is a good reason for all sorts of manic behaviour. It's also a superb natural - and therefore royalty free - business opportunity! 	While the eclipse is extraordinarily pretty it is also potentially very dangerous requiring extreme care with eye protection. The official French poster on the left was a warning of the dangers of eye damage and advice that special glasses carrying the CE mark MUST be used. The rather strange thing was that shortly after buying such glasses from the newsagent WHSmith the UK authorities warned that these type of glasses were not safe! Confusing, or what?! We checked the lenses and used the glasses without difficulty.

Wherever there are eclipse chasers there wll be a good chance you will find entrepreneurs encouraging the disposal of their money! Examples in and around Vouziers included Eclipse Menus in restaurants. Eclipse Tarts and not to mention the inevitable tee-shirts! And don't forget the increase in demand for Champagne to celebrate after the event!

	Total Eclipses are rare but here is a list of the locations and dates of those over the next few years: 2001 [June 21] Southern Africa 2002 [December 4] Southern Africa and Australia 2003 [November 23] Antarctica 2006 [March 29] South America, North Africa and parts of Eastern Europe..... 2090 UK!

Total Eclipse August 11 1999 the pictures - Henk Nouws' site which also includes Eclipse pictures from Vouziers. Not of the Sun but a fascinating sequence of pictures showing the effect of the Eclipse on the landscape and sky [and not to forget the cows :-) ]. Taken together the pictures on "Le Soleil Noir" and Henk's site show quite comprehensively the visual treat that anyone in and around Vouzier would have experienced.
