Torquay is located at the top of Torbay in the famous English Riviera.
It is about 25 miles South from Exeter and just over that East from Plymouth.
Back
to top.
Torquay is probably the most famous resort in Devon and is well known throughout
the country being in the English Riviera.
The Arts
The arts are well catered for in Torquay.
Babbacombe Theatre
This is the smaller theatre in Torquay and is just at the top of the cliff
in Babbacombe. It has a good variety of family shows and has "The Laughter
Party" on for the summer season this year. For more information on the
Theatre call 01803 328385.
The Princess Theatre
The Princess theatre is an excellent theatre with many well known acts
including shows from the West End of London. Recent productions include
Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream coat The
Pirates of Penzance, Jasper Carrot and Ken Dodd. Productions scheduled
for the summer include Freddie Starr and Joe Pasquale. There is a café
/ bar bistro at the Theatre. Prices vary for productions but are usually
between £8 and £20 depending on location and the production.
For more information on the theatre call the box office on 01803 212383.
The Riviera Centre
The Riviera centre houses a cinema showing all the latest films and also
has a bar and restaurant and many other attractions. It is located at the
back of Torre Abbey Gardens just behind the beach at Torre Abbey. For more
information call the centre on 01803 299992.
Beaches
Torquay has many beaches of excellent quality including Blue Flag beaches
and Seaside award winners. However most of the beaches are either shingle
(or shingle and sand mixed) or fairly coarse sand. Here is a round up of
the main beaches.
Ansteys Cove
This small beach is located between the main town and Babbacombe and is
mainly rocky / shingly. It has some refreshments available in the summer
and beach huts for hire as well as a beach shop and toilets. There is car
parking
about a quarter of a mile away and it is served by bus routes 32 and 85.
Babbacombe Beach, Babbacombe
This beach is similar in character to Oddicombe beach but slightly smaller.
It has road access and a small car park but it is in a very steep road.
It is slightly more rocky than Oddicombe beach but still quite a pleasant
beach. Oddicombe can also be accessed by a level path around the small
bay avoiding the need to climb up to the top. It is also popular for fishing
of the breakwater. It has refreshments available and dogs are allowed on
the beach. It can be accessed by road and also on bus routes 85 and 32.
Corbyn Head (Seaside Award)
This is a small sand and shingle beach with many rocks at the south end
of Torquay. It has a car park fairly close by and is close to the railway
station and there are frequent busses serving the beach (routes 2, 12 and
200). Dogs are not allowed on the beach and there are deck chairs for hire,
toilets, beach huts and warning flags in operation. This is a reasonable
beach but is not very sandy. There are plenty of rock pools to explore.
Meadfoot Beach (Blue Flag, Seaside Award)
This is an excellent long beach just round the corner from Torquay harbour,
to the North. It has a flat promenade with tree covered cliffs behind and
plenty of car parking. It is mainly pebbles but with a little sand and
some rocks. It has toilets and beach huts for hire. Due to the length of
the beach dogs are allowed at one end of the beach. It is also good for
exploring the coast path nearby. It has good road access and is also served
by a bus (number 155 / 156) or a short walk from Torquay harbour.
Oddicombe Beach, Babbacombe (Blue Flag, Seaside Award).
This is an excellent sheltered beach with good amenities located in the
Babbacombe area of Torquay. It is below a very high cliff and can be accessed
either on foot (a steep climb) or on the cliff railway (summer only). There
is no car parking on the beach but there is a car park near the top of
the cliff. It is a very sheltered beach with excellent quality water and
excellent views. It has refreshment facilities, toilets, telephone and
has beach huts for hire. No dogs are allowed on the beach. It is a mainly
coarse sand but is shingly in places. It is served by bus numbers 32 and
85.
Redgate Beach
Redgate beach is located just outside of Torquay and is similar in character
to Oddicombe beach. Unfortunately it has now been closed by Torbay council
due to cliff falls making the beach dangerous.
Torre Abbey Sands
This is probably the best sandy beach in Torquay. It is entirely sandy
but is very small at high tide. It is accessed across a white metal bridge
from the main car park behind and is close to Torre Abbey. It has excellent
main road access and is also served by bus routes 12,200 and X80. It can
get very crowded in high season though and dogs are allowed on the beach.
