Free games and puzzle programs

All these games and puzzle programs are completely free. I wrote them purely for fun so feel free to download and distribute them. The only restrictions are the obvious ones - you can't charge money for them or claim them as your own work.

All these games require Windows 95 or NT 4, or later versions of either (i.e. 98, XP, 2000, ME)

Duell is an old board game which is (I think) no longer produced. Imagine a version of Chess where each piece changes it's type after moving (Bishops become Rooks, Knights become Pawns, etc.) and you have a taste of what Duell is like.
The computer version lets you play against another person, across a network, or against the computer opponent, which has a fully customizable skill level.

Cubix is a simple but entertaining puzzle game. It involves moving and rotating pieces around in order to form the particular shape required for the puzzle. Each puzzle is unique, with it's own set of pieces and solution shape.
Cubix comes with dozens of different puzzles which range in difficulty from simple to near-impossible, and when you're finished with them you can create and modify your own.

Cubix 3D is a challenging and intriguing puzzle game with elegant 3-D graphics. It involves manoeuvring pieces around a 3-D space to form a certain shape. The shape required, as well as the number and shape of the pieces, is different for each puzzle. The controls allow you to view the pieces from any position, and to move and rotate them however you want within the 'space'.

The game comes with dozens of puzzles, of varying degrees of difficulty. When you're finished with them, you can create your own.

Cubix 3D is loosely based on the Piet Hein's Soma Cube, which is the 3-D equivalent of Tangrams. Many of the puzzles in Cubix 3D are Soma puzzles.

If you're interested in the Soma Cube, you might find this program useful. It allows you to interactively enter a Soma shape - any shape made up of 27 cubes - and will solve it for you. It can give you the complete solution, or give you a hint, or just tell you whether the shape can be solved or not. It's also handy for creating new Soma puzzles interactively.

The program can also load and save Soma shapes, using the format described at Thorlief Bundgaard's Soma web site

Pentacubes is a challenging strategy game for two players. It involves placing pieces on the board so as to block your opponent from being able to play. The application provides a computer opponent or you can play against another user.

Black Box is a old favourite of mine, which is usually played with pen & paper. One player selects the location of 4 'atoms' in an 8 x 8 grid. The other player has to deduce the location of the atoms by firing probes into the grid. Each probe is deflected, reflected or absorbed by the atoms, and thus gives a clue to their location. The idea is to locate all 4 atoms using the least number of probes.

In this computer version, the computer places the atoms and you have to find them. The program displays the grid and the result of each probe (see diagram).
