This agency aims to make sure the English Countryside is protected,
and can be used now and in the future. Up to date info on countryside
issues, with good links pages.
English Nature
Government advisor on nature conservation. Details about National Nature Reserves,
Special Sites of Scientific Interest (important nature sites) etc.
English Heritage
Looks after historical sites and buildings, such as castles.
Scottish National Heritage
Scottish equivalent to English nature, Countryside Agency and English Heritage (combined).
Countryside Council for Wales
As above. Very interesting website - dont just think 'cos wales is miles away it isnt worth
a vist!
Joint Nature Conaservation Committee
Advisors to gov. on nature cons.
Environment Agency
Government pollution watchdog - sets discharge rates for factories to air and water, and can
take offenders to court. Controls waste also, and responsible for flood defenses.
Forestry Commission
Looks after the nation's forests for timber production, recreation and wildlife.
Also government advisor on this subject. Site also describes places to visit.
Community Forests
An initiative to create and manage new forests in partnership with the community,
for the community.
Encams
Environmental Campaigns. Charity which runs the Keep Britain Tidy campaign, and works to improve local environments. Aims for litter free and sustainable environments.
National Trails
National trails are long distance footpaths, maintained and promoted by the Countryside Agency.
Yorkshire Dales National Park
One of the two local National Parks. Other National Parks can be accessed through this site.
Friends of the Earth
International environmental pressure group. This is an excellent site which gives info.
on a wide range of up to date issues, including the countryside.
Greenpeace
International environmental pressure group well known for its direct action.
British Trust for Conservation Volunteers
Practical conservation organisation that offers support to any voluntary conservation group -
insurance, advice etc. Website packed full of info.
World Wide Fund for nature global site
WWF campaigns to protect endangered species and the natural world
World Wide Fund for nature U.K. site
WWF Conservation Action Network
Communicate with politicians etc. about the latest campaigns to encourage them to take action
for wildlife.
National trust
National charity which owns and cares for historical buildings and important landscapes.
Extensive website with places to visit etc.
The Wildlife Trust's Partnership
Umbrella body for the network of local trusts who manage nature reserves. This area is covered
by The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, their nearest reserve being Stoneycliffe Wood, Netherton, Wakefield.
Common Ground
Aims to preserve and promote local identity, and links nature with culture using arts. Encourages
people to make positive investments in their own localities.
The Environment Council
Works to enhance and protect Britain's environment through awareness, dialogue and solutions.
Site contains very interesting online journals etc.
Naturenet
Info. on countryside management issues - the law, designated sites, rights of way etc.
Royal Society for the Protection of Birds
Owns several reserves (nearest - Fairburn ings, Castleford), educates people about birds and
campaigns for better protection of birds and their habitat.

Marine Conservation Society
Campaigns to protect ocean life.
Woodland Trust
"Dedicated to the protection of our native woodland heritage". Buys and manages woodland
throughout Britain. Nearest reserve to Clayton West / Scissett is Wither Wood in Denby Dale.
Ramblers' association
Network of local groups who walk paths in the countryside, making sure they are well maintained
and passable. They also campaign strongly for public access to the countryside.
National Federation of badger groups
Umbrella organisation for local badger groups who monitor and work to protect the local badger population.
Sustrans
Routes for people - currently constucting the national cycle network, which is also usefull for
safe walking and for people with disabilities.
Centre for Alternative Technology
Educational charity which has a large visitors centre, used for demonstrating many alternative,
sustainable technologies (Wales). Website contains a detailed vitual site tour, shopping etc.
Earth Centre
Another environmental education centre, designed as a theme park, based in Doncaster.
Enviroyouth
Environmental Youth Group for 15 - 25 year olds in Kirklees who enjoy doing practical conservation work.