Entertainment
Torquay has an excellent range of pubs clubs and restaurants. The clubs
in Torquay are some of the best you will find in Devon with big name DJ's
making occasional visits. They do generally have a strict dress code in
Torbay. For pubs there are many spread all around the town. There are also
many restaurants. Most of them are round the harbour with a good mixture
from cheap fish and chips to top quality restaurants. There are also some
in the shopping area of the town mainly Camelot's (mediaeval restaurant),
Bella Pasta (pasta) and of course McDonalds so all tastes are catered for!
Family Fun
There is plenty of things to keep the whole family happy in Torquay whatever
the weather!
Babbacombe Model Village
This is a large and excellent model village situated in Babbacombe just
north of Torquay town centre. It has won many awards and has many working
models and famous places modelled. The park is open every day except Christmas
day from between 10:00am and dusk in the winter with longer hours in the
summer. For more information call 01803 315 315 or visit the web site (see
below). A free bus service operates from Torquay Strand (at the back of
the harbour) in the summer.
Kents Cavern
Kent's Cavern is a large and impressive showcave and is Britain's oldest
scheduled ancient monument and site of the earliest evidence of humans
in Britain. The caves are open to the public but by guided tour only through
the easy to walk tunnels with spectacular stalagmites and stalactites and
the famous Face in the Rock. The tour also includes and Sound and Light
Show, Candlelight discovery, Stone Age remains, the cave by fire light,
total darkness and a cave exhibition. Also for children a chance to meet
Caveog the caveman on selected days. There is a gift shop and café
on site (limited choice of food from November to March). The caves are
open all year from 10:00 am to 4:00pm in winter with longer opening hours
(9:45am to 5:30pm in July and August and also some evening tours). There
is a large free car park on site and also served by regular busses (Bus
route 32 - see How to Get There) or a short walk from the harbour. For
more information call 01803 294 059 for opening times and entrance prices
(24 hour recorded message) or 01803 215 136 for other information. Or visit
the web site.
The Channel Islands!
CHANNEL HOPPERS, THE FERRY OPERATOR HAVE NO GONE BANKRUPT AND SO NO
FERRIES WILL BE RUNNING. IT IS HOPED THAT ANOTHER OPERATOR WILL TAKE OVER
THE ROUTE FOR SUMMER 2000 BUT THERE ARE NO FERRIES AT PRESENT.
If you're staying in Torquay why not take a day trip to one of the beautiful
channel islands of Alderney, Jersey or Guernsey. Whilst on you're way you
can stock up on your duty free - as the Channel Islands are NOT part of
the EU duty free goods can still be bought but with no duty on the islands
there are many bargains to be had. There are some excellent beaches in
the islands - perhaps the best in the country and plenty of other attractions
making it a unique day out. There is a new ferry service this year, operated
by Channel Hoppers, running from Torquay. After delays starting the service
it has now started and will run in the peak summer season. The booking
office is in the harbour near the Aquarium so why not pop in and find out
more? At present a temporary timetable is running and the ferry leaves
at 7:00am (check in is 6:00am - 6:30am) and arrive back at either 11:55pm
or 1:55am depending on the day and runs to Jersey every day and Alderney
on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays only but this is a temporary timetable
and may well have changed. A day trip costs £29 to any of the islands
and the crossing to Jersey is just over 3 hours. For more information call
Channel Hoppers on 01534 639111 or visit the web site.
The Riviera Centre
The Riviera centre is great fun for all the family whatever the weather!
This large complex is at the back of Torre Abbey Gardens and houses many
attractions. The biggest part of it is the swimming pool which has waves,
flumes, inflatable and a sloping beach and the water is heated to 84 degrees.
There is also a cinema and the building has many shows on. There is also
a restaurant, bars, a coffee shop, a burger bar, a soft play area and a
health and fitness suite. The centre is open from 9:00am (7:30 on Tuesdays
and Thursdays). For more information call them on 01803 299992.
History
Torquay is a modern town but also has lots history including the caves
at Kent's Cavern (see Family Fun).
Bygones
Bygones is a unique museum with a fully re-created, life-size victorian
street. As well as this lovingly re-created street you will find a working
model railway, model world, railway exhibits, military collection, and
a recreated world war one trench. There is also a gift shop and tea rooms.
Bygones is a large attraction since it is housed in an old cinema. It is
located in St. Marychurch, near Oddicombe beach and has plenty of car parking
near by and is also served by bus routes 85 and 32. It is open every day
except Christmas Day from 10:00am to 4:00pm (5:00pm at weekends and school
holidays) in winter and 10:00am - 6:00pm or 10:00pm depending on the season.
For more information call 01803 326108.
Cockington Village and Country Park
Step back in time to this lovely village with many thatched cottages. A
pleasant walk from the sea front in Torquay brings you to this village
which has remained little changed for many years. You can explore all the
streets and the gardens and parkland. There are gift shops, restaurants,
pubs, a visitor centre and carriage rides. Horses are also still shod at
the forge. Cockington Court a former mansion house is now open to the public
and is a large craft centre. There are displays of Glass Blowing, Calligraphy,
Patchwork, Stained Glass and many other crafts all free of charge. This
is a lovely village and is free to visit. Its is about 3/4 of a mile from
the sea front in Torquay. There is plenty of car parking on site (pay and
display) and it is served by a buys (50p single) in the summer running
every 20 minutes from near the Princess Theatre. Alternatively travel back
in time and visit the village by horse and carriage from Torquay sea front
at Livermead. For more information telephone 01803 607230.
Torquay Museum
Torquay museum has treasures from Torbay, Devon and the world! There are
famous finds from Kents Caverns cave and many other galleries including
Agatha Christie memorabilia. There is a gift shop. The museum is in Babbacombe
Road and is open Monday to Friday all year round and also at weekends from
Easter to October. There is also car parking. For more information call
the museum on 01803 293975.
Torre Abbey
Torre abbey is an ancient abbey now open to the public. For 4 hundred years
it was an ancient monastery before being converted into a residential home.
Now you can see everything about the abbey from earliest times of the monastery
to when the last owners moved out of the house. It is now basically
a stately home but with many different and unusual aspects. There are antiques
hunts, an authentic victorian bedroom and some of the personal posessions
and works of Agatha Christie. The Gardens are also open to the public which
also contain some of the ruins of the original abbey. There is a tea room
in the old Kitchens. The abbey is open daily from Easter to November 1st
from 9:30am to 6:00pm (last admission 5:00pm). Admission costs £2.75
for adults, £2.25 for Pensioners and Students and £1.50 for
children. A family ticket is also available costing £6.50. Fore more
information telephone 01803 293593 or visit the web site.
Shopping
Being quite a large town Torquay has an excellent range of shops. You will
find many gift shops around the Harbour area for all your souvenirs. Fleet
Walk is the main shopping centre and has most of the well known shops such
as Boots, WHSmith, Argos and so on as well as many smaller specialist shops
along the top of Fleet Walk and also in the Pavilion. There is also a large
out of town shopping centre called the Willows. Torquay is probably the
third largest shopping centre in Devon (after Plymouth and Exeter).
Sport
Being a large town Torquay has an excellent range of sports available.
Bowls
There is a bowling green in Torre Abbey Gardens.
Cricket
There is a cricket pitch at the back of Torre Abbey gardens.
Golf
There is a good pitch and putt course in Torre Abbey gardens which is nine
hole. A round costs £2.40 at present but it can be quite crowded.
Football
Torquay has it's own footbal club, Torquay United which has regular games
throughout the football season, why not pop along and watch?
Swimming
The Riviera centre has a large leisure pool with waves, flumes, a beach
and many more attractions as well as water heated to 84 degrees. It is
open daily from 9:00am (7:30am on Tuesdays and Thursdays). It is located
at the back of Torre Abbey Gardens just off the sea front. For more information
call 01803 299992.
Tennis
There are Tennis courts in Torre Abbey gardens.
Walking
Torquay is a walkers paradise. Walking around the town is pleasant enough
however the South West Coast path passes through Torquay. Although to the
south towards Paignton has some nice views you will have to follow the
road most of the way. To the North however the path is excellent. You will
get some superb views of the Torbay coast including Thatchers Rock and
the view point in front which is a lovely place to sit and relax. You can
continue to Babbacombe and take the bus back (route 32 - see below). If
you want to go further you could walk to Maidencombe or Shaldon but the
coast path North of Babbacombe is quite strenuous so allow plenty of time.
Bus 85 will take you back to Torquay (see below). I'd recommend a coast
walk in Torquay as there are some excellent views.

By Car
Getting to Torquay by car from Plymouth is easy and will probably take
a little over and hour. Leave Plymouth via the A38 and then join the A385
when it is signed through Totnes and join the A3022 at the end of the A385.
Then follow the signs for car parking. There is plenty of car parking but
you will have to pay for most of it.
By Train
There are a few direct services from Plymouth to Torquay but you will usually
